Exercises:

No. 1, Containers and tote tanks:

The following portable containers are taken onboard. Discuss which ones should be placed in classified
area and which ones in unclassified.

Epoxy container

Rigger container

Food container for catering

Methanol tank

Hypochlorite tank

No. 2. Fire walls & fire rated decks

From your experiences, do you see examples where pipe or cable penetrations through fire rated
decks or walls are not made properly?

Mention / list some examples!

Should check of such items not be part of the preventive maintenance (PPM), i.e. check of safety
critical items (SCE's)?

No. 3, Overall layout considerations

On an installation methanol storage and pumping facilities, where would it be appropriate to locate
tank(s) and pump(s) for this service?

Would we prefer grating or plated decks?

What could otherwise be proposed to minimize risk in relation to these facilities?

No. 4, Hazardous area classification diesel and glycol

Around a tank with diesel oil (environment, max. temperature 40 C), is it required to make
hazardous area classification here?

For a closed, pressurized heating medium system (30% glycol, 70 water) with valves and flanged
connections, operating at 130C, should be make hazardous area classification here?

No. 4A, Hazardous area classification blocking/natural ventilation

Evaluate for the following case, if the ventilation is sufficient to ensure secondary sources of release will
only generate zone 2:

Minimum velocity of wind from the side of platform: 0.5 m/sec.

Area of this side: 37.5 m length x 8 m height = 302 m2
Cross section area on this side of the platform assumed blocked by 50% for free air inflow
The width of the platform is 58 m

The exercise:
a) Calculate the number of air changes per hour for this case
b) Evaluate the number of air changes against IP 15 requirements
c) Is it OK or not?

No. 5, Layout considerations provision for future expansion

Are there other possible future expansion options than those mentioned in the lesson, we should take
into consideration in initial design?
No. 6, Offshore Crane

An offshore crane rated for a SWL of 45 tons @ radius = 12 meter for internal platform lift, what can
that approximately take (SWL) from a supply boat at same lifting radius, when the significant wave
height H1/3 = 1,5 m?

What harm can a turbine exhaust or excessive heat from a flare do to the crane wires?
On your installation, how is wire change planned to take place (where should reels for old wire and
reels for new wire be placed)? Is there sufficient space for this operation?

No. 7, Crane & laydown areas

From your own experience, do you always see that the crane driver has overview both to the supply
boat and to the laydown areas?

Some bad examples to mention?

Do we typically see missing lay down areas?

It so, please mention the most important of those we forget

No. 8, Equipment nozzle loads

Read the attached article "Compressors are not pipe anchors".

What is the opinion regarding this issue?

Does mechanical engineers view different on this than piping engineers?

No. 9, Pipe stress

What is most likely to happen when/if we overstress a pipe spool "too much"? (what is weakest)

When putting a pipe spool into position (during construction) how accurate should the measures
approximately be of the spool (+/- 1 mm, +/-10 mm, +/-50 mm)?

What is the correct thing to do, if you experience that hook-up spools are not accurate enough?

No. 10, 3-point supported compressor, turbine or pump skids

What is good by the 3-point support?

What is bad by the method?

No. 11, NPSH Water Injection Pump

A water injection pump with a capacity of 200 m3/hour is planned to operate at 6000 RPM.

What (approximately) will the NPSHR be?

How can we get that?

No. 12, NPSH for ASBAA-P-3611
Calculate NPSH for Oil/Water Booster pump under the following assumptions.

ASBAA-V-3401 (feeding vessel) is located 8 meters above the centerline of P-3611

ASBAA-V-3401 operates at 2.8 barg

ASBAA-V-3401 operates at 37.8 deg. C

Density of fluid is 888 kg/m3

Pressure loss in piping and fittings is 4 m

No. 13, Inline temporary strainer

What is the correct flow direction through such a strainer?

In your daily work, do you see examples where they are installed incorrect?

Do you see examples where "people" forget to remove them after 6 month 12 months time?

Somebody who have experienced that a temporary strainer has been sucked into a compressor or
pump?

No. 14, Layout process area

From your experiences, what are the 5 10 most often seen design mistakes in the layout of process
areas?

No. 15, Ventilation & combustion air intakes

Please discuss some of your specific installations:

How are air intakes for ventilation and combustion air arranged?

Do you see risks that a gas leak could reach such air intakes?
No. 16, Workshop facilities and store

Are two workshops (electrical + mechanical) sufficient?

What would the appropriate size be for the two workshops on a process installation with 30 50
POB?

What equipment & facilities should each of them contain?

No. 17, Maintenance access
In addition to the examples given in the lesson, please discuss other examples:

That we should take into consideration during the layout design?

That you experience we forget (again and again)?

No. 18, Fire pumps

Is it required that fire pumps located in unclassified area on an accommodation platform are enclosed
in firerated enclosures?

Discuss if it would be appropriate to do, if not directly required by regulations or standards

Have you experienced a fire pumps that fails to start on demand? Or have you heard about such
cases? Please give examples.

No. 19, Seawater lift pumps

Your experiences (or what you have heard) when it is required to "draw" a seawater lift pump:

Was there sufficient headroom on the cellar deck?

Was the lifting equipment "fit for purpose"?

Do you have ideas to better arrangements of the pumps and lifting equipment?
