INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

Millions in India, thousands abroad mark

International Yoga Day
IWK Bureau

t was an unprecedented
demonstration of Indias soft
power as tens of thousands
across the world, besides millions
in India, performed yoga on
Sunday June 21 to mark the
inaugural International Day of
Yoga (IDY). A record-breaking
nearly 36,000 people, led by
Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
took part in the main early
morning event at Rajpath in the
heart of New Delhi in India.
Yoga was performed at events
across the world -- from New York
to Trinidad and Tobago, from the
Maldives to Australia, from Tel
Aviv to Moscow, from on board
Indian naval ships to the heights
of Siachen glacier, at schools
and in innumerable residential
localities -- to mark the IDY.
The mega event at Rajpath,
the ceremonial boulevard and
the surrounding green expanse
that
connects
Rashtrapati

Bhavan, the presidential palace

on Raisina Hill, with the World
War I memorial India Gate, was
replicated across state capitals,
cities, towns and rural areas in
the country. Modi described the
event as the start of a new era
for training the human mind for
mind-body balance, peace and
harmony.
Modi, who himself performed
the asanas among the crowd of
yoga practitioners at Rajpath,
said yoga was not only an exercise
to make the body flexible but a
path for inner development.
It marks a new era of training
of human mind for peace and
harmony, said Modi, who was
attired in a full-sleeve loose white
shirt and white lowers, with a
scarf in the saffron, white and
green colours of the Indian flag
looped around his neck.
Events were held in the
morning hours in 192 countries,
organised by the Indian missions
and yoga centres.

As the sun rose on the globe,

the yoga events began kicking off,
with the eastern-most countries
sending in their pictures.
India notched two world
records on the inaugural IDY at
Rajpath -- for the most number
of participants in a yoga lesson
with 35,985 at Rajpath -- and for

the most number of nationalities

attending a yoga lesson -- with
people from 84 countries
participating at Rajpath.
Among those doing yoga at
Rajpath were US Ambassador
Richard
Verma,
Nepal
Ambassador
Deep
Kumar
Upadhyay, Afghanistans Shaida

Mohammad Abdali and members

of the foreign diplomatic corps
and foreign nationals studying in
India.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal, Lt. Governor Najeeb
Jung and Delhis former top
cop Kiran Bedi were among the

prominent personalities who

joined in doing yoga.
Remarking at the sea of people,
Modi said: Did anybody ever
think that Rajpath can become
Yogpath?
Modi did all the 35 asanas
listed in the Common Yoga
Protocol performed on Sunday. A
group of yoga experts performed
the yoga exercises on a stage,
beamed to the crowd on around
25 large screens, with instructions
in Hindi and English.
He said that while yoga may
have originated in India, it draws
energy from the millions who
practise it around the world.
Modi is a keen yoga enthusiast
on whose proposal the UN last
year announced holding of IDY
on June 21.
IDY celebrations in United
Nations sought to symbolize the
unity of humanity as people from
around the world gathered on
June 21st in unique observance of
an Indian proposal sponsored by
177 nations and endorsed by all
193 UN members.
People of all races and
religions,
nationalities
and
political persuasions joined to
perform the 35 asanas drawn
from a millennia-old science of
the body and mind on the shores
of New Yorks East River.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

was clad in a plain white yogathemed track suit. Diplomats,

rising in unison to do the asanas,
called out by the yoga guru Ravi
Shankar of the Art of Living
movement.
Indian Army soldiers did
yoga at the Siachen glacier, the
worlds highest battlefield at
5,400 metres altitude, and in
Ladakh and Kargil, besides at
all major stations. The Indian
Navy, observing Yoga across the
Oceans, performed yoga with the
crew.
The Art of Living said some
50 million people across 132
countries did yoga on Sunday
with the spiritual group.
47 Islamic nations join
International Yoga Day
There are 47 Islamic nations
among the 177 countries of
the United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA) that officially
co-sponsored with India a
resolution to establish June 21 as
International Day of Yoga.
This is the highest number
of co-sponsors ever for any UN
General Assembly resolution,
according to the Ministry of
External Affairs (MEA). The
resolution was passed unopposed
without a vote.
Afghanistan,
Bangladesh,
Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE,
Qatar and Oman were among the
Islamic nations that co-sponsored
the UN resolution.

n another event in Auckland,

Meditation New Zealand (NZ
School of Meditation) hosted
a celebration for International
Yoga day on Saturday 20 June at
the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall.
The day was a beautiful balance of
Yoga Asanas taken by prominent
yoga teachers in Auckland
(including Nikki Ralston, Kara
Leah Grant and Rire Norman)
and Yoga Sound Meditation led
by teachers from Meditation New
Zealand.
The hall was full of enthusiastic
practitioners that ranged from
beginners to experts. Everyone
was eager to give the variety
of asanas their best effort. The
crowd of around 300 often spilled
out into the foyer and almost

everyone stayed for the four hour

duration. There was a delicious
assortment of healthy and vegan
food to nourish everyones energy
levels as well as a variety of stalls
promoting the essence of health
and yoga.
Radha
Lyttle,
from

Meditation New Zealand, said

that Meditation New Zealand
offered the event to the public for
free in order to encourage and
celebrate peace and harmony in
the world. Everyone is looking
forward to an even bigger event
for the next Yoga day.

To Yoga or not to Yoga?

t is ironic how a practice that

is considered to lead you
on a path to happiness and
inner peace has stirred up unrest
in India. Yoga, a 5,000-year-old
practice, achieved a global status
on Sunday, June 21. An initiative
by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, who proposed the idea of an
International Yoga Day to the U.N.
General Assembly (UNGA), the
event was successfully observed
around the world as millions
across the globe rolled out their
yoga matsan extraordinary
demonstration of Indias soft
power.
Modi, who has been practising
yoga for years, joined around
35,000 people in New Delhi for
a 35-minute session. Hundreds
gathered underneath Eiffel Tower
in France to unfurl their bright
yellow mats. Yoga enthusiasts
performed
the
exercise
at
Chulalongkorn University field in
Bangkok and the Indian Embassy
in Kabul also saw Afghans and
foreigners perform yoga to mark
the first International Yoga Day.
The UN adopted International
Day of Yoga with 177 countries
sponsoring
the
proposition.
Recognised as a day to promote
harmony and to foster good mental

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

Orange

and physical health, controversy

brew inside the borders of
the country that initiated the
event. Minority groups in India
questioned the political motives
behind the initiative. A fierce
debate was born around the U.N.
and the Indian governments
support of yoga. Kamal Farooqui,
a member of the Muslim
Personal Law Board, accused the
government of pushing a Hindu
agenda by promoting yoga. The
postures and Sanskrit chants
in yoga are considered as a
practice that goes against Islamic
teaching. Speaking up against
this remark, a Bhartiya Janta
Party (BJP) MP further ignited
the fire by commenting that the
ones opposing this discipline
should leave Hindustan. This
spite between political and
religious leaders of different
faiths has created unnecessary
controversies.
However, this is not the first
time a group has raised objections
on the religious aspect associated
with yoga. The concept has
come under fire many times
when people have questioned
the connection of this ancient
spiritual practice with Hinduism.
In 2014, a church hall in the UK
banned a yoga class. Many pastors
in the US have termed yoga as

demonic. In April this year, a

California appeals court ruled that
yoga taught in San Diego County
schools did not violate religious
beliefs after parents of two
students claimed that the practice
promoted Hinduism. This cultural
anxiety has been shared among
many across the world.
It cannot be denied that the
roots of yoga lie in Hindu tradition.
But for a practice that enables
physical, mental and spiritual
wellbeing, it might be petty to
pass it off as a Hindu agenda.
Stirring up a religious dispute
beats the purpose of practising
yoga. It would be a pity to see
that a routine aimed for a holistic
experience entangled with politics

and religion. It goes against the

whole philosophy of yoga.
Treat yoga as any other form
of physical and mental exercise.

Treat it as a sport. People need

to stop finding out political and
religious motives behind every
initiative. Defenders of yoga
say that it is universal and has
no religious agenda. Sadhguru
Jaggi Vasudev, the creator of the
Isha Foundation, says, yoga
predates all religions. He calls it
the science of inner wellbeing.
The yoga guru further dismissed
the idea that yoga requires you
to bow down to Hindu deities
or the sun: Your wellbeing is
entirely yours. Only at the time
of instruction you have to be with
somebody. Once you know what
to do, you dont need to go to
anybody or bow down to anyone.
Yoga has come a long way
from its Eastern roots. It gained
popularity in the West and now,
practitioners of yoga consider it to
be a way of life. It unites the body,
mind and spirit. It is aimed at not
only being physically fit but also to
being mentally aware and well on
your path to self-realisation.
Maybe it is time to keep all
religious beliefs aside and adopt
a practice that would help in the
spiritual growth of the society.
With many of us living sedentary
lifestyles, yoga will prove to be
beneficial in more than one way,
as it has the potential to transform
your inner and outer selves.

