Objectives:

to introduce the topic of the lesson: The degrees of comparison of adjectives

to develop the writing, reading and speaking skills of the students

students will be able to develop ideas and make comparisons and contrasts on given topics

Activity 1 Warm-up
Aim introducing the topic
Procedure: To get some practice using comparison/contrast, the teacher prepares the students to
write a comparison/contrast paragraph(s) based on one of the following topics (or come up with one
they like better):

High school and College

Raising a pet and raising a child

Two colleges you've considered attending

Two books you've read, or two movies you've seen

Two close friends

Two buildings
The teacher writes the topics on the blackboard and groups the students.

Activity 2
Aim: to practice the use of the comparatives
Procedure:
1. Once the students decide on their subject, the teacher asks them to establish categories to
focus their analysis.
For example, if they're comparing colleges, their categories might be curriculum, price, location,
and social life.
2. Then they brainstorm and decide upon several appropriate categories for their topic.

Activity 3
Aim: to make comparisons and contrasts
Procedure:
1. The teacher writes all the categories of all the topics on the blackboard
2. Based on the categories the students arrived at above, they write what is similar and what
is different about the two subjects on a sheet of paper.

Aim: - to assemble the students analysis
Procedure:
1. The students choose a spokesperson for each group.
2. The teacher asks the spokespersons to come in front of the classroom and present the

Aim: to develop writing skill
Procedure: 2. The teacher asks the students to compile their raw material into paragraphs.
3. The students write a topic sentence to focus their comparison/contrast.

Activity 6
Aim: to reinforce the students knowledge of the comparative degree
Procedure: The teacher gives students a worksheet with exercises regarding comparisons
