Math Techbook

Pint-sized puzzler

Online math program at Voorhees

Middle School becomes permanent
supplement to seventh, eighth grades
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The school year may be finished for students at Voorhees
Middle School, but the new digital math program that was being
piloted at the school since January is here to stay.
At the most recent meeting of
the Voorhees Township BOE, the
board approved use of Discovery
Educations Math Techbook in
math classes for all students in
grades seven and eight for the
2015-2016 school year.
According to VMS math
teacher Tamie Wilhelm, the Techbook is an online digital course
that supplements the current
math curriculum while also
being aligned with the state common core standards and containing problems that mimic those on
the annual Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers assessments.
Wilhelm said teachers have
been critically evaluating a num-

ber of math textbooks for the past

two years and believe Techbook is
the best program available for
VMS blended learning approach, which combines face-toface instruction and online learning.
Wilhelm said she also believes
the Techbook is going to be a
perfect complement to VMS
one-to-one iPad initiative.
It has appealing content, and
its academically rigorous, Wilhelm said. Additionally, the
Techbook includes progressively
difficult levels of real-world problems.
As such, Wilhelm said the program would provide opportunities to address the needs of all
students, the ones who are struggling in math, and advanced students who will have access to
higher-level course work.
VMS math teacher Margaret
Frasca said the program presents
students with lessons divided into
three areas: discovery, practice

LED bulbs sheds new light

on savings and public

2 THE VOORHEES SUN JULY 17, 2015

Library book sale sets new record

By Freeholder Michelle Gentek

The Freeholder
Board has launched
a new initiative with
utility company Atlantic City Electric
to convert 900 existing street light fixtures
to
energy
efficient
light-emitting diode
(LED) bulbs. This
new hardware will reduce operating
costs, enhance public safety and increase the longevity of street lights
by 400 percent. The Camden County
Improvement Authority, the financing and development arm of the
county, is providing the assistance
for the six participating municipalities to save a combined $100,000 per
year.
This program works on a number
of different levels. From a public
safety perspective, these brighter
lights provide better visibility while
acting as a deterrent to crime and
vandalism. In addition, these new
LED lights will create a significant
cost savings in energy consumption
and contribute to Camden Countys
sustainable
infrastructure.
This $800,000 project was funded
from the US Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD)
Community Development Block
Grant (CBDG) program. These
CBDG funds are used to benefit lowand moderate-income areas. The
lighting is being installed within
qualified census tracks by providing
energy efficient lighting and improved public safety.
I want to compliment Atlantic City
Electric for partnering with us on
this innovative option for government agencies to help save taxpayer
money and assist us in shepherding
our overall operations into a more
sustainable future. We are creating
a safer environment, saving taxpayer money and continuing to
shrink our collective carbon foot-

print.
Atlantic City Electric will convert the
identified existing
street light fixtures to
LED in areas of
Berlin
Borough,
Clementon, Lindenwold, Pine Hill, Stratford and Winslow
Township, reducing
operating costs and increasing the
lifespan and eliminating maintenance. LEDs have a life-span of
about 20 years compared to about
five years for a standard High Pressure
Sodium
bulb.
The Freeholder Board worked on
a separate LED project earlier in the
year with Atlantic City Electric replacing facility and roadway lighting. This project consisted of about
100 bulbs throughout the utilitys
coverage area, replacing bulbs along
the White Horse Pike and at the Department of Public Works facility in
Lindenwold.
This is a continuation of the commitment the Freeholder Board
made in 2014 by crafting an ambitious roadmap to save taxpayers
money. This multifaceted plan was
created from the principles of conservation, efficiency and building
stability in our operations. The
Board focused on a variety of ways
to implement new green practices
that will be beneficial today and improve our quality of life in the future.

Hundreds of bargain hunters

and collectors helped to set a new
two-day record at the Camden
County Librarys Spring Book
Sale, on Friday, June 12 at the
Voorhees branch.
The Camden County Library
System reports its recent spring
book sale earned the library
$17,905, beating the previous
spring sale record of $16,648.
We surpassed our previous
two-day sale record set just last
spring by $1,257 or over 7 percent, said Voorhees Branch

Manager William Brahms as

chief organizer of the sale.
Brahms praised the staff and
volunteers who worked to make
the sale possible. We had over 75
staff and volunteers work on the
sale during the year.
When the sale started on Friday morning, over 250 people
were standing in line and came
through the doors during just the
first five to 10 minutes. And the
stream of customers seeking bargains remained steady throughout the two days, Brahms said.

He predicts the librarys next

sale in the fall, a three-day affair,
will attract even more book
lovers, bargain hunters and collectors. The volume of material
sold and moved keeps going up.
I believe the demise of brick
and mortar stores and chains like
Borders is creating a growing demand for the quality materials we
offer, Brahms said. Its all for a
good cause and definitely helps
the library. Thats why we invest
so much time and effort into each
sale.

in our opinion

Happy Fourth of July

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are

rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things may be at times
in our country our economy is still
recovering, race is still an issue, and
the Phillies cant seem to win a baseball game anymore things could be a
lot worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Iraq.