Sikh complains of
discrimination

Sikh
barred
from
entering a club in
Auckland for wearing
a turban filed a religious
discrimination complaint last
week.
Gurpreet Singh, who was
barred
from
entering
the
Manurewa Cosmopolitan Club
with his colleagues, lodged a
complaint with the Human Rights
Commission in New Zealand, as
reported by Stuff.co.nz.
When he was told that he was
breaching the clubs no-headwear
policy, Singh tried to explain to
the staff that the turban was part
of his religious belief and not
something he could take off.
The clubs President, John
Stevens said the rule was not
about religious discrimination
and was aimed to stop people
coming in with beanies, caps,
hoodies and other headwears.
Although the importance of the
rule was discussed in a company
meeting five years ago, members
voted unanimously in favour of
retaining the rule.
This is not the first time when
the clubs no-headwear policy
came into conflict with religious
groups.
In 2009, another turban-

Gurpreet Singh

wearing Sikh man, Karnail Singh,

was barred from entering for the
same reason.
The same year, a Muslim
expat student was stopped from
dining at the club because she
was wearing a hijab (religious
headscarf).
Prime Minister John Key
termed the barring as very
disappointing.
Id like to think culturally
were a very considerate society.
People wear turbans because
of their religious beliefs... and I
think we should try and be more
inclusive of them, said Mr Key.

curtain raiser event of
Twisted Families motion picture
in Auckland last Sunday.
Twisted Families, a romantic
comedy film is directed by Devesh

Rachel Singh and is the 3rd feature
film by Dreamz Productions.
Dreamz
Productions
had
started
their
feature
film
production with the cross cultural
drama Urban Turban released in
2014 and a psychological thriller
Ek Ka Do Aur Dhoka Ek- the Dark

be released. Their 3rd production
Twisted Families is set to hit the
theatres soon this year.
Hosted
at
the
Mikano
Restaurant & Bar in Judges
Bay, Auckland, the event started
with a mix and mingles with the
guests at the lounge followed by
the introduction of the director,
producer and the actors. The
guests sipped their cocktails and
flocked the photo booth corner to
take selfies and group pictures.
It was a great experience
working with these young talents,
the story is inspired from real life
events and that is why it is very
special and close to my heart,
said Devesh Singh, the director of

(From left to right): Jazz Singh, Devesh Singh, Jagdish Punja, Meena, Rishi Deepak,
Dr Rachel Singh, Karan Singh, Amit Sharma and Lucy Russel

the film.
Twisted Families is a love story
of a Punjabi boy and a Fijian
Indian girl; trouble ensues when
the two families meet to fix their
marriage and the differences in
their lifestyles create mayhem.
The film promises generous dozes
of fun and laughter and it has
universal appeal across all nations
and audiences because of its genre
and content.
It was fun working with the
cast; we used to have a lot of fun
everyday on the set. I play the role
of Tina who is love with Aman
(Amit Sharma). I also learnt a lot
from Deveshji, he is a wonderful
director and the way he narrates
the script just gets you into the
zone, added Lucy Russel, the
female lead of the film.
The film has entirely been shot
in New Zealand and it has been

made in a span of 1 year; from

script to post production.
It was a wonderful experience;
it is my third work with Dreamz
Productions. I play the role of
Aman, a young Punjabi boy who
falls in love with Tina (Lucy
Russel). Working with the cast
was really fun and it felt like
one big family, mentions Amit
Kumar, the male lead of Twisted
Families.
I like the way Deveshji directs
the film, he puts his heart and
soul into the project. The actors
have done a fantastic job, and the
film is going to win the hearts of
the audience, added actor and
Executive Producer Rishi Deepak.
After the introduction of the
cast and crew the trailer was
launched on a big white screen
and was applauded by all present
there.

Amanah KiwiSaver Plan

the first Shariah compliant
KiwiSaver
schemewas
launched by Amanah Ethical on
January 31, 2015 in Auckland.
We recognised that there
is a huge market for an Islamic
Financial Institution that looks
after the financial needs of the
Muslim community based in
New Zealand, such as Shariah
compliant
banking
system,
buying houses, KiwiSaver and
other investment opportunities,
says Barrister Brian Henry,
Managing Director of Amanah
Ethical.
Amanah Ethical currently
has two investment products
available to members of the
publicAmanah New Zealand
Unit
Trustand
Amanah
KiwiSaver Plan, which provides
incentives to save forretirement.
To set up a financial institution
that can run properly fulfilling
the needs of the community,
there had to be a sound cash flow
prepared and proper business
structure made so that it does not
become vulnerable to the feeble
market conditions.
The trust only invests in the
stock of up to 50 corporations

listed on NYSE, NYSE MKT

or main board NASDAQ in US
dollars. All the investments made
comply with Shariah Law as
defined by AAOIFI (Accounting
and Auditing organisation for
Financial Institutions).
Amanah strictly does not
invest in avenues that are contrary
to the Shariah Law i.e. interest
producing products, derivatives,
corporations involved in alcohol
businesses,
pork
business,
gambling, night club activities,
and pornography, corporations
involved in producing tools of
war, tobacco products and stem
cell research or products. If the
Trust suspects the investment is
non compliant, it immediately
sells
the
investment
and
investigates the issue.
A lot of research was carried
out to frame a model that
complies with the rules in the
books of Islam.
We
spent
12
months
convincing
FIANZs
Ulema
Committee
that
Amanah
KiwiSaver is a strict interpretation
of Shariah Law because they
are the scholars who make the
rulings and know better as in
what is allowed in Islam. The
Ulema Committee approved us
as strictly Shariah compliant on

November 20, 2014, added Mr

Brian Henry.
Sheikh Mohammad Amir,
the Head of Ulema Committee;
Dr Ahmed Rufai , the Head of
Shariah to the International
Islamic Financial Market (IIFM)
in Bahrain and Dr Faruk Balli,
Associate Professor at Massey
University School of Economics
and Finance, shortly came
onboard as members of the
Amanah New Zealand Islamic
Advisory Board.
Families or individuals who
are searching for investment
opportunities that are Shariah
compliant can now invest into
Amanah KiwiSaver that will,
after a certain period of time,
accumulate and further be
invested in Halal trades.
There are many Muslim
families and individuals who
are looking for such avenues
for investments, which are
permissible by Islamic Laws.
Indian Weekender, in its May
1st, 2015 issue, covered a story
of a lady who was looking for
home loans from banks without
interest since usury is forbidden
in Islam.

Minister wishes Muslim

community on Ramadan

amadan began last week

and Ethnic Communities
Minister Peseta Sam
Lotu-Iiga wished all Muslims
in New Zealand the best for the
holy month.
Ramadan is the ninth month
of the Islamic calendar and is
regarded as the time in which the
Quran was revealed to the Prophet
Muhammad. To mark this event,
Muslims around the world fast for
a month.
It is a time for reflection,

spiritual devotion and renewal.

Muslim families come together
to celebrate their faith and their
communities. By fasting, praying,
and through acts of charity, they
give thanks for the health and
happiness of family and friends.
In New Zealand, Ramadan is
an opportunity for us to recognise
the important contribution our
Muslim communities make to our
nation, Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
According to the 2013 census
there are more than 46,000 people

in New Zealand who identify as

Muslim, double the number in
2001.While many are recent
migrants, Muslims have been
a part of New Zealands economic,
cultural and social fabric since
the 1800s.
As New Zealand Muslims
celebrate Ramadan, some may
be thinking of relatives elsewhere
in the world. My thoughts and
prayers are with them and their
families at this important time,
Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

proposed
amendments to the Land Transfer
Act and the Tax Administration
Act was introduced into Parliament
yesterday by Ms Upston. The bill
contains two of the property tax
proposals announced as part of
Budget 2015:
}} Buyers and sellers of property
will be required to provide their
IRD numbers at the time of
property transfer. Those who are
tax residents in another country
will also have to provide their Tax
Identification Number from their
home jurisdiction. There will be
an exemption for New Zealand
residents main home.
}} And to ensure our anti-money
laundering rules apply, well
require overseas people to have a
New Zealand bank account to get
a New Zealand IRD number. This
will also apply to New Zealanders

Employers want urgent

action on health and safety

oves by National to
water down health and
safety reforms have been
slammed by employers the very
group the Government claims is
pushing for change, says Labours
spokesperson for Labour Relations
Iain Lees-Galloway.
The
Employers
and
Manufacturers Association has
written a letter to me expressing its
mounting frustration at the way the
Government has handled the Health
and Safety Reform Bill.
Not only does the EMA take
the Government to task for its MPs
failing to reach agreement on how
far the changes should go, it also
gives it a serve for using employers
concerns as an excuse to rethink
the Bill.
The letter, signed by Advocacy
and Industry Relations manager

Mark Champion, calls for the

Government to take the lead in
improving health and safety at
work and commit to beefed-up
enforcement with more inspectors.
It says the shell be right attitude
to workplace safety isnt working and
that while employers are prepared
to do their bit, the strongest and
most prominent leadership even
if its unpopular among a small
proportion of voters must come
from Government.
Unions have all voiced their
concerns about the direction the
bill is going in. Now employers are
speaking up about the Governments
woeful management of the reform
process too. No one has any
idea what further changes the
Government intends to make to the
bill and thats leaving everyone very
nervous about what happens next.

for three or more years.
These measures provide extra
information which will help Inland
Revenue detect people seeking to
avoid their tax obligations. When
people try to get out of paying tax,
its unfair to all those people who do
pay, Mr McClay says.
While its not illegal to trade
property to make a gain, property
traders are subject to the tax rules
like everyone else. The proposals in
this bill will see Land Information
New Zealand and Inland Revenue
collaborating to ensure fairer
taxation of people buying and selling
residential property for profit, Ms
Upston says.

