International Baccalaureate (IB) Recognises the ITC

ITC has been recognised by the IB as the first non-university pathway

to the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning. The IB Certificate is
designed to meet the needs of teachers with little or no IB
experience who want to strengthen their practical understanding of
curriculum as well as pedagogical and assessment issues related to
the implementation of the IB programmes. The ITC is a blended
standards-based 14-month online programme with a three day faceto-face institute designed to equip teachers with the global mind-set necessary for successful
teaching in the 21st Century. Teachers who enrol in the ITC and who are working in an
authorised IB programme (PYP, MYP or DP) OR in an IB candidate school (subject to IB
agreement) will be eligible, upon successful completion of the ITC and in accordance with
certain criteria, to apply for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning.
The ITC is the only non-university pathway that offers teachers the IB Certificate in Teaching
and Learning for the PYP, MYP or DP programmes.

The ITC and the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning- information
The International Baccalaureate (IB) has recognised the ITC as a pathway to the IB Certificate
in Teaching and Learning. The IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning is issued by the IB.
Teachers may apply for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning upon successful
completion of the ITC, but need to register after the ITC institute. ECIS provides additional
documentation that may be required by the IB to confirm your engagement with the IB
programmes, values and approaches through your work in the ITC. An additional one-off
registration fee will also be required when you apply for the IB Certificate in Teaching and
Learning.
In order to use the ITC as preparation for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning, the
following additional criteria must be met:
1. Work in an authorised IB Programme
The school you are working in during your ITC year must have the appropriate authorised IB
programme (PYP, MYP, and/or IBDP). It may be an IB candidate school for that programme
at the time you commence the ITC. The IB must be assured that you are working within the
proper IB context to enhance your understanding of the IB programme.
2. Choose an IB Programme
The IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning is specific to the IBPYP, IBMYP, or IBDP. Therefore,

you must decide which one you will apply for, and all of your ITC work must be done within
that section of the school. This means that special subject teachers, for example, who work
across the school must do all of the ITC work with their chosen area of the school (primary,
middle or diploma level).
3. Use the ITC to engage with the IB Essential Questions
ECIS provides an IB-approved guide to help identify those ITC moments when you can engage
with the IB Essential Questions.
4. Give ECIS permission to pass your details to the IB upon beginning the ITC. This is so the IB
can ensure that you have access to the IB Online Curriculum Centre. They will issue you with a
username and password.
5. Identify a mentor who is experienced with the IB programme you have selected. This must
be one of the following (in order of our preference!)
(a) your IB Coordinator
(b) an authorised IB Workshop Leader
(c) an authorised IB School Visitor/ authorised IB Consultant
(d) an authorised IB Reader
(d) your principal in an authorised IB Programme
6. Your ITC Standard 2 main activity (planning a 10 hour unit of study related to a global issue)
must be aligned to your IB programme teaching/subject area. This Standard will be assessed
by a Cambridge Examiner with IB experience.
7. You should make use of the IB OCC and other IB resources in addition to all of the
resources offered through the ITC.
Note: The IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning is granted by the IB, and not by ECIS or
Cambridge.
