Introduction:
Setting up a Domino server is really easy. Click Next, Next, Next and you are done. However, if you don't
understand all the simple pieces and how to configure them, then you can really cause yourself long-term
trouble. This lab is designed to show you how to install the Domino server as the first server in your own
domain.

Description:
In this lab you will run the install, configure the server and start it up.

Procedure:
START

THE

IMAGE
Locate the base virtual machine used in the lab and start it in VMWare Workstation.

Step 1

Locate the image per the proctor instructions. Load the image into the VMWare
Workstation program and start the machine. Make any changes to networking as
per proctor instructions. The Vmware image networking should be set to host-only.

Step 2

Once the virtual machine is started we need to log-in. Send Control-Alt-Delete

via the VMWare workstation menu to get a log-in prompt. You can also right click on
the VMWare image tab and select Control-Alt-Delete.

Step 3

Choose the log-in prompt for Administrator. Enter the password passw0rd.

SERVER SETUP
In this section we cover the basics of setting up a new domain for a Domino server.
Step 11

You should see a window advising that you are going to setup a new Domino
server. Click Next to proceed.

Step 12

Take the default that this will be a first server and click Next.

Step 13

The install is smart enough to pull the hostname of the machine for the name of the domino
server name. This may not always be the case so make sure to pay attention to the value in
the future. You may also want to start the habit of adding a server title to help describe the
function of the server. When it becomes one of hundreds in a domain, it may prove helpful.
Click Next to proceed.

Step 14

This step involves selecting a name for the Organization the Domino server. Choose demos
as the org name and passw0rd as the certifier password. The certifier is one of the most
important parts of a Domino domain and should be protected at all costs.

Step 15

The next part is to create a domain name for the Domino Domain. In this case, we will choose
demos again. Click Next to continue.

Step 16

Finally, we need someone to take care of the domino server. We will create a new domino
administrator for this domain. For this lab, enter Domino as the first name and Admin as the
last name. For a password, choose apassw0rd. Changing the domino admin password to
something different is good practice even in a lab environment. Also, check the box to save the
id into a local directory. This will be handy for later. Click Next when done.

Step 17

On the next screen, choose Web and Ldap as the services to setup for this server. Click Next
when done.

Step 18

If the next screen looks like the screenshot below, then the Domino server has successfully
chosen the name for the server. If it does not, contact the class proctor.

Step 19

On the next screen for securing the Domino server, take the defaults and click Next.

Step 20

One the next screen, review the settings and then click Setup if they match the screenshot
below. The setup should just take a few minutes to complete. If not use the <Back button to
make corrections.

Step 21

Congratulations! Your server setup is complete. Click Finish to dismiss the setup program.

Step 22

At this point the installed server is a working server. Find the IBM Domino Server icon on the
desktop and double click to start the server.

Step 23

At this point you will be prompted on how you want to start the server. You have the choice as
a windows service or a regular application. The difference really has to do with how the server
runs if you log off the machine. When you run it as an application, and you log off windows,
then it goes down. Because we are just doing a series of labs, we want to run the server as a
service. We will then we need to use the IBM Domino Console program (also on the desktop)

to interact with the server. By running as an application, we get console access without extra
steps. But for now, we will run it as a service.

Step 24

Click on the IBM Domino Console shortcut. A new console window will appear showing
informational message from the server as it starts up.

Summary:
At this point, you have successfully setup a Domino server. It is running and has a default domain and some
basic services running. What we now need to do is setup an Notes Admin client for the domino administrator so
we can continue to get the server ready for the next labs.
And that is how easy it is to setup a Domino server.