After its first reading this week,

the bill will then be referred to
Select Committee for consideration
and public consultation. The bill is
expected to be reported back to the
House in time to be passed in late
September and it will take effect
from 1 October.
Mr McClay says as announced
in Budget 2015, further legislative
changes are in the pipeline.
Most people in New Zealand
do the right thing and pay their tax.
Inland Revenue will help you get it
right, but for those who try to avoid
paying, were making it harder to get
away with it, Mr McClay says.

In future they will stay in the
workforce longer, give more of their
time to the community, and become
a powerful consumer base. Seniors
are a positive force for change and
should be seen as such.
In National Volunteer Week,
the report notes the major impact
seniors have as volunteers.
By 2051, seniors will be
contributing $35 billion in unpaid
and voluntary work, up from around
$8.5 billion in 2011.
Too often we hear our ageing
population described as a burden.

That attitude is objectionable

and completely wrong, as this
report shows.
Many
of
the
volunteer
organisations which help families
and enrich communities across the
country rely on seniors dedication
and commitment.
Seniors will spend around $65
billion a year in 2051, up from $14
billion in 2011, and pay total tax of
$17 billion, up from $3.6 billion.

has been welcomed by Associate
Transport Minister Craig Foss.
Record numbers of Chinese
tourists are travelling to New

them do so safely, Mr Foss says.
The Driving Safely in New

The leaflet, part of an ongoing
body of work focussing on the
safety of visiting drivers, will be

spread the road safety message to

this key tourism market, Mr Foss
says.
Whether borrowing, buying or
renting a vehicle in New Zealand,
the leaflet contains important
information on road safety and
local conditions.
Of course, every country
wants its citizens to be safe when
travelling abroad. I recently
met representatives from the
United States, United Kingdom,
Australian, German and Chinese
embassies to discuss how best to
educate and inform visitors from
their countries. I was pleased to
see many already have measures

New report shows economic power of seniors

new report has highlighted

the economic influence
of older people in New
Zealand, Senior Citizens Minister
Maggie Barry says.
The 2015 Business of Ageing
report update has projected older
New Zealanders will make an even
bigger contribution to the economy
than previously thought.
Seniors put billions of dollars
into our economy each year, and
their importance will only grow as
our population ages, Ms Barry says.
By 2035, there will be 1.2 million
people aged over 65 almost double

complement the 2014 Report on

the Positive Ageing Strategy and

highlight the economic potential of

New Zealands ageing population.

Helping the regions achieve their potential

Kanwaljit Bakshi
National List MP

or New Zealand to build a more

productive and competitive economy
we need all our regions achieving
their potential.
Thats why were working across the
country doing things like building the Roads
of National Significance and accelerating
regional roading projects, putting in ultrafast and rural broadband, and encouraging
irrigation projects.
National cycle trails around the country
are helping boost our tourism industry.

Were also working alongside business

to invest in primary growth partnership
projects to get a better return from what we
sell to the world.
Budget 2015 has a number of initiatives to
support the regions.
Were investing $25 million over three
years for new Regional Research Institutes
to support innovation in the regions.
And theres an $80 million boost
over four years to R&D growth grants to
support innovative Kiwi businesses around
New Zealand carrying out research and
development.
The Budget also allocates $97 million
for improvements to five regional highways
in Northland, the East Coast, Taranaki, the
West Coast, and Queenstown.
This is part of a $212 million package
for 14 regionally-important state highway
projects. There is $244 million to build

seven new schools, expand four existing

schools, and add another 241 classrooms
across the country. The new schools are in
Whakatane, Gisborne, Hastings, Rolleston,
and Hamilton, with significant school
expansions in Papamoa and Queenstown.
Investment to boost world-class internet
connectivity includes a $100 million to
bring fast, reliable broadband to more
regions and a $50 million fund to extend
mobile coverage in black spot areas such as
along main highways and in popular tourist
destinations.
ACC is on track to provide further levy
cuts of $500 million, bringing total annual
savings since 2012 for businesses, workers,
vehicle owners, and families to $2 billion.
The average ACC motor vehicle levy will
fall from around $330 to $195 from next
month with a further drop to $120 from
2016.

First-home buyers havent been able to keep

up with rapidly rising house prices up by
$100,000 (19 percent) in Auckland just in
the last year alone.
Sadly too little has been done to address
the problem and houses in Auckland are now
less affordable than in cities like Toronto,
Los Angeles and New York.
The reason that prices have gone up so
dramatically is because the supply of houses
hasnt kept up with rapidly rising demand in
Auckland.
Over the next 10 years, Aucklands
population will grow by over 250,000. We
need to be building an extra 13,000 houses a
year. Thats not impossible.
Back in the early 2000s, under Labour we
were building over 12,000 houses a year in
Auckland.
But by 2010-12, that number had fallen
to around 3500. Even now, new houses
numbers have recovered to only 8000 a year.
That means that weve built up a shortfall of
nearly 30,000 houses. The government has

not responded effectively to this problem.

First, they denied the crisis. Then they
sought to blame everybody but themselves.
Realising that this wasnt working, the
Government is now frantically trying
to demonstrate that its finally doing
something. However, that has turned into a
total fiasco.
Sadly for him, Housing Minister Nick
Smiths attempted photo-opportunities
have backfired.
He claimed that the Government was
freeing up 500 hectares of public land
for building. But as it turned out, some
of the properties he showed to the media
on a PR bus tour didnt even belong to
the Government or had been promised to
iwi. Other land turned out to be electricity
substations and cemeteries.
When questioned about whether Mr
Smiths policies were working and whether
he had confidence in him, Mr Key said that
Mr Smith was doing his best. Then it got
worse.

There is support for housing in the

regions with Housing Accords with local
councils in Tauranga, Western Bay of Plenty,
Queenstown Lakes, Tasman, and Nelson.
And 90,000 people are set to benefit
from the new KiwiSaver HomeStart scheme
the most generous support package in a
generation to help first-home buyers.
Budget 2015 continues our programme of
helping families with a $790 million package
to support children living in some of New
Zealands poorest families.
This includes children living in beneficiary
and low-income households in the regions.
And from 1 July all children under 13
will have access to free GP visits and free
prescriptions.
These and other initiatives are a
continuation of our strong programme to
build a brighter future across regional New
Zealand.

The Housing fiasco too little, too late

Phil Goff
Labour MP

hamubeel Eaqub is a migrant to New

Zealand. He loves this country and
wants to stay here but that resolve
is tested by Government failure to deal with
growing problems in housing and transport
in Auckland.
He points out in his book, Generation
Rent, that for many migrants and other New
Zealanders, the dream of home ownership
has been stolen from them.
Of Aucklanders over the age of 15, 57
percent now live in rented rather than owned
accommodation. Mostly thats not a matter
of choice but because of unaffordability.

He said that the land promised by Mr

Smith was conceptual.
People cant live in conceptual houses.
We need the Government to bring in
policies, as governments have done in the
past, which promote growth in housing to
meet demand.
We need to restore the Kiwi dream of
being able to own your own house.
The Government needs to work with the
private sector to ensure that land, building
materials and skilled labour are available to
lift our building output.
It needs to build confidence in the
industry to gear up to build more homes by
standing behind a programme to help firsthome buyers to move into their own homes.
Labour governments have done this time
& again in the past. We will back National if
it does the right thing.
Sadly, all weve seen so far is the Smith
fiasco & a lack of any genuine effort to solve
the housing crisis.

