Introduction
As computers play a larger role in our lives, energy demands,
and power waste are concerning dramatically.
Power consumption is causing serious problems because of
more generated heat.
The added heat from computers/components can increase the
cost of air conditioners for cooling solutions, it has significant
effects on the system performance and making your computing
equipment even more expensive to run.
The higher or maximum power dissipation needed more
expensive thermal management or cooling solutions. INTEL
estimates that more than 1$/W per processor chip will be added
once the processor power dissipation up to 35-40 Watts

Introduction
Green computing is the environmentally
responsible use of computers/systems and
related components . Such systems include the
implementation of energy-efficient central
processing units (CPUs), servers and units as
well as reduced all hardware energy
consumption.
So, Green Computing is the system
Power/Thermal aware computing

Introduction
The Computer Energy use comes
from:
- electrical current to run the CPU,
motherboard, memory, ..
- running the fan and running the
disk(s)
- Monitors
- Printers
computer energy is often wasteful
leaving the computer on when
not in use (CPU, Memory,
Motherboard, and fan consume
power, )

Aim of Green Computing

In order to achieve sustainable computing, we need
to rethink from a Green Computing standpoint,
because :
Green Computing:
* Maximize energy efficiency
** Reduce of the system falling percentages.
*** Minimize the total generated heat

What We Need .
Understand all levels of the computer/Systems
Understand where power is dissipated
Think about ways to reduce power usage at all levels
as well as the generated temperature.

Simple Steps to Be Taken Toward Green

Computing
Our computers SLEEP and HIBERNATE settings are two of
the most effective ways
to make our computer more
environmentally friendly.
SLEEP MODE
Sleep mode conserves energy by cutting off power to our
display, hard drive, and peripherals. After a pre-set period of
inactivity, our computer switches to a low power state. .
HIBERNATE MODE
Hibernate mode saves energy and protects our work by
copying system data to a reserved area on our hard drive and
then completely turning off our computer. It also reduces wear
on our components. When we turn power back on, our files
and documents appear on our desktop just as we left them.

Simple Steps to Be Taken Toward Green

Computing
Power-down the CPU and all peripherals during extended
periods of inactivity. (Power Gating)
Try to do computer-related tasks during active of time, leaving
hardware off at other times.
Power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals such
as printers according to need.
Use liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors instead of cathoderay-tube (CRT) monitors.
Use low power computers rather than high power or desktop
computers whenever possible.
Use the power-management features to turn off hard drives and
displays after several minutes of inactivity.

Green Technologies
green technology or clean technology is the
application of one or more of system units
and electronic devices to monitor, and
conserve both of the power and
temperature, and to minimize the negative
impacts of human environment.

Green Technologies
Power saving by D-link Green
When a computer or network equipment is shut down, switches
often remain on and continue to consume considerable amounts
of power. With D-Link Green Technology allows switches to
automatically detect link status and reduce power usage of ports
that are idle.
D-Link Green verified switches have the ability to analyze the
length of any Ethernet cable connected to them for adjustment of
power usage accordingly. Shorter lengths require less power.

Time based Power Over Ethernet

Time-based PoE optimization turns PoE on or off based on a
schedule to save power. When PoE devices are not in use
(i.e. during the night) PoE can be disabled until needed.

To summarize
Green computing is a novel and an innovative
trend of computing which has minimum impact
on the environment.
Green computing has introduced a range of
hardware units and technologies which help in
limiting the power/temperature.
Use of Energy bases in different aspects of the
computing technology help in recognizing the
areas for improvement.
