    Introduction

    WeareproposingtheaboveeventtobeheldinFacultyofComputerScienceandInformation
    Technology(FCSIT),organisedbytheundergraduatestudentsofOperatingSystemcourse,semester
    January2015.Theeventproposedisaninteractiveworkshopinwhichaninvitedinstructor,Mr
    HafizulRasydanYaacobofAmwayITwilleducatestudentsonLinuxOperatingSystems,
    particularlyontheLinuxkernel.ThisworkshopisextremelybeneficialtostudentsasLinuxisa
    highlydemanded,widelyusedopensourcesoftwarethatisfreefordevelopmentanddistribution.
    TheLinuxkernelisthebaseofLinuxOperatingSystemandthebasisfordevelopmentofother
    platformssuchasAndroidOperatingSystem.Theinvitedinstructor,MrHafizulhas11years
    experienceintheITindustry,includingworkingexperienceinrenownedcompaniessuchas
    MaybankBerhadandHewlettPackard.HeisalsothecofounderofHPCSSdnBhd,anIT
    companythathasparticipatedinmajorcontractssuchasprojectswiththeMinistryofDefence.
    HPCSSdnBhdisamajorsupporterofopensourcesystems,includingLinux.

    Justification&Rationale

    Throughthisworkshop,studentswillbeabletounderstandtheimportanceoftheOperatingSystem
    courseandhowtheknowledgecanbeappliedintherealworld.Anumberofcompaniespreferto
    hirestaffwithexperienceusingmultipleoperatingsystems,especiallyopensourcedoneslike
    Linux.Withtheexposure,students careerchoiceswillbroadenandtheirnewlydevelopedskillwill
    increasetheirvalueinthehighlycompetitivejobmarket.

    ThethemeoftheworkshopisOperatingSystemKernel.

    Objectives

    1. Toassiststudentsinvisualisingtheconceptofoperatingsystemsandkernels.
    2. Toexposestudentstodifferentplatformsotherthanthecommerciallyrenownedonessuchas
    Windows.
    3. TocreateaconducivelearningenvironmentinwhichstudentswillbeabletoexploreLinux
    undertheguidanceofanexpert.
    4. Topromotelearninginworkshopenvironmentsoutsideofnormalclasshours.
