1. Getting familiarized with Power World

This is a platform to simulate power systems in an easy manner. Its graphical user
interface makes it easy to use.
There are two modes of operation of the simulator: The Edit Mode and the Run Mode. In
the first one it is possible to create a new system, modify it or edit it. In the second,
simulations can be performed as if it were a true system.
If in doubt, consult the help menu.

2. Creating a new case

Let use simulate the following two bus system with parameters R = 0.05, X = 0.20, B =
0.80, P1 = -0.6, and Q1= -0.4. The base power is 100 MVA and the base voltage is 735
kV.

Step 1. Inserting a bus.

From the left tool bar click on the button
or from the Insert menu select Bus. Click
anywhere in the drawing. The following dialog box should appear.

Many of these options will be used later on. For now just type Bus 1 in the field for Bus
Name and input 735 in the Nominal Voltage field. Also check the System Slack Bus
option. Then click in the OK button.

Step 2. Attaching a generator.

From the left tool bar click on the button
or from the Insert menu select Generator.
Then click on the bus that we have just inserted. The following dialog box appears
automatically.

Select Left in the Orientation option. Then click OK.

Step 3. Insert another bus.

Follow the same procedure as step 1. Name the bus Bus 2 and do not check the System
Slack Bus Option.

Step 4. Add a load.

From the left tool bar click on the button
or from the Insert menu select Load. Then
click on Bus 2. The following dialog appears.

Change the orientation to Right. And input 60 MW and 40 Mvar in the Constant Power
column. Click the OK button.

Step 5. Insert a transmission line.

or from the Insert menu select
From the left tool bar click on the button
Transmission Line. Then click on Bus 1 and then double click on Bus 2. The following
dialog appears.

The line parameters are given in pu. Capture 0.05 in the Resistance field, .20 in the
Reactance field, and 0.8 in the Charging field. Input 200 in the Limit A field.

Your schematic should look similar to the next figure.

Now we will add some useful information of the system.

Right Click on Bus 1, a new menu appears. Select Add New Fields around Bus. The
following dialog appears.

Click on the label Pos5 of the upper figure. The following dialog appears.

Select Bus Voltage and click OK.

Then click on the label Pos1 of the upper figure. Select Bus Angle from the dialog box
and click OK. Then click OK to close the original dialog box.
You can drag and drop the new inserted fields to a place of your choice.
Repeat this for Bus 2.
The schematic should look like the following.

Now we are ready to simulate. From the upper toolbar

Select the Run Mode button.

If the Run Mode toolbar did not appear, then right click in the toolbar and select it from
the menu that appears.

Click the Play button.

Go back to the Edit Mode.

Right-click the label 60 MW. The following dialog appears.

Input 10 in the Delta per Mouse Click field. Click OK.

Repeat for the 40 MVR label.
New arrow buttons should have appeared. To make the buttons and font size larger, click
on the label and then from the Format menu select Font. Then choose a larger font size.

The schematic should look as follows,

Go to Run Mode and select Play. You can then click on the arrow buttons to modify the
load.
