Course Objectives:

To study the history and classification of different types of composite materials

To study the basic concepts and micro mechanical behavior of different reinforced
composites

To understand the different concepts of bending, buckling and vibration in laminated


plates

Introduction : Historical background, Potential features of composites, Mechanics of
composites, Resins: polyester, Epoxy, Phenolics, Melamine and urea formaldehydes,
Polyimide and silicone, High temperature matrices, Metal matrices, Reinforcement:
glass fibers, Boron fibers, Silicon carbide, Carbon and graphite fibers, Kevlar, Sisil
and other vegetable fibers, Application of composite materials, Classification of
composites, Definition
Unit II
Mechanical Behavior of Composite Materials : Basic Terminology of Laminated
Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials, Manufacture of Laminated Fiber Reinforced
