Exercise 1

A volunteer is a person who works at a job without pay. In many schools, students in twelfth
grade are required to complete a community-service project before they graduate. At Martin
High School, volunteers work at least three hours a week. Some students volunteer at day-care
centers. Many seniors are tutoring young children in reading. Other students work at museums
and in hospitals. Members of the football team are coaching at an after-school sports program.
Each year the guidance counselor gives students a list of organizations seeking volunteers.
Seniors have to write a proposal for their community-service project, and the counselor has to
approve it. After students have completed their projects, they write reports telling what they
learned.