Budget shows National is delivering for Mt

Roskill families
Dr Parmjeet Parmar
National List MP

t the end of May National

unveiled its seventh Budget which
cemented our commitment to
helping families as we take the next steps
in our economic programme. As a result
of our strong economic management we
are delivering more jobs and stronger
economic growth throughout the country.
This year we are placing a big focus on
helping the children who are living in our

poorest households. Our $790 million

package at the heart of this years Budget
is to help these children. The package
includes a $25 a week increase in benefits
to families with children, the first noninflationary increase since 1972. Were
also increasing Working For Families
payments to low-income families of $12.50
a week in most cases. National knows
that helping our most vulnerable families
will reduce long-term deprivation and
lift families out of poverty. The hardship
package builds on our welfare reforms
to help people into work. We are already
seeing promising results 42,000 fewer
children are living in benefit-dependent
households than three years ago.
I know that the families of Mount

Roskill, like all families, are focused on

ensuring their family are healthy, that they
have good schools to go to, and can see a
doctor when they are sick. On top of our
child hardship package our health budget
has grown to a record $15.9 billion this
year. From July 1 we will be extending free
GP visits to children aged 13 and under,
which will make a huge difference to
families who shouldnt see cost as a barrier
to getting their child to the doctor.
National is supporting health and
education to the tune of $2.4 billion over the
next four years. This investment supports
our children so that they can reach their
potential and become the future leaders of
New Zealand. I am always encouraged by
the achievements of the children here in

Mount Roskill, and I recently congratulated

a group of students who received awards as
part of Youth Week 2015.
When Im meeting people in the
electorate Im encouraged by the positive
responses I get to this Budget. People
understand the Government is working
hard to grow our economy, provide support
for small businesses and reduce costs for
families. Im hearing that things such as
the ACC levy reductions are making a real
difference in our community.
Its clear that Nationals responsible
economic management has meant we can
deliver the type of Budget which supports
our economy, our families and our business
people. Were following a solid plan and its
working.

New policy for

Report hits the mark
unconsented additions on housing
ucklanders buying new homes

with unconsented decks or other

additions should not assume that
they wont have to remove it, according to Ian
McCormick, general manager of Auckland
Councils Building Control Department.
From 1 July we are introducing a new
policy that will be consistent across the region
and not a mix of
legacy council rules,
he says.
The rules around
unconsented works
have always been important, says Mr McCormick.
What
doesnt
change is the fact
that anything unconsented will need
to have a Certificate Ne w s fro m
of Acceptance (CoA)
to meet the current
NZ Building Code, not the code at the time of
construction.
This is a very important consideration
for home buyers, and for real estate agents. A
shell be right attitude doesnt stop a major
structural failure, such as the deck we saw
collapse in Te Atatu last year.
To ensure the building meets the current
building code, there is a requirement for all
CoA applicants to attend a pre-application
meeting with Building Control, providing as
much information as possible.
The meeting will help decide the councils
response, including if there will be an
infringement fee.
The Certificate of Acceptance will indicate
which parts of the structure have been
assessed, and how those elements comply with
the NZ Building Code.

ayor Len Brown has welcomed

the release of the Productivity
Commissions Using Land for
Housing draft report.
Released last week, the report looks
at the supply of land for housing with a
particular focus on New Zealands fastest
growing
regions,
including Auckland.
It also explores
the
processes
local councils use
to provide land
including planning,
zoning and provision
of
infrastructure
such as roads, parks
th e C o u n c i l and water pipes.
The Mayor says,
The draft highlights the role of an urban
development agency, for example, and
the need for local government to explore
other ways to fund infrastructure. Thats
exactly what council is doing in setting up
Development Auckland and by proposing
motorway charges.
I am also heartened to see the report
has identified the need for agencies to work
together to address Aucklands housing
supply and I welcome these conversations.
The Mayor says the report talks about
the need to look seriously at intensification
of housing, which Auckland is already
working towards.
The report has highlighted some key
issues and we will definitely be making a
submission to the final report.

Rural communities
have say on poor
broadband coverage

uckland Councils registration of

interest to central government in
support of improved broadband
coverage will be reinforced by nearly 300
pieces of feedback from rural communities
across the region.
The government recently announced
additional nationwide funding to extend UltraFast Broadband (UFB) as well as $100 million
to extend the Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI)
and $50 million to tackle mobile black spots.
Linda Cooper, Councillor for Waitakere
and member of councils Rural Broadband
Political Working Party, says that the feedback
overwhelmingly reflects community concerns
over poor broadband quality in rural areas,
which is generally slow and unreliable.
Feedback came from communities in
Franklin, Rodney, Waiheke, Great Barrier,
and Waitakere Ranges local board areas. More
than 50 per cent of responses came from the
Rodney area, the largest and most populated
of the rural local boards.
Rural communities were asked to give
feedback on:
}} the extent of broadband connection
problems
}} how these problems affected everyday life
}} the demand for broadband services in the
local community.
The information will support councils
registration of interest to the Ministry of
Building, Innovation and Employment
(MBIE).MBIE will use the information
provided by Auckland Council and other local
authorities to decide how to allocate the funds
nationally.

Young girls preyed on via Facebook

here has been a noted increase in older men luring

young girls through Facebook for sex in exchange for money.
This has been brought to the
attention of Fiji Womens Crisis
Centre.
Centre
co-ordinator
Shamima Ali said with the increase
in access to social media, more young
girls were exposed to this behaviour.
We have received reports of
young secondary school students
and University students who have
been lured by old men, married men
who then promise them with better
lives by buying them expensive
perfumes, taking them out to
expensive resorts, dinner dates and

other enjoyable lifestyle which most

young girls aspire to have, Ms Ali
said.
In most cases, these men work
together as a group, they know
each other which means they pass
contacts of these innocent girls to
each other and this is how they
work, she said. Ms Ali said that once

they receive such reports, they refer

it to the police.
The main challenge here is that
it is hard to establish the evidence
as most of these young girls do not
want to come out to speak due to the
fear of being victimized.
We try our best to work with
parents and these young girls by
providing counselling as this is also
a form of prostitution and at the
same time warn young girls the
consequence of their actions.
However, if a girl older than 16
years is consenting to sex, police
cannot do much.
Police Commissioner Bernardus
Groenewald confirmed receiving

he
President
of
the
Methodist Church in Fiji,
Reverend Tevita Banivanua,
has reacted strongly after hearing
reports of school children playing the
demonic game Charlie Charlie.
I am not really familiar with how
this game is played, but as a Christian
nation, we know the truth and that is
if you invite God, he will come and
if you invite the Devil, he will also
come, Reverend Banivanua said.
What
children
should
understand, and I hope that parents
will help them understand, is that
playing with the devil is like playing
with fire; it will not only affect you,
but it will also affect the people
around you, he said.
Rev Banivanua said the devils
mission was to destroy peoples
lives and he targets young people
the most. This demonic game has
gone viral around the world on
social media and it is even played

An outspoken critic of the military

regime, in 2009, Prof. Lal was
hounded out from Fiji for speaking

as well as his wife, environmental

We do not work on the report
that we receive but we can only act
on the report if there is a complaint
by the victim herself.
Under Section 214 of the Crimes
Decree it reads that if a girl is above
16 years old and is consenting to
sexual intercourse then it is not a
crime so that means we cannot act on
that. But what we normally do is that
if its a forceful and if a complaint is
lodged by the girl, then we act.
Mr Groenewald said according to
the Crimes Decree if the ages if the
victim is less than 13 then it is rape
and if it is between 13 to 16 and is not
consented, then its defilement.

Proud week for

by school children as young as eight

years old in Fiji. Most of the school
heads confirmed that kids in both
primary and secondary school
were playing this game. A principal
of a prominent Christian school
in Suva, who preferred to remain
unnamed, said she had sent five
children home because she claimed
they were possessed during school
hours in the school after playing this
demonic game.
The students see the same things
when they are prayed over and that
is a little boy calling them to play
with them or even faces of dead
people appearing to them and this
happens during school hours, the

principal said.
One of the students who got
possessed wanted to jump from the
top balcony; it seems that this devil
Charlie that they are inviting wants
to kill them, she said.
A boy, who attends a prominent
Christian school and prefers to
remain anonymous, claims he was
possessed after playing the Charlie
game and he had felt very scared.
The Charlie Charlie Challenge,
as it is being called, entails placing

History and Language. He is also

Founding Director of the Centre
for the Contemporary Pacific, and
Chair, Pacific Manuscript Bureau.
Looking back at his career, Prof.
Lal described his humble beginnings
and the path that has taken him to
the pinnacle in his particular area of
research.
I come from a rural background,
with both parents illiterate, Prof.
Lal recalled. In my life in a remote,
pre-modern part of Fiji, I learnt early
on that there was no future on the
farm, and that I would have to work
hard to create my own prospects.
He did exactly that. He took
himself to university, at first in Fiji
and then in Canada and Australia,
studying history. The story of his own
family was particularly fascinating as
a young man.
My grandfather arrived in Fiji
in 1908, as an indentured labourer
from Uttar Pradesh in India. I have

vivid memories of him in the 60s. I

wanted to learn more about his life
and of others like him. Everybody
around me was too busy making
a living to care, but to me, finding
about who these people were and
how they came to be in Fiji, was
akin to finding my own true self.
The motivating factor then was to
bear witness to my time and place.
I figured, if we dont write about
our past, no one else will.
This went on to become the
driving force in his lifes work to
give illiterate people a voice, an
agency, a humanity. Lately, Prof.
Lals work has extended to people
of the Indian diaspora, some 20plus million in number.
Ive travelled to all countries
where indentured labour was
taken, in a search of who we
are. The history I write is what I
have heard and learnt from the
journeys of our people.

