Assignment A
Marks 10

Answer all questions.

1. Discuss the importance of Information as a resource.
2. How is MIS used in Personnel Management?
3. What is the concept of Enterprise Resource Planning?
4. Explain how is organization a system, where inputs are processed to get a
desired output.
5. What does the term Feasibility mean? What feasibility requirements concern
the System Analyst?
6. How do you create an expert system?
7. How is the information useful in system analysis? Explain
8. Write short notes on any three of the following
a. Primary & Secondary memory
b. Operating System
Operating System (OS)
OS is a set of programs that playing a major role for monitoring and
controlling devices (PCs, laptops, mobiles and tabletsetc.) activities
.It is an interface between a user and computer resources (MemoryCPU-Applications-Devices).It manages computer resources to provide
services to computer programs. Without OS the PC is useless.
Operating System Tasks:
OS is controls inputs and output devices , manages transfer of
application in and out memory ,provides and organizes CPU processing
times ,maintains security and user access to resources ,provides ability
of errors detection and corrections and provides user interface via
commands graphical user Interface(GUI).
Operating System Types
Based in Type of applications and computer OS categorized as follow:

(1)Single User, Single task

User can do one thing at a time
Example: PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) OS
(2)Single User, Multitasks
User is able to use multiple applications simultaneously
Example: Windows OS
(3)Multi user Operating System
Allow multiple users to simultaneously use resources on single
computer
Example: UNIX OS.
(4)Real Time Operating System
It used in places that require higher time response .It can be Hard RTOS
(time is fixed) or Soft RTOS (time is changeable).
(5)Distributed Operating System
Data can be stored and processed on a multiple computers
Example: Network OSs
Examples of famous operating systems:
1-Windows (Microsoft) 3-Android OS
2-Mac (Apple)
c. Networking
Network is a set of nodes or devices (computers and computerized peripherals such as printers)
that connected together through communication links (wired or wireless media.).
To send date from place to another you need a combination of software (instruction sets that make
possible the service that we expect from the a network) and hardware (to move signals from one place
to another)
Computer networking is allow you to share your files with by using different methods like File
Transfer Protocol (FTP) , P2P - Peer to Peer File Sharing, Email and Online Sharing Services.
Networks are distinguished based on their geographical span. A network can be as small as
distance between your mobile and as large as the internet itself, covering the whole geographical
world.
To install and design a network you need to determine what network layout topologies used;
network topologies are categorized into the following basic types:

Bus: A single cable, the backbone functions as a shared communication medium that devices
attach or tap into with an interface connector, if any device faced a failure the other devices are
not affected. Just shared medial failure effects the entire network

Ring: every device has exactly two neighbors for communication purposes. All messages travel
through a ring in the same direction any failure effects the entire network

Star: all devices are connected to a central PC ;if any device faced a failure the other devices
are not affected

Mesh: every device connects to every other; if any device faced a failure the other devices are
not affected

Network architecture are categorized into two main types; client \server and peer to peer networks,
in client \server network one PC acts as central device to provide the service and the other requests
service but in later all device have equal weight to use the resources.
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet
Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. The system is called an Intranet If PCs are
connected internally in an enterprise without any connection outside to world but if the connection
spans through cross-enterprise boundaries is called Extranet

Network spans geographically to different areas; it can be categorized as:

Local Area Network (LAN): it spanned inside a building, office or a campus, size is limited to a
few kilometers.
Wide Area Network (WAN): It covers a wide area which may span across provinces and even
a whole country or even the whole world.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): Its size between LAN and WAN .It covers area inside a
city.

d. E Commerce
e. Internet as a source of business information

Assignment B
Marks 10

Answer all questions.

Read the case study given below and answer the questions given at the
end
Case Study
A waiter takes an order at a table, and then enters it online via one of the six
terminals located in the restaurant dining room. The order is routed to a printer in
the appropriate preparation area:
the cold item printer if it is a salad,
the hot-item printer if it is a hot sandwich or
the bar printer if it is a drink.
A customers meal check-listing (bill) the items ordered and the respective prices
are automatically generated. This ordering system eliminates the old threecarbon-copy guest check system as well as any problems caused by a
waiters handwriting. When the kitchen runs out of a food item, the cooks send
out an out of stock message, which will be displayed on the dining room
terminals when waiters try to order that item. This gives the waiters faster
feedback, enabling them to give better service to the customers. Other system
features aid management in the planning and control of their restaurant
business. The system provides up-to-the-minute information on the food items
ordered and breaks out percentages showing sales of each item versus total
sales. This helps management plan menus according to customers tastes. The
system also compares the weekly sales totals versus food costs, allowing
planning for tighter cost controls. In addition, whenever an order is voided, the
reasons for the void are keyed in. This may help later in management decisions,
especially if the voids consistently related to food or service. Acceptance of the
system by the users is exceptionally high since the waiters and waitresses were
involved in the selection and design process. All potential users were asked to
give their impressions and ideas about the various systems available before one
was chosen.

Questions:
a) In the light of the system, describe the decisions to be made in the area of
strategic planning, managerial control and operational control? What information
would you require to make such decisions?
b) What would make the system a more complete MIS rather than just doing
transaction processing?
c) Explain the probable effects that making the system more formal would have on
the customers and the management.
