The Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia's most well known and photographed landmarks.
It is the world's largest (but not the longest) steel arch bridge with the top of the bridge standing
134 metres above the harbour. It is fondly known by the locals as the 'Coathanger' because of its
arch-based design.

A History of the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Under the directions of Queenslander Dr J.J.C. Bradfield of the NSW Department of Public
Works, the bridge was designed and built by British firm Dorman Long and Co
Ltd of Middlesbrough and opened in 1932. The bridge's design was influenced by the Hell Gate
Bridge in New York. It is also the sixth longest spanning-arch bridge in the world, and it is the
tallest steel arch bridge.
It was as early as 1815 that Francis Greenway proposed building a bridge from the northern to
the southern shore of the harbour.
It took some time for this to become a reality with design submissions invited in 1900. All the
submissions were considered unsuitable and so the momentum for the bridge crossing stopped.
However, after the First World War more serious plans were made, with a general design for the
Sydney Harbour Bridge prepared by Dr J J C Bradfield and officers of the NSW Department of
Public Works. The New South Wales Government then invited worldwide tenders for the
construction of the Bridge in 1922 and the contract was let to English firm Dorman Long and Co
of Middlesbrough.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge construction started in 1924 and took 1,400 men eight years to build
at a cost of 4.2 million. Six million hand driven rivets and 53,000 tonnes of steel were used in its
construction. It now carries eight traffic lanes and two rail lines, one in each direction, but at the
time of its construction the two eastern lanes were tram tracks. They were converted to road
traffic when Sydney closed down its tram system in the 1950s.

McDonalds Logo
The McDonalds logo is widely regarded as one of the most popular and instantly recognizable
logos in history. It has become a mark of excellence and global supremacy. The emblem is
closely affiliated with American culture and has been even termed as part of Americanization
and American cultural imperialism.

Brief History:

The McDonalds logo comprises of the iconic Golden Arches that symbolize elegance,
dominance and professionalism. It was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler and the concept was
actually developed by Dick and Mac McDonald, who had placed arch shaped signs on the sides
of their then walk-up hamburger stand. Looking from a certain angle, those arches appeared
like the letter M. Hence, it was decided to incorporate them in the McDonalds logo, which
came out as a merger of the two golden arches together.

The McDonalds logo has proven itself to be an insignia of multinational business expansion.
Recognized directly with the US, McDonalds logo is also labeled as part of Americanization
and American cultural imperialism. Elegance, significance and solid corporate character are
clearly depicted by the golden arches of the McDonalds logo. Later in 1968, the name
McDonalds was adjoined with the McDonalds logo.

Although the physical arches were discarded from all the restaurants building design, the
Golden Arches have become the crucial element of their corporate logo, and have played an
instrumental role in branding the company. The arches are said to reverberate with mythic
symbolism, rendering the image of McDonalds restaurant as a paradise of cleanliness,
friendliness, self-discipline and cheerfulness.
Design Elements of McDonalds Logo:
The McDonalds logo is used worldwide to project the meaning intended by the company and
also to avoid tarnishing of the companys proposed picture. McDonalds logo encompasses the
durable characteristics of the food chain.
Shape of McDonalds Logo:

The two golden arches were initially designed to resemble the new arched shaped symbols on the
side of the newborn restaurant. Later, the designer of the McDonalds logo merged the two
arches to outline the famed M now identified globally. Hence, the McDonalds logo possesses
a simple golden colored M which reflects the name of the food chain.
Color of McDonalds Logo:
Two prominent shades, golden and red, are used in the McDonalds logo to represent its bold
nature. Golden hue is employed to color the two arches, now merged to form M in the
McDonalds logo. Nonetheless, the red color is utilized to fill the background of the
distinguished McDonalds logo. Boldness, power and strong corporate image are truly reflected
by the use of these two confident colors.
Font of McDonalds Logo:
In spite if the M on McDonalds logo, the insignia also grips the name of the food chain.
McDonalds has been imprinted in a thoroughly simple font which defines the bold picture of
the firm. The simpler the font of the logo, the more radiant it becomes for the spectator.

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel) is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars
in Paris. This iconic structure was named after its creator and designer, Gustave Eiffel with the
help of his company. It was built in 1887 and was completed in March 31, 1889 as the entrance
arch to 1889 World's Fair, it was intially critized by some of the France's leading and famous
artists but has become a global trademark of France and one of the most recognizable structure in
the world. The tower was made possible by its architect Stephen Sauvastre and the structural
engineers Maurice Koechlin and mile Nouguier. The tower was 324 meters (1063 feet tall)
same as height of 81-storey building. Because of the addition of the antenna atop it is nlw 17 feet
tall.
When the tower opened to public in May, 1889 it was an instant success with 1, 869, 000
visitors. Twenty years later, the lease for the land expired and Eiffel lost control to his tower in
the city of Paris. The land was too valuable for such a frivolous structure according to the city
council, and plans were made to turn the tower into scrap metal. Fortunately for the tower, the
First World War came along and the tower was turned into military radio and telegraph center. Its
lease was renewed for another 70 years and the tourists continue to flock to the structure.
Today the Eiffel Tower is a successful business affair. More and more tourists visit the Parisian
landmark marking its 250 millionth visitor last 2010. Last year more than 4.5 million people had
visited the tower and continues to increase as years go by. With its unique design it really is the
most paid monument in the world.