significant service to education,
through the preservation and
teaching of Pacific history, as a

A highly regarded Australian

bout 350 international

guests were impressed
with our progress as a
nation. Prime Minister Voreqe
Bainimarama said this yesterday
when he commissioned the Raiwai
Multi-Purpose Courts.
I can tell you that I have just had
one of my proudest weeks ever as
we hosted around 350 international
guests in Suva from all over the
world for the Joint Parliamentary
Assembly of the European Union
and the 79 member countries of the
ACP the African, Caribbean and
Pacific States, he said.
They included nearly 40
members
of
the
European
Parliament plus the representatives
of more than a billion ordinary men
and women scattered across the
globe. And all of them left deeply
impressed by their Fijian experience
and especially the achievements of
our new democracy the One Nation
we have forged and the way in which
Fiji is now powering ahead.
I was immensely gratified when
Louis Michel the former European
Commissioner for Development
and co-President of the EU-ACP
Assembly publicly stated that he
had been wrong and the EU had
been wrong to doubt me and to
doubt Fiji over our promise to build
a genuine democracy, with equality
and opportunity for all.
It took a big man to say something
that some of our nearer neighbours
still cant bring themselves to say. He
said it was a question of intellectual
honesty that led him to acknowledge
he was wrong.
And I just wish there was a bit
more intellectual honesty from
others. Because the evidence is
there for everyone to see that Fiji
is an infinitely better place because
of my Governments reforms.

NEWS in BRIEF
Students win NZ trip

en lucky students from around

the country are gearing up for an
exciting cultural exchange trip
to New Zealand organised by Goodman

The Crest Cultural Exchange Program,
which Fiji Times Ltd is proudly a part of,
involves students who have been chosen
by a panel of judges according to the
selection criteria.
The children will get to travel and
experience New Zealand in a tour
that includes visits to schools, culture
and heritage visits and homestay
arrangements with selected families.
The 10 children will embark on the
one-week jaunt in August. The tour of
NZ includes visits to geothermal areas of
the country along with stays at a Marae

Affordable uni fees

iji National Universitys acting

vice-chancellor Professor Ian
Rouse has reassured students
intending to join the university that
it is still the most affordable tertiary
institution in the country and the region.
Responding to concerns raised by
students in the North who say that tertiary
institutions have become money-making
bodies, Prof Rouse said this was not true.
He said FNU had never raised its
school fees nor had it continued to raise
its fees over the past few years.
The Government here in Fiji has
made significant opportunities for
Fijian students. Students may have the
perception that it is expensive to join
tertiary institutions but schemes such as
the Toppers scheme and student loans
like students in Australia do give students
a wide range of choices.

Even though the conference is

I am told that the focus of this
conference, similar to the previous
one, is not specifically religious in
nature.
I am reliably informed that
the conferences are for charitable
purposes, and are largely meant to
create awareness and to encourage
the participation of a wide crosssection of society in important
and often life-enhancing and life-

President of Fiji Vishva Hindu
Parishad Jay Dayal said with this
years theme set as Sustaining
Fijians through Health Benefits of
Yoga, Medication and Ayurveda,
participants will be exploring how
old methods benefited mankind to
acquire healthy and long life.
The conference aims to create
a synergy in promoting some of the
core Vedic knowledge for the benefit
of all Fijians as a way of using yoga,
meditation instead of medication to
keep a free and healthy lijfestyle, Mr
Dayal said.

Anything but funny

Psychologists have found that the struggle against an obstacle inevitably

propels the fighter to a new level of functioning. The extent of the struggle
determines the extent of the growth. The obstacle is an advantage, not an
adversity. They call it adversarial growth or post-traumatic growth. So That which
doesnt kill me makes me stronger is not a clich but fact.
When adversity hits or something super challenging happens to us, we can either
break down or grow.
The same event can elicit post-traumatic stress or post-traumatic growth. Two
different people, two different responses, two different results. So what sets these
two people apart? Of course its their attitude.
So the question then is, what kind of a person you want to be. Would you rather
be bogged down by challenges and give up or rather grab the bull by its horns and
push as hard as you can. Do challenges build you up or break you down?
I wanted to start with this thought because I often see young people give up too
easy.
This week we introduce a new column Chai Latte with Maya. This will bring
you personal rendezvous with people who are social A-listers and youve always
wanted to know more about them. We hope you enjoy this.
India was all over the world map on the 21st of June with the International Yoga
Day celebrations. We bring you an elaborate story on this, with lots of pictures from
the world around. It has also been amusing to watch how politicized something like
yoga can be. In the end however the outcome was spectacular Its not everyday
that two new Guinness World Records are set. The thing that really stood out for me
was the coming together of the intention of thousands of people around the world
toward the same goal. So, really, the International Yoga Day was not just beneficial
personally to all those who participated but also as the coming together of many.
How powerful!
New Zealand is also experiencing some really cold spells and apparently breaking
its own record of being the coldest day with temperatures going as low as -20
degrees. I do hope that everyone is looking after themselves because such weather
brings with it a fair bit of illnesses as well.
In other interesting news on us Indians from around the world, the 13th
Republican Candidate Bobby Jindal who is the governor of Louisiana has just
announced that he is going to run for the President of the United States of America.
As the reaction to this is still building up it is in fact a matter of great pride to see
how well the Indians around the world are doing.
Amidst all this, the Auckland Councilors have been warned that failing to pass
the long term plan would create huge financial risks for the city. Also the funding of
the transport projects and rate hikes means that some residents will see rate hikes of
almost ten percent. This is concerning and it is going to be key to keep an eye on how
things unfold. We will not doubt keep you posted on what is happening.
I sign off here hope you do enjoy yet another issue of your favourite publication.
Until next time.

Tip from the trenches

Happy Parenting

Take charge: Show your love by

setting boundaries so your kids can
explore and discover their passions
safely.
Dont clip your childs wings: When
your toddler is developmentally capable
of putting her toys away, clearing her
plate from the table, and dressing
herself, let her. Giving a child responsibility is good for her selfesteem.
Dont try to fix everything: Give young kids a chance to find their
own solutions to teach them self-reliance and resilience.
Remember that discipline is not punishment.
Pick your battles: Ignore small stuff. Focus on the things that really
matter - that means no hitting, rude talk, or lying etc.

Is it fine not to fine?

Paula Ray

ast week, one of my students pointed

out a news report published in
www.maifm.co.nz, which links to
an interview aired by TVNZ with CountiesManukau district commander John Tims.
The famed Paul Henryquestioning him on
the incident of an unlicensed Maori driver
behind the wheels, who was slapped a fine
of $400 in south Auckland, but was given a
chance to avoid the payment.
The move can be linked back to the
strategy to reduce Maori offending, linked
to a nationwide programme called Turning
of the Tide. It is designed to reduce
Maori offending.
Henry was interviewing Tims in the
wake of an alleged leak of documents on
driving guidelines, whereby Maori drivers
caught without a licence or in breach of
their conditions dont get a ticket and are
instead referred to training.
But police said that the guideline, reeking
heavily of partisanship towards a certain
ethnic community, has nothing to do with
that particular ethnicity. It is interesting to
note here that the Maori people have been
listed as the target for the Turning of the
Tide policy.

Police Commissioner Peter Marshall

says, as quoted in the NZ Police website,
there is an obvious need to reduce the
number of Maori entering and re-entering
the criminal justice system and dying on
the roads.
Maori now comprise more than 40% of
all police apprehensions, more than 50% of
the prison population and more than 20%
of crash fatalities, despite making up only
15% of the general population, quotes the
NZ Police website. In addition, Most Maori
who are victims or who are directly involved
in crime are under 25 years of age.
As such, Iwi and Police are joining
together to implement an innovative
strategy aimed at reducing victimisation,
offending, road fatalities and injuries
among Maori. Senior Iwi representatives
along with the help from Police, have
drawn up a Whanau Ora Crime and Crash

Prevention Strategy.
Fair enough. If you have valid reasons
to implement a strategy aimed at a
particular ethnic community because
official statistics reflect the need, why not
keep it transparent? Perhaps one of the
reasons behind this approach is because
certain representatives from within the said
community might question the veracity of
the statistics. But that can be countered too,
with logical reasoning (if there is one!).
But contrary to expectations, CountiesManukau district commander Tims

explained to Henry, The point is about

keeping people safe and making sure we
give people opportunities to get their
license without getting them into the
justice system.
I would much rather have someone get
their car fixed and get sent to a programme
where they learn to drive, instead of having
to pay money into a system that they
cant afford.
If this is your reasoning, should not the
guidelines be applicable to offenders from
all ethnic communities? Speeding and
driving without a valid license are offenses
committed by drivers across all ethnic
communities. Since the fines are so high
in New Zealand, due to zero tolerance, the
guidelines, I feel, should be uniform for
all offenders.
One of the comments below the MaiFM
report gives the example of Australia where
offenders can apparently pay off fines in
monthly instalments.
NZ Police could review the neighbours
policy and perhaps incorporate a few
tips along the way. That could smoothen
the edges of the various approaches that
the authorities seem to be following with
regard to offenders from different ethnic
communities.

