GURU (BAGHAVAN) PROPITIATING STHALAM.
THIRU ERUMPOOLAI
Alangudi, the abode of lord Guru Baghavan is renowned for its tri-glories
ie. Moorthy (The lord) Sthalam (Place of divinity) and Deertham (The holy
water), is situated in Thiruvarur district.

Importance of the Sthalam


This is the divine place where you could propitiate lord Guru (one of the
Navagrahas)

Sthalam and its Location


This sthalam is situated in Alangudi of Valangaiman taluk, Thiruvarur
District of erstwhile chola country where Cauvery the eternal river Kollidam the
river in, which the tender bananas see their face flow and Vennaru the river that
grows the divine Tamil language also flow.
It is situated 7 kms. North of Needamangalam railway station and 17
kms. South of Kumbakonam on the road leads to Mannargudi. 274 sthalams of
Chola country have been sung in Devaram and Alangudi is one among the 127
sthalams situated on the southern banks of Cauvery.

Other names of this Stalam


Kasi aranyam, Thiru Erumpoolai and Alangudi are the names by which
this sthalam is called. The divine poet Thirugnanasambandar has blessed this
sthalam as Ezilar Erumpoolai. (The beautiful Erumpoolai) the lord is fondly
called as Abadhsahayar as the lord saved the universe from the dreadful poison
(Alakala visham) emanated while the sea of milk (Parkadal) was beaten. Hence

poison related deaths would not occur in this village, the fact that is valid till
today.

Merit of the Sthalam


This holy place is located 3 kms. From Vettaru. The branch of Cauvery.
The name, Abadhsagayar came to the lord from the aforesaid incident and the
village was christened as Alangudi as the Devares were saved from the
Rakshahas. The Vinayagar has been named as Kalangamar Katha Vinayagar
(Vinayagar who saved from troubles). Thiruvidaimaruthur viz Matthiarjunam is
the abode lord Mahalinga Peruman, for whom this sthalam is the parivara
sthalam and is the fourth in the Pancha Aranya Sthalams (holy places of five
jungles). Sayaratchai (Pooja performed in the evenings) is very famous in this
sthalam.
Rishi Viswamitra, Ashtathikku Balagargal, Agasthiyar, Pulasthiyar,
Kagapujandar, Sugarbramma Magarishi and Adhi Shankara have worshipped
this sthalam.
Musukuntha Chakkravarthi, Suvasanan and Sundarar have also
worshipped

this

lord.

Abadhsagayeshwarar in his Thiruveezhimizhalai Thiru Thandagam, Thirugnana


Sambandar has also paid many encomiums on this goddess. The lord of this
sthalam is Suyambu. Hence the period of this temple could not be fixed at
accurately. The period of Gnanasambandar is 6th or 7th A.D. and therefore the
temple may be considered as existing before that period.

Deerthams
15 deerthams are around this temple among which the Amirtha
Pushkarani encircling the temple is very famous.

This temple was believed to be constructed by one Siva Baktha


Amuthokar the minister of Musukuntha Chakravarthi. The minister was
beheaded since he refused to give half of the punniya accured because of having
done this Siva Kainkarya. Hence the Chakkaravarthi had been attacked by
thoshas and he was relieved from all these thoshas by worshipping this god, it is
said.

Thiruvizhakkal ( Festivals)
Pancha Paruva Urchavam, Special Darshan on monthly Guru Varams,
Gurupeyarchi (Transgression of Guru Baghavan from one sign of Zodiac to
another sign) Guruvara Darshan on Masi Maham, 1008 Conch Abisheka
Festival, ten days Maha Festival during Chitra Pournami and the Guru
Baghavan car festival on the tenth day and Laksharchanai during Guru Peyarchi
are celebrated grandly.

Ways and Methods of Worshipping


Those who have obtained 14 generations blessings only could come to
this temple. First, as usual , the lord vinayaga (Klanagamar Katha Vinayagar) is
to be worshipped. Then Thuvaja Ganapathy - who is there in the flag-mast
(Thuvaja Ganapathy) lord; Abadhsagayeshwarar and Guru Dakshinamoorthy
have to be worshipped in this order. After that, Somaskandar, Murugan,
Mahalakshmi, Durga, Chandikeshwara, Navagrhas, Urchavar Gurumoorthy
whom are in the prakarams (precincts) have to be worshipped. Then lord Sani
(Saturn) and goddess Elavarguzhali Ammai have to be worshipped. Then
Sashtanka namaskaram (Prostrating) before the flag mast is to be done. Then to
propitiate Guru Bhagavan, 24 ghee lights (Nei vizhakku) have to be lit in the
place earmarked for it and three rounds have to be made around the Sanctum
Sanctorum (in the prakaras) and during each and every round, prostration has to
be done and the propitiation has thus to be completed.

Annadhana Kattalai (free midday meals for 100 devotes on a specific
day) is conducted, if Rs. 15,000.00 (Rupees fifteen thousand only) is deposited
in the name of the temple and the same is performed from out of the interest
accured on any specific day like wedding day , birth day etc.. This amount has
been exempted from income tax under sec. 80(G).
As the Guru Baghavan is transgressing from Virgo (Kanni) to Libra
(Thulam). Laksharchanai has to be performed from 5th September to 12th
September 2005, the first phase of the same and from 23rd September 2005 to
2nd October 2005, the second phase. To be performed to participate in the same
Rs. 100.00 needs to be paid and a Silver Dollar (Velli dollar) engraved with the

holy image of Guru Baghavan would be given to the devotes participating in it.
In addition to it , Rs. 100.00 would be paid on Guru Peyarchi day which falls on
19th September 2005 as special Archana fee and would get the said silver dollar
and special entry to worship Guru Baghavan. A bag containing the dollar,
vipoothi Kumkum, a photo of Guru Baghavan, and a Laddu would also be
given to the devotes paying Rs. 100.00 as special darshan fee.
