Eddy Current Inspection is a through coating technique for detection of surface cracks/defects much the same
as MPI, that has been used for documented inspection of lifting points or other welds. This method does not
require the weld to be blasted to bare metal for inspection, but depends on good paint to metal bond.
Note: Eddy Current method may not be available in all locations.
6. Union Identification and Colour Coding
All equipment will have Alpha-Numeric bands indicating pressure rating, colour bands to indicate hammer
union type/fig, and service rating. All wing nuts will be painted to indicate union type/fig.
Note:

Equipment that does not have the appropriate colour coding for service, union type/fig, alphanumeric pressure rating shall NOT be placed in service.

The colour bands are to be 1 or 2 wide (1 wide for elbows, crossovers etc. 2 wide for straight pup joints 3ft
or greater in length, pressure vessels etc) placed immediately behind the union. The 2 or 1 colour bands for
service, union type/fig may be applied by painting or use of all weather tape.
The alpha-numeric pressure rating may be applied by stenciling or use of all weather tape. All alpha-numeric
pressure rating is to be applied in a contrasting colour to the background colour. For equipment painted PWS
Maroon, this is to be WHITE lettering.
For pipework the lettering is to be a minimum of 0.75 inch high for small items (crossovers, elbows), and 1.5
inch high for larger items (pipe, vessels, etc) and placed in minimum of 3 positions around the circumference
of the pipe.
Part numbers for the various colour and pressure identification have been set up.

Identification of union figure of hammer unions that can be mismatched and assembled, must be done by
multiple methods. A single method alone cannot be trusted as previous experience has shown that threads
can be cut as one figure, but unit stamped as another.
The first way of identification is to find the stamped/embossed size, figure and pressure rating information
on each component of the union (wing nut, male sub, female sub). See examples below.

Size, Figure and pressure rating

stamped into male (wing) sub.

If any of the components do not have this information visible, then the component is to be removed from
service and destroyed.
The second way of identification to be used to verify the information found above is to:
a.

Use thread gauges to identify thread type and pitch.

b.

Use Go/No Go gauges to identify ID/OD sizes of the wing nut, male sub,
female sub (i.e. 2 602 OD is smaller than 2 1502 OD).

c.

Physically measure the unions and verify these measurements against

manufactures dimensions.

Only once confirmation from both methods has been completed are hammer unions to be colour coded.
Any hammer union that has the potential to be screwed together and mismatched are also to be marked with
warning labels. These labels are to be applied to the union end of the unit that has the potential to be
mismatched.
Prior to make up of these unions to another union, the connections must be verified, each and every time.
Unions that we may use that can be mismatched are as follows:
2 602 Thread with 2 1502 Wing Nut
2 1002 Thread with 2 1502 Wing Nut
2 602 Standard Male Sub with 2 1502 Wing Nut
2 602 Detachable Male Sub with 2 1502 Wing Nut and Segments
2 602 Thread with 2 1002 Wing Nut
2 1002 Thread with 2 602 Wing Nut
2 402 Thread with 2 1502 Wing Nut

Warning label applied to a 2 Fig 602 thread union.

Identification and colour coding of unions is a continuous process and is to be conducted each time
maintenance is carried out on a unit. The Global Maintenance Checklists have been updated to include this
requirement.

Below are examples of acceptable and unacceptable ways/locations of applying the colour codes and
pressure ratings. Equipment that has multiple pressure ratings (i.e. Tanks inlet/bypass manifold 1440WP,
vessel 250psi or 10k x 5k choke manifolds etc), must have each different pressure rated area identified and
marked.
The MAWP rating of an assembly will be no greater than the MAWP of the lowest pressure rating component
used to make up the assembly. (i.e. a 3 sch 80 2,000psi pipe with 3 1502 10k unions will be rated to no more
than 2,000psi WP).
Acceptable / Not Acceptable Coding
Acceptable

Not Acceptable

Unions colour coded in correct place, H2S service

colour band in place, pressure rating stenciled
along the length of the crossover in 3 places
around circumference, allowing personnel to see
pressure rating no matter the orientation of the
crossover.

Incorrect wing nut colour (light blue) for male sub

colour (yellow). Potential mismatch of unions
resulting in catastrophic failure.
Applies to pipe, tees and elbows also.

Incorrect direction of pressure rating. Pressure

rating cannot be seen when pipe in certain
orientations.

7. Stenciling
All Power Well Testing equipment will have the QA Trace Number and Safe Working Load, Tare Weight
(Payload), Gross Weight stenciled on visible area.
The stencil will be in as large as possible lettering and in contrasting colour (i.e. white lettering on PWS
Maroon background) so that it is highly visible.
On skids or frames the QA Trace Number is to be stenciled on four sides, on the upright box beams. The
Gross Weight is to be stenciled on one side.
On skids with enclosed tops (separator, heat exchanger, etc) the QA Trace Number and Gross Weight are to
be stenciled on the top roof in lettering size that allows these numbers to be easily seen from a distance of
50ft.
QA Trace Number stenciled on roof

QA Trace Number stenciled on uprights of each

side

Gross Weight stenciled on at least one side

Equipment that does not have frames or skids will have the QA Trace Number and Gross Weight visible by
either stencil and/or stamped plate attached to the unit.