Make your Zakat count

ne of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat, is a

way of purifying ones wealth, freeing
one from the love of possessions by
encouraging humility and discipline.
An essential principle of Islam is that
everything belongs to Allah (swt). We do not
own our wealth, but have been entrusted with
worldly possessions by Him.
Zakat means purification and growth.
Possessions are purified by setting aside a
portion for those in need and, like the pruning
of plants, this cutting back encourages new
growth.
There are two types of Zakat, both of which
are compulsory for Muslims who qualify.
Zakat al-fitr is a fixed small amount, and
must be paid during Ramadan, before the Eid
prayer on Eid ul-Fitr. The amount you have
to pay for Zakat al-mal depends on the size of
your wealth and savings. While it can be paid
at any time during the (Islamic lunar) year, on
savings held during that year, many Muslims
find it convenient to pay it during Ramadan, at
the same time as Zakat al-fitr.
The annual payment of Zakat is different
from any charitable gifts given out of kindness
or generosity, otherwise known as sadaqah.
Zakat is a mandatory religious obligation,
whereas sadaqah is voluntary, but strongly
encouraged.
Zakat al-mal forms the systematic giving of
2.5% of ones net wealth each year, benefitting
targeted recipients on a sustained basis.
In the Quran (Surah at-Taubah, ayat 60),
Allah (swt) says, Alms [Zakat] are only for
the poor, the destitute, the orphans, those
appointed to collect them, those whose hearts
have to be reconciled, for (the freedom of)
slaves, for those in debt, for (those striving
in) the path of Allah and for the traveller. An
obligation imposed by Allah. And Allah is
Knowing and Wise.
From this Quranic verse ordaining Zakat,
scholars have identified eight classes of
recipient (asnaf):
1. Masakeen The destitute
2. Fuqaraa The needy or poor

}}

}}
}}

}}
}}
}}
}}
3. Amil Zakat The alms collectors
4. Fi sabi lillah In the path of God
5. Gharimun People burdened with debt
6. Ibn as-sabil The wayfarers
7. Riqab People in bondage or slavery
8. Muallaf Those who have inclined
towards Islam
In practice, we have charities in our own
community here in Auckland that fall inside
one or more of these categories, so your
support of them legitimises your Zakat.
To take a varied sample, they would include,
for example:
}} Mount Albert Islamic Trusts support for an
orphanage in Sri Lanka (iccct.org)
}} Working Together Groups project to
establish New Zealands first Islamic
orphanage/foster home (www.wtg.org.nz)
}} Fatimah Foundations work in helping
needy families (www.fatimahfoundation.
org.nz)
You can make your Zakat work harder by
donating your Zakat to a registered charity,
such as those above. The New Zealand
government encourages charity by giving
donors a tax credit on the donations they make
to registered charitable organisations. The
laws about this are as follows:
}} The organisation must be registered as a

}}

}}
}}

}}

Charitable Organisation with the Charities

Commission (CC). A list of registered
charities is given on the CC website (www.
charities.govt.nz).
It must also be recognised by the Inland
Revenue Department (IRD) as a donee
organisation. An organisation which
is a Charitable Organisation may not
necessarily be recognised by the IRD
as a donee organisation. A list of donee
organisations is given on the IRD website
(www.ird.govt.nz/donee-organisations/
donee-organisations-index.html).
The donation must be more than $5.
The amount you can claim is the lesser of
(a) 33.3% (one third) of the total donation,
or (b) 33.3% (one third) of your taxable
income. Thus, for instance, if you have
donated $200 and have a taxable income
of $100, then your tax credit will be 33.3%
of $100, and not $200. The rate of credit is
33.3%, and is not related to the income tax
rate of the donor.
To be eligible to claim the donation, you
should have a taxable income during the tax
year in which you have made the donation;
should have been resident in New Zealand;
should be an individual and not an entity
such as an organisation or a company;

}}

}}

and should hold a valid receipt issued by a

donee organisation.
The claim should be made on IRD
form IR526 (Tax credit claim form),
downloadable from the IRD website (www.
ird.govt.nz).
Here is how it works:
Imagine you want/have to give $81 away in
Zakat al-mal.
You give it to an organisation registered as a
charitable organisation with the CC and as a
donee organisation with the IRD.
The charitable organisation issues you with
a tax receipt.
You declare this on IRD form IR526.
The IRD gives you 33.3% back ($27).
However, now you have not given away
$81 in Zakat; you have only given away $54
($81 - $27). So, you must give away the $27
that the IRD returned.
You give that $27 to a CC- and IRDregistered charitable organisation, declare
it (along with any other donations in that
year), and the next tax year the IRD gives
you $9 back.
You then have to give away that $9 as Zakat.

And so on, year after year. Each year, by

giving your Zakat to a registered Muslim
charity (that is involved in one of the eight
asnafs), your donation is compounded. Your
original $81 donation has become over $117
($81 + $27 + $9 + subsequent declarations)!
You do not win or lose: you have given away
$81 in Zakat, although you will, insha Allah,
be rewarded for having fulfilled your Zakat
obligation.
The IRD loses over $36, because they
are willing to give tax credit on any charity
donation. The Muslim charity you have
donated to wins, because it receives over $117.
This Ramadan, consider giving your Zakat
to a registered Muslim charity.

Yoga can help deal with climate change

Rajendra Shende

xcept for the quiet

perennial flow of waters
in the Rhine every
ambience of the city of Bonn
has undergone a change over
the last two decades. A smaller
office of Secretariat of the United
Nations Framework on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) which began
functioning on banks of the Rhine,
while coordinating the global
efforts to reduce the emissions of
Green House Gases (GHGs), has
now been expanded to include a
multi-storeyed building and is a
part of UN Complex. To say that
the climate negotiations have
become more and more complex
is underwhelming.
The intricate titles of the global
climate meetings concluded
there on June 11, called ADP 2-9,
SBI-42, SUBSTA-42, prove the
point.
It was one of the last three
negotiations before the world
leaders take their shots in the
Paris meeting to seal a new deal
on Climate Change in December
2015. Twenty-five weeks from
now the countries have to agree
on quantifiable, concrete and
binding targets of emission
reduction of green house gases
(GHGs). They will also stamp on

the determined actions to adapt

to the climate change.

The utter failure in the

implementation of the Climate
Convention of 1992 that aimed
at
preventing
dangerous
anthropogenic interference with
Earths climate system does
not augur well while building
a new foundation. The Kyoto
Protocol of 1997 will come to an
end in 2015 without developed
countries achieving its goal
of reducing the GHGs by five
percent from its 1990 levels.
The emissions instead have now
been nearly 45 percent higher.
Complexity and mistrust among
negotiators have even increased
disproportionately.
The
objectives
of
the
negotiations in the Bonn meeting
were very clear. First, to carve
out from a draft of Geneva
Negotiating Text, which was
developed in Lima last year and
updated in Geneva early 2015,
into a streamlined and shorter
negotiating text for the world
leaders to take a final decision on
a new 2015 climate agreement at
the Paris. The agreement to be
reached by December 2015 will
enter into force in 2020. Second,
to pursue a trail of ambitious
targets in emission reductions,

financial and technology pledges

that were agreed in 2009, as part
of the Kyoto Protocol, to enhance
pre-2020
action.
Overall
objective of the new Protocol
would be to keep the rise in
temperature below 2 deg C as
compared to Pre-industrial level.
ADP, short for Ad Hoc
Working Group on the Durban
Platform for Enhanced Action, is
one of the key acronyms that has
become the cynosure for climate
negotiators and nightmare for the
media reporters. This working
group is tasked to streamline and
consolidate an extremely bulky
negotiating text of 86 pages,
103 paragraphs - each having
five options in average. In Bonn,
12 groups with two facilitators
each and battalions of UNFCCC
secretarial staff made gallant
efforts in streamlining the text.
Unfortunately, at the end, the
text was reduced to 85 pages (one
page less) with 223 paragraphs
(100 added).
To judge the work of ADP by
simply reduced numbers of pages
and paragraphs will be unfair. It
was expected that negotiations
would be used as an opportunity
to generate mutual trust for the
collective actions ahead. There
was mixed reaction if such an
opportunity was availed. One

delegate indicated Trust will

be put to test when real issue of
providing financing and climatefriendly technologies to the
developing countries would be
negotiated. We are not there yet.
Trust is still in short supply.
Past
pledges
are
rusting.
Developing countries request
to discuss pre-2020 ambitious
targets, as required by ADP, was
not admitted by the developed
countries. Negotiations on pre2020 ambitions are fracturing,
said one of the negotiators from
a developing country.
sThe
investments
in
renewable energy has beaten all
the estimates by agencies like
the World Bank and reached
more than $275 billion last
year, amidst a financial crisis.
There have been unprecedented
moves by pension funds of
colleges and universities, cities,
sub-national governments like
California and other institutions
in Europe and the US to divest
away from fossil fuel industry.
As of September 2014, $50
billion has been divested by
more than 500 funds. Pension
funds of Oxford University,
Edinburgh
University,
Georgetown
University,
the
insurance
company
AXA
and more, have announced

Black

Orange

divestment
commitments.
Credit Agricole Bank of France
is refusing to finance new coal.
And campaigns continue to grow
at hundreds more institutions
around the world. More than
140 communities in Germany
are already on 100 percent
Renewable energy supply. Many
more cities are pledged for such
targets.
Climate negotiators in Bonn
appeared to be out of pace with
happenings around them. And
now even Pope Francis has
appealed to all to combat climate
change on moral grounds.
Pressure on state-negotiators is
building due to two reasons: just
about 25 weeks are remaining
for the finish line for new legally
binding treaty. Second, with
or without state negotiators,
the non-state actors are racing
ahead leaving behind archaic
negotiating issues.
As one delegate suggested,
state negotiators need to regularly
perform yoga for developing a
mindset for building a mutual
trust. Prime Minister Narendra
Modi at the United Nations last
year had said, Yoga embodies
unity of mind and body. By
changing our lifestyle and
creating consciousness, it can
help us deal with climate change.