Independence Day 2015

We give thanks for all the liberties we
have as Americans. We give thanks for
the sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.

Imagine what it must be like to live

in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Congress and where the office of the president have functioned and survived for
239 years.
We live in a nation where, for the

most part, were free to do as we please.

This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liberties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
this weekend.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.

Police to start DNA Home Asset Marking Program

In an ongoing effort to keep our community safe, the Voorhees Township Police
Department will be introducing the DNA
Home Asset Marking Program. It is a collaboration with the Camden County Police
Chiefs Association and Applied DNA Sciences. The program enhances home security. A single container of plant DNA materials provided by the company contains an
indelible and invisible liquid that is specific to each owner. Residents and homeowners mark their valuables and vehicles with
this fluorescing liquid that is easily identifiable by law enforcement under an ultra
violet light. Once applied, the liquid is
nearly impossible to remove.
If any of the marked items are stolen
and recovered, police can identify the property as stolen, link the criminals to the
crime scene and ensure that stolen property is returned to its rightful owner. Homeowners receive warning decals to use on
windows, doors and vehicles to enhance
the deterrent value of the DNA Home
Asset Marking Program.

The DNA Home Asset

Marking Program provides a simple and cost-effective way for residents
to deter crime and protect
property as well as providing law enforcement the
ability to identify the
rightful owners of lost or
stolen property.
The cost of the proMichael
gram is approximately Mignogna
$70 for plant DNA that
will mark approximately MAYORS MESSAGE
100 items. Any residents
interested in the program can contact
Voorhees Police Investigator Scappichio at
(856) 882-1107 or at bscappichio@vtpd.com.
Keeping our homes safe is a partnership
between the police and our residents.
The second show in our Summer Twilight Series will be on Thursday, July 16
(rain date July 23) and will feature Evolution: A Tribute to Journey. This performance will re-create the history and hit

songs of the legendary band. The show is

free and starts at 7:30 p.m. at Connolly
Park.
From July 20 through July 25, the
Voorhees Police Department will hold its
2nd Annual Junior Police Academy. The
program teaches our young people from
the ages of 12 to 16 to appreciate and respect the duties and life of a police officer.
Interested parents and applicants can contact Lt. Dennis Ober at (856) 882-1110
(dober@vtpd.com). Applications and forms
for the Junior Police Academy can be
found at http://vtpd.com/bureauofcommunity-affairs/. Applications must be submitted by July 1 to be considered.
Voorhees Township is offering discounted tickets to Moreys Piers in Wildwood. Tickets are available in the Municipal Clerks Office at Voorhees Town Hall.

Trailblazers will raise
own funds for project
I read with interest reader Tracye McArdles letter regarding
the new Trailblazers Club at
Voorhees Middle School.
Ms. McArdle suggested that it
would be a good lesson for the students if the trail was built based
on funding not from taxpayers
but their own fundraising.
Well, Ms. McArdle, the Trailblazers agree.
Fundraising is one of the important lessons our members
hope to learn from this experience. For this 1/4 mile trail, the
members plan to invest their own
labor and use natural materials
found on location. If we do need
tools or equipment, we plan on
using those provided by the mem-

bers, or donated or borrowed

from others. (By the way were
looking for some bow saws, rakes
and branch clippers if you have
any. And somebody with a chainsaw would be real helpful).
If we need to incur expenses,
we plan on raising funds to cover
these and to partner with local
businesses who have expertise in
helpful areas. (Get ready Lowes,
were headed your way.)
During our meeting with the
Voorhees Township Committee,
they asked how much our trail
would cost, and we told them we
hoped we could do it for free. And
this will continue to be our goal.
Our aim is to make Voorhees a
better place to live, not to increase
your tax burden.

Advisor, VMS Trailblazers Club

and application.
In the discovery phase, students are presented with situations and asked to investigate and
come up with a conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts.
Theyre not just told things,
Frasca said. They have to try to
discover it.
Frasca said the practice phase,
which consists of practice and
play sections, is where teachers
can look for student fluency in actual mathematical exercises.
In the practice section, Frasca
said students will be asked to try
an exercise, and if they get it
wrong, they can get on-screen
feedback from the program to
help guide them before being
asked to try it again.
In the play section, Frasca said
students would earn online
badges for getting correct answers.

Im planning to use it to differentiate, so I dont know that all of

my students will need the coach
section. Some can go right to the
play part of the practice, Frasca
said.
According to Frasca, this is
where PARCC-like exercises will
appear, where students might
have to drag and drop things on
screen or where problems with
multiple correct answers could be
asked.
In the final application phase,
Frasca said students might be
presented with a real life situation, or might have to watch a
short video much like on the
PARCC assessments and then
apply the skills they just learned
and react to it.
Frasca said the Techbook
would provide teachers with a
planning page just like a traditional textbook would, and would
also have a teacher database page
where teachers could see how students scored and view a breakdown of every question they answered and how many attempts it
took.
