Shocking and shaky facts about Earthquakes
An earthquake is the trembling or shaking of the ground that we feel when
pieces of earths crust push against each other hard enough to overcome friction
and begin to slip. The movement is felt on the surface as earthquake. Earthquake
typically just last seconds. In a medium to large earthquakes, the ground shakes
strongly about 10-30 seconds. After the first slips, the earth readjusts causing
more earthquakes called aftershocks. These can occur hours, days, or weeks later.
Earthquakes can be predicted but not with precision. Attempts at
predicting when and where earthquakes occur have met with some success in
years. At present, China, Japan, Russia and the United States are the countries
most actively supporting such research. Potential clues that will lead to the
predictions of earthquakes that may hit acertain area are the following: a chain of
low magnitude tremors called foreshocks, tilting or bulging of the land surface
and changes in the earths magnetic field, water level of wells and even animal
behavior. Also, earthquakes cannot be prevented, but effective measures can be
taken to reduce damage to properties and lives.
We can measure the strength of an earthquake. Seismologists, people who
study vibrations of the earth, use different kinds of instruments to measure these
vibrations. One of them is the seismograph. This instrument measures the strength
or the intensity of an earthquakes shock waves. They are measured on the Richter
scale from 1-10, the latter being the strongest. The Richter Scale was devised by
an American Seismologist named Charles Richter in 1935. It is the worlds
standard measuring device for an earthquake magnitude.
Perhaps you would want to know where the safest place to be during an
earthquake. Out in the open when nothing can fall on you. People get hurt because
objects can fall on you. If indoors, take cover under a piece of heavy furniture.
Stay undercover until the shaking stops. If outdoors, move into the open, away
from buildings, street lights and electrical wires. The first and most important
thing to do is to remain calm and do not panic.
6. Answering of Presentation/ Motive Question

2. What are some of the devastating effects that may happen to lives and properties

8. Analysis and Discussion

properties. Read their dialog.
Carla:
An earthquake poses significant hazards to lives and
properties, doesnt it?
Mario:
Yes it does. One cannot help to have cold feet when it strikes a place?
Dennis: Another destructive effect of an earthquake is the undersea tremor called
tidal wave or tsunami. These towering walls of water can strike populated
coastlines. Infrastructures such as buildings, bridges and houses near the
coastlines have literally been swallowed up. They can vanish like magic!
Rhoda:
Thats horrible! It is indeed a Herculean Task for the government and the
people to recover from the devastating effects of earthquakes.