Yoga to be taught in central schools

uman Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani

announced that yoga will
be made compulsory in all central
schools from Class 6 to 10.
The launch of the syllabus and
course material for these classes by
the National Council of Educational

and the training module for teacher
education programme prepared
by the National Council of Teacher
Education (NCTE) comes a day
after the world celebrated the

In all central government

yoga syllabus will be taught at
the upper primary and secondary
level, 80 percent marks will be for
practicals and only 20 percent for
theory, she said, adding this wont
be an additional burden on the

learn the ancient practice diligently.
Through this, we intend to

Sikh student can join US

army with beard, turban

Sikh college student will be

able to join the US Army,
without being forced to
cut his hair, shave his beard or
stop wearing his turban thanks to a
Washington court ruling.
District Court Judge Amy
Berman Jackson ruled recently that
the Army violated Hofstra University
student Iknoor Singhs rights when
it refused to let him compete for a
spot as a contracted member of his
colleges Reserve Officer Training
Corps programme.
The court finds that defendants
have failed to show that the
application of the Armys regulations
to this plaintiff and the denial of the
particular religious accommodation
he seeks further a compelling
government interest by the least
restrictive means, the judge wrote.
She added that the Armys refusal
to permit Singh to enrol while
adhering to articles of faith that
include his hair and turban cannot
survive the strict scrutiny of the
federal law. The Army has given tens
of thousands of exceptions to its
grooming and uniform policies, the
judge wrote, and made successful

Hardev Sanotra

. Jayant Baliga, a US-based

Indian-origin scientist, is
being awarded Russias top
technology award in recognition
of his work in energy management
which brought about huge increase
in efficiency and major savings.
The award was presented to
Professor Baliga and Shuji Nakamura
last week by Russian President
Vladimir Putin at a ceremony.
Nakamura, a Nobel Laureate,
is being recognised for his work on
blue light emitting diodes (LEDs).
In Russia, the Global Energy Prize is
known as the electronics equivalent
of the Nobel Prize.
Professor Baliga invented the digital switch or the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) while working
at General Electrical research & development centre in New York state
in the US in 1983. The IGBT switches
energy hundreds of thousands of
times a second, raising the efficiency
of any equipment manifold.
Every equipment from your
refrigerator to lights to motor
vehicles has the need to use energy
efficiently. If you take away the IGBT
today, almost everything will come to
a standstill, Baliga told media on the

B. Jayant Baliga

eve of receiving the award.

Scientific American magazine
called him among the eight heroes
of the semiconductor revolution,
and President Barack Obama
awarded him the highest American
technology prize last year and he is
the 2014 recipient of the IEEE Medal
of Honour, a rare distinction.
Professor Baliga, who now teaches
to the North Carolina university as
distinguished university professor,
said that the IGBT that his invention
combines two streams of electronics
and electrical engineering and has
possibly saved the world around $24
trillion dollars by raising efficiency,
according to one detailed calculation.
I got zero out of it. But then I did

it all for humanity.

Of course, says Prof Baliga, that
he did make some money when he
started three companies, but these
were financed by venture capitalists
who exited with enormous profits at
the right time.
He says every motor today is
at least 40 percent more efficient,
the light bulb like the CFL better
by almost 75 percent and a motor
vehicle saves more than 10 percent
fuel because of his invention. He has
written 19 books and more than 500
papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Baliga passed out of IIT Madras
before going to the US for his MS and
PhD after electrical engineering after
which he joined GE where he spent
more than 15 years.
After his switch was invented,
several of his colleagues told him
that it would not work, and many
scientists said he would fall flat on
his face. But he said it stood the test
of time.
The chairman of GE at that time,
Jack Welch flew down especially
to meet him when he heard what it
could do. GE used the switch in the
several of the equipments it sold,
including medical devices.

Nikki Haley calls for removal of

secessionist flag
Arun Kumar

ne hundred and fifty years

after the end of the American civil war, South Carolinas Indian-American governor
Nikki Haley finally added her powerful voice to growing demands for
removing the rebel Confederate flag
from the State Capitol.
Public pressure to remove the
red flag with a blue diagonal cross
with 13 white stars representing the
secessionist states breaking away
from the American Union over the
issue of slavery peaked after the
horrific massacre in a historic black
church in Charleston last week.
Hundreds marched in South
Carolina over the weekend seeking
removal of the Confederate flag
from its perch after Dylan Roof.
The 21-year-old white man who

allegedly came to the church to

shoot black people and start a
race war, was seen in photographs
with a gun waving the flag.
Today we are here in a moment
of unity in our state without ill will
to say it is time to remove the flag
from our capitol grounds, said
Haley, daughter of Sikh immigrant
parents from India and the states
first non-white governor.
This flag, while an integral part
of our past, does not represent the
future of our great state, said the
two-term chief executive of the
state that had led the way out of the
Union on December 20, 1860, six
weeks after the election of Abraham
Lincoln as president.
By March 1861, emboldened
by South Carolinas example, six
more states Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and

Texas - also seceded to form the

Confederate States of America or
the Confederacy. The flag once
flew atop the State Capitol, but
by a 2000 compromise it was
moved to its location in front of
the state legislature.The flag can
only be removed from there with
the approval of two-thirds of the
General Assembly.
President Barack Obama, who
will travel to Charleston this week
to deliver the eulogy for one of the
victims, Clementa Pinckney, the
churchs pastor and a state senator,
has said the flag should be removed
and placed in a museum.

McConville and other Army

The American Civil Liberties

ong long ago, there lived a very poor couple. They had only a small hut to live
in and a little plot of land where they did farming and made a living by the
crops they grew.
But one day, the husband fell sick and the woman went to work alone. She
went into the fields and began to remove the weeds. Suddenly, she saw a gold coin lying
among the weeds. Overjoyed at this discovery, she picked it up with her trembling hands
and tied it into a knot in one corner of the long cloth she wore.Imagine her surprise and joy
when a little later, she found a sparkling red ruby lying some distance away. After this, she
found an emerald, a topaz and a diamond as long as she worked. She went back home, buying
some rice with the gold coin. She did not tell her husband about her discoveries.
What if he becomes jealous?
the woman thought. So she kept silent
and went back to work as usual,
without
her
husband
suspecting
anything.This time, she found
a silver coin. As she held it in
her hands and saw it glimmer
in the sunlight, she heard a
voice saying to her, Tell no
one of your good fortune, not
even your husband, and you
shall have more treasure.
So she went again and
again to the field and every
day, she found something or
the other - two silver coins
on some days, three gold coins on
another day, a diamond on another and so on. She hid all her
treasures in a safe place that was out of even her husbands reach. But when she went to
the field on the seventh day, she found nothing. She worked all day long and searched every
bit of the land, but there was nothing valuable that she could find.At afternoon, she felt
hungry out of exhaustion and sat down near the edge of the field to boil her rice. She lit
some firewood and was blowing into the fire when she heard the same voice say to her again,
After you have finished boiling your rice, put out the fire and dig the ground where the
woods are burning. Tell no one, not even your husband, of what you find.
She did as the voice told her and she dug out a great jar filled to the brim with gold pieces.
Trembling at her discovery and good fortune, the woman hurriedly took out one or two gold
pieces out and buried the rest as before. She ran home as fast as she could. Her husband was
surprised to see her come back at this odd hour and asked her if all was well with her.The
woman could not contain her excitement any longer. She told her husband everything
about the treasures she got. The man was overjoyed to hear about it all. Unable to restrain
himself, the man went into the village and told every one of the treasure trove.Within
a few moments, the excited villagers rushed to their land to dig up the treasure. But the
treasure was no longer there. There was neither any sign of any gold coin nor any trace of
the jar. Where are the treasures? You must have lost your heads in this high summer heat
everyone laughed in disbelief at the couple.
No no. I have seen them and I have even got some precious stones with me. cried the
woman. But as she tried to show them her gems to prove that she was right, she could find
none where she had kept them. All that she had hid in her secret place were gone too,
and the couple were as poor as they had been before. How foolish they were to disobey the
command of the voice! This is the origin of the orange-tree.

