(b) The cross-section of a bar is given by (144 + 0.01x2) mm2, where x is its distance from one end in mm.
If the length of the bar is 240 mm and E = 100 kN/mm2, what is the change in length under a load
of 4 kN?
[7 marks]
(c) A steel bolt of diameter 10 mm passes through a brass tube of internal diameter 15 mm and external
diameter 25 mm. The bolt is tightened by a nut so that the length of tube is reduced by 0.15 mm. If the
temperature of assembly is raised by 50C, estimate the axial stresses in the bolt and the tube before
and after heating. Assume length of tube as 1000 mm. Material properties for steel and Brass respectively
are: Es = 2 105 N/mm2, s = 1.2 105 /C, Eb = 1 105 N/mm2, b = 1.9 105 /C.
[13 marks]
Q.2 (a) Determine the temperature rise necessary to induce buckling in a 1 m long circular rod of diameter
40 mm. Assume the rod to be pinned at its ends and the coefficient of thermal expansion as 20 106 /C.
[5 marks]
(b) The stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes through a point in a body are 80 MPa and 50 MPa
both tensile. Determine the maximum value of the shear stress which can be applied so that the
maximum value of the permissible principal stress is limited to 120 MPa. What will be the inclination of
the principal stress and the magnitude of the maximum shear stress?
[10 marks]
(c) A 600 mm long steel cylinder is made up of 4 mm thick plates. The inside diameter of the cylinder is
120 mm. When it is subjected to an internal pressure of 5 MPa, the increase in its volume is found to be
5000 mm3. Determine the value of Poissons ratio and the modulus of rigidity. E = 205 GPa.
[10 marks]
Q.3 (a) Strains at a point on a specimen are recorded with the help of a three-element rectangular rosette. The
observations are as follows:
0 = 400 strain, 45 = 250 strain, 90 = 300 strain. Determine principal strains at the point.
[12 marks]
(b) A safety valve of 120 mm diameter is designed to blow off at a gauge pressure of 1 MPa. A close
coiled helical spring of 200 mm mean diameter is used to hold the valve in position. Determine the
diameter of the coils of the spring and the number of turns required if the initial compression of the
spring is 60 mm and the maximum value of shear stress is 70 MPa. G = 84 GPa.
[13 marks]
Q.4 (a) A beam of rectangular cross-section 50 mm wide and 100 mm deep is simply supported over a span
of 1500 mm. It carries a concentrated load of 80 kN, 500 mm from the left support. Calculate
(i) the maximum tensile stress in the beam and indicate where it occur.

(ii) the vertical deflection of the beam at a point 500 mm from the left support.

E for the material of the beam = 2 105 MPa.

[15 marks]
(b) A thick spherical shell of 100 mm internal diameter is subjected to an internal fluid pressure of 30 N/mm2.
If the permissible tensile stress is 80 N/mm2, find the thickness of the shell.
[10 marks]
Q.5 (a) Principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 100 MPa tensile, 50 MPa tensile and 25 MPa
compressive. Determine the factor of safety against failure based on various theories. The elastic limit
in simple tension is 220 MPa and Poissons ratio 0.3.
[10 marks]
(b) A simply supported beam of I-section as shown deflects 12 mm when subjected to a uniformly distributed
load of 50 kN/m length. Determine the safe load if the beam is used as a column with both ends fixed.
