War left behind a massive economic crisis; this forces Mexico to seek help from
wherever it can find it. Mexico found itself on extreme poverty after our Independence.
Economy completely stopped; people thought everything was getting worse, and it was.
There were many reasons that caused this crisis in Mexico. A large part of the towns and
territory were damaged from the armed conflict. Roads were destroyed, fields were
abandoned and public finances were ruined because the disorganization of the State did not
allow a proper collection of taxes.
After the Independence, one of the major problems was that the new rulers had to
lead a nation in bankruptcy. People have high expectations for the new government, despite
the fact of national poverty. Besides all this, Mexico still struggled to be recognized as an
independent nation-state. Because of this, Spain tried to reconquer Mexico several times.
Mexico had to spend money that it didnt have in order to defend the nation, and currently
we are in need more than ever before. After we defended our nation from Spain several
times, northern colonization attempts started in Texas. At the end of the eighteenth century,
the colonial government of the New Spain had allowed American settlers to begin an
occupation of the territories at the northern border. This colonization allowed that Moses
Austin established, along with other 300 families, in the province of Texas.
Mexico could seek help in foreign nations, but this is difficult due to the actual
conflicts between liberals and conservatives. Europe and the USA are the current world
powers, so we could seek out to them. The conservatives proposed to preserve the existing
social order from the colony, a monarchy or a centralist republic, in which the country was

controlled by a central government both politically and economically with one Constitution,
this is: that the states were not autonomous. This group was composed mainly by the
wealthy classes, intellectuals and professionals or clergy and army members. The liberals
project wanted to establish a federal republic in which the State was autonomous, this is:
each regulated its policies and economy independently and the Federation was limited to
regulating relations between the states and abroad. Creoles and mestizos, who were part of
the middle class, formed the liberal group.
If we choose to seek help from other nations, we would be in debt with them,
economically speaking. War damage sums up to 15 million dollars; Mexico would spend
years paying this debt, but it is the only option. Both liberals and conservatives need
support from powerful foreign nations that are interested in Mexico, in order to obtain
money and armament for the struggle between these two factions.
Mexico has gone through worse situations; seeking help from other nations might
seem like a bad option at first, but we need it if we want to continue being a country.
History has taught us that pride destroys, so maybe it is just right to ask for help. Over all
other things, remember Mexico.