champions attacked from both the
flanks with Birendra Lakra, Gurbaj
Singh, Dharamvir Singh, Nikkin
Thimmiah, centre-half Sardar and
Walmiki on the forefront of the
strategy. Akashdeep Singh got two
good opportunities to tap in.
World No.17 Poland got their
moment and came close to scoring
off a penalty corner in the 21st
minute.
Pawel Bratkowski flicked the
ball high and Indian custodian
P.R. Sreejesh was up for the
challenge, thrusting his right
shoulder to ward off the danger.
After several moments that

saw Indian forwards lacking

finishing touches, they scored in
the 23rd minute. Lakra drove the
ball inside the circle, only to be
deflected by a defender. Yuvraj,
lurking in front of goalkeeper
Arkadiusz Matuszak, pounced on
it, lifting the ball into the net to
make it 1-0.
In
the
dying
moments
before the half-time, India were
rewarded with a penalty corner
but Manpreet Singhs strike was
palmed away by Matuszak.
Indian players organised their
attack more purposefully in the
third quarter but they messed
up a penalty corner variation.
However, they recovered and
got their second goal as Sardar
surged ahead and exercised a
reverse hand strike from the top
of the circle to gave India the 2-0
comfort in the 42nd minute.

Bangladesh had built
a brick wall of 307
runs. If looked from just this point,
they were likely to win. Unless the
blue truck running straight into
the wall is India. India was in
the top spot on 101/2. Kohli had
just walked in, and everyone on
the pitch and outside knew what
he could do. The talented Taskin
ran in. Mirpur was slumbering no
more. Taskin balled a short, wide
ball and the out of form Kohlis
loose shot ensured the ball edged
into the safe hands of the captain
behind the stumps.
Bangladeshs batsmen got off
to a solid start (Iqbal 60, Sarkar
54, Al Hasan 52). But none of
them capitalised on it leaving
Bangladesh all out on 307. India
came out with their fearsome
openers Rohith Sharma (63 runs)
and ShikarDhawan (30 runs), but
after they got out, the game was
pretty boring. Bangladesh got

Virat
Kohli,
the
media
proclaimed Tendulkar hasnt
had much luck recently with 5
runs from 25 balls in his last 3
ODI matches. Kohli likes to keep
his press conferences as strong as
his pull shots. He breathes in the
bowlers confidence and exhales
runsa regular rhythm he has
set for himself in ODIs. He loves
to be on top and that proved to be
his downfall. Sharma was playing
flawlessly and all Kohli had to do
was rotate the strike. But things
went the other way.
The aforementioned truck?
The driver of that blue truck?
Of course, its Mahendra Singh
Dhoni. The big man couldnt be
stopped by the BBCI let alone
Mustafizur Rahman. The Indian
captain ran into Mustafizur in the
25th over, ramming his left arm
into the 19-year-old debutant,
resulting in Mustafizur to leave
the field for a while.
India lost because of many
factors. One big reason was that

Bangladesh wasnt scared. They

played aggressive shots to the
best bowlers of the Indian team.
They respected the ability of the
players but werent intimated by
the pomp and glory surrounding
the Men in Blue. The X factor was
Mustafizur Rahman. As Dhoni
said, the best way to bowl on the
pitch was to vary the pace and
bounce and Rahman executed it
perfectly, gifting himself a 5/50 on
debut. Another reason for the loss
was Indias inability to rebuild
partnerships after the opening
partnership was broken To quote
Dhoni, We were not able to get
big partnerships, which I feel
is crucial when youre looking
to chase 300 or 305. Another
decisive factor to Bangladesh
winning was captain Mortazas
willingness to experiment with his
XI. Unlike Dhoni who stubbornly
sticks with the Ashwin-Jadeja
combination, Mortaza played 4
pace bowlers. Small details such
as this played a significant role for
Bangladeshs win.

An exclusive conversation with the smart, suave, sexy and talented international top model, actor, A-lister

some trivia - all in the name of a Chai Latte.
Maya Shivam

I realised it was such a new

creative way to see the world
and when the industry invited
me to India I was so beyond
excited. 24 years later Im still
going strong. TV presenting,

extensively as an international

of iconic fashion houses and
shooting for international
fashion titles before making
the transition to television.
Well-known for his work
as an actor, presenter and

commands an influential
brand in New Zealand and
beyond. Colin has modeled
for a number of prestigious
fashion

which he led the runway

has extensive experience

An international actor

Amongst other things, here

There are so many guesses

people assume is because Im

Maya: So how and where
did it all start?
Colin: I was discovered to
model on my first day walking
up Queen Street going to
Auckland University. From
that day onwards in 1991
people kept asking me to
model. I think it was an era of
change. Naomi Campbell was
on the scene as a Supermodel
and by 1992 the world fell in
love with powerfully athletic

have won Miss Universe.

I was lucky to be teamed up
with the National Champion

we were titled Bollywood
and Hollywood because of
our looks. There was a shock
elimination and it was us.
New Zealand has given us
such incredible support and
the outcry has been most
amusing. Many of us celebs
never had the vehicle to
garner votes like the radio
hosts and thats where we
became collateral damage.
Though we accept our fate
graciously we can day we had
a lot more to offer.
The best part is I made
a life-long friend in Kristie.

She had never been to an

Indian event and the awards
show was a highlight to her.
Especially meeting the Prime
Minister John Key.
Maya: It was all going well
till the shock elimination.
Quite clearly all of New

with the decision. I
really think the two of

like a wild card entry
of sorts. It would have
been such a treat to watch
the intended Bollywood
number.So where to from
here?
Colin:
Currently
Im
seen in the advertising of
Newmarkets Auckland Style
of Living campaign and an

Ambassador for Sky City.

When I was finally convinced
to do DWTS, I asked the
brand FAMOUS VODKA,
which I am the face of, if we
can delay the international
shoot. We will be shooting
in Europe, Africa and the
Middle East. I signed a multiyear year contract. Also Im
being courted to host some
TV shows. Im very picky. Its
about quality not quantity.
Maya:
Whats
your
message for our readers?
Colin: Life is an adventure.
Surround yourselves with
people that lift you up and not
pull you down and you will
always fly.

Nidhita Gosai

How
has
your
family
supported your dream?
The support from my mom
has been incredible. I give a lot of
credit to my mom. It is because of
her support and guidance all these
years, I have been able to master
this dance form. She kindles the
flame for my passion every now
and then and also supports me in
coping up with the deadlines of
studies.

When did you start learning

Bharatanatyam?
My mum is from Fiji and she
loves dancing. Since she could not
pursue her passion, she put me
into a dance school at an early age.
Initially I was pushed into learning
dance but gradually it became a
part of my life. I started loving this
wonderful art form and couldnt
stay a day without practising.
I was trained under Mrs
Kalaichelvi Uthayakumaran from
Narthana Aalayam School of
Indian Dance. She has been my
teacher since I was eight. I also
learnt a bit of Kuchipudi when
I went to study in Dharamshala
(Himachal Pradesh, India) for a
year.
What do you like the most
about the dance?
For me, Bharatanatyam is tough
and at the same time interesting. It

at times it was tough to manage

both but eventually I got used to
the schedule. I practice around
two to three times a week because
without regular practice one tends

arm, wrist and fingers to perfect

the dance moves. Bharatanatyam
rejuvenates the body and the soul;
it is like meditation for me.
Where have you performed so
far?
I have performed at school level
and also at different community
cultural shows in Auckland. I also
used to teach Bharatnatyam at a
small community organisation

mainly from Fiji and not only

school children but also middle
aged women would come to learn.
How would you

manage

Coping up with studies and

dance has been difficult at times
because both are important to
me. I would go to school then rush
for the dance practice and return

Growing up I always wanted to

know more about classical dance,
so when the time came I took a
course and completed the second
of a Diploma in Bharatanatyam. It
is one of many programmes that
are available to overseas students
through the Annamalai University
in Chennai. Some other girls in
my dance school are pursuing a
degree in Bharatanatyam and also

I know a few girls from South

Who

been

My moms hard work and

biggest
encouragements
for
me. My dance teacher Mrs

big inspiration for me. Whenever
I see her dancing, I say to myself
that I need to be a perfect dancer

Looking forward...
I want to learn more about
Bharatanatyam and want to
spread the knowledge of this
dance as much as possible. I
want to teach Bharatanatyam to
children and anyone who would
like to learn, for it is important to
keep this form of art alive in New
Zealand.
I would also like to travel to
India to learn Kathak, as I have
always admired it. It is another
form of classical dance that
has similar concepts to that of
Bharatanatyam. I never want to
stop learning dance, so this is my
new dream.
