The National FFA organization awarded a $1,000 AGCO/North

Star Hardware & Implement scholarship to Devon Jester of the
Hardin Houston High School FFA. This scholarship is from North
Star Hardware & Implement and AGCO through a special project of
the National FFA Foundation. Devon plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Heidelberg College.
This scholarship is one of 2,148 awarded through the National
FFA organizations scholarship program this year. Currently, 176
sponsors contribute more than $2.7 million to support scholarships
for students.
For more than 30 years, scholarships have been made available
through funding secured by the National FFA Foundation. This generous funding comes from individuals, businesses, and corporate
sponsors to encourage excellence and enable students to pursue their
educational goals.
Scholarship recipients were selected from 7,171 applicants from
across the country. Selections were based on the applicants leadership, academic record, FFA, and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural or work experience in agricultural education, and future goals.
The National FFA organization provides leadership, personal
growth, and career success training through agricultural education
to 610,240 student members in grades 7-12 who belong to one of
7,665 local chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin
Islands.

The 2014-2015 Ohio Cattlemens Association (OCA) BEST (Beef

Exhibitor Show Total) Program wrapped up May 9 with its annual
awards banquet held at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.
The banquet is a time to celebrate the many achievements of our
BEST participants, both in and out of the show ring, says Stephanie
Sindel, BEST coordinator. Each participant is recognized for their
hard work by family, friends, and BEST supporters alike.
Several representatives from program sponsors, Bob Evans
Farms, Burroughs Frazier Farms, Farm Credit Mid-America, Franklin
Equipment LLC, M.H. Eby, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, and
Weaver Livestock, were on hand to help present awards totaling
more than $50,000 in belt buckles, furniture, show materials, and
other awards.
This years BEST program featured 15 sanctioned shows that
weaved its way across the state with 401 youth participants showing
562 head of market animals and heifers.
Seth Clark received the 12th Overall Crossbred Steer title. He is
the son of Chris Clark of Covington.

SLOW COOKER BEEF STEW

Very good & easy!
2 lbs. beef stew meat

1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 packet brown gravy mix
1 small can mushrooms (optional)

1 cup water
1 packet Lipton dry onion mix
Put meat in slow cooker. Mix all ingredients together and pour
over meat and cook on low for 8 hours.
Serve with mashed potatoes.

CHERRY ALMOND PRESERVES

8 cups pitted sour cherries
1-1/2 cups water
10 cups sugar
2 pouches (3 oz. each) liquid fruit pectin
1 tsp. almond extract
1) In a large kettle, bring the cherries and water to a boil
for 15 minutes.
2) Add sugar and bring to a full rolling boil, stirring
constantly. Boil for 4 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove
from heat. Sir in extract. Skim off foam.

WALNUT APPLE CAKE

2 eggs
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 tsps. vanilla
2 cups flour
2 tsps. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
4 cups chopped,
peeled, tart apples
1 cup chopped walnuts
In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, sugar, oil, and vanilla.

Mix well. Combine dry ingredients. Add to the egg
mixture and mix well (batter will be stiff). Stir in apples
and walnuts. Spread into a greased 13x9x2 baking pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until a
toothpick inserted near the center
comes out clean. Cool on a wire
rack.
BUTTER SAUCE:
3/4 cup sugar
3 Tbsps. flour
1 cup milk
2 Tbsps. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Walnut halves (optional)
For the sauce, combine sugar, flour, milk, and butter in
a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil and
stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla.
Cut cake into squares. Top with warm sauce. Garnish
with walnut halves, if desired.
YIELD: 12-15 Servings
