hockeyteambasedinBoston,Massachusetts.Theyare
membersoftheAtlanticDivisionoftheEastern
ConferenceoftheNationalHockeyLeague(NHL).The
teamhasbeeninexistencesince1924,andisthe
League'sthirdoldestteamandistheoldestintheUnited
States.ItisalsoanOriginalSixfranchise,alongwiththe
ChicagoBlackhawks,DetroitRedWings,Montreal
Canadiens,NewYorkRangersandTorontoMapleLeafs.
TheBruinshavewonsixStanleyCupchampionships,
tiedfifthmostofalltimewiththeBlackhawksandtied
secondmostofanyAmericanNHLteamalsowiththe
Blackhawks(behindtheRedWings,whohave11).Their
homearenaistheTDGarden,wheretheyhaveplayed
since1995.Priorto1995,theteamplayeditshome

withhockeywhilewatchingthe1924StanleyCupFinals

WCHLchampionCalgaryTigers.HepersuadedtheNHL
togranthimafranchiseforBoston,whichoccurredon

Adams'firstactwastohireArtRoss,aformerstarplayerandinnovator,as
generalmanager.Rosswasthefaceofthefranchiseforthenextthirtyyears,
includingfourseparatestintsascoach.
AdamsdirectedRosstocomeupwithanicknamethatwouldportrayan
untamedanimaldisplayingspeed,agility,andcunning.Rosscameupwith
"Bruins,"anOldEnglishwordusedforbrownbears(fromtheDutch
"bruin"meaningbrown)inclassicfolktales.Theteam'sbearlikenickname
alsowentalongwiththeteam'soriginaluniformcolorsofbrownand
yellow,whichcamefromAdams'grocerychain,FirstNationalStores.[2]
OnDecember1,1924,thenewBruinsteamplayedtheirfirstNHLgame
againsttheMaroons,atBostonArena,withtheBruinswinningthegameby
a21score.Buttheteamonlymanageda6240record(forlastplace)in
itsfirstseason.TheyplayedthreemoreseasonsattheArena,afterwhich

Arenawhentheuniversityrenovateditin1979.
Intheirthirdseason,192627,theteammarkedlyimproved.Rosstookadvantageofthecollapseofthe
WesternHockeyLeaguetopurchaseseveralwesternstars,includingtheteam'sfirstgreatstar,a
defensemanfromFortQu'Appelle,SaskatchewannamedEddieShore.TheBruinsreachedtheStanleyCup
Finaldespitefinishingonlyonegameabove.500,butlosttotheOttawaSenatorsinthefirstCupFinalto
bebetweenexclusivelyNHLteams.In1929theBruinsdefeatedtheNewYorkRangerstowintheirfirst
StanleyCup.StandoutplayersonthefirstchampionshipteamincludedShore,HarryOliver,DitClapper,
DutchGainorandgoaltenderTinyThompson.The192829seasonwasthefirstplayedatBostonGarden,
whichAdamshadbuiltafterguaranteeinghisbackers$500,000ingatereceiptsoverthenextfiveyears.
Theseasonafterthat,192930,theBruinspostedthebesteverregularseasonwinningpercentageinthe
NHL(anastonishing.875,winning38outof44games,arecordwhichstillstands)andshatterednumerous
teamscoringrecords,butlosttotheMontrealCanadiensintheCupFinal.
The1930sBruinsteamsincludedShore,Thompson,Clapper,BabeSiebertandCooneyWeiland.Theteam
ledtheleague'sstandingsfivetimesinthatdecade.In1939,theteamchangeditsuniformcolorsfrom
brownandyellowtothecurrentblackandgold,andcapturedthesecondStanleyCupinfranchisehistory.
Thatyear,ThompsonwastradedforrookiegoaltenderFrankBrimsek.Brimsekhadanawardwinning
season,capturingtheVezinaandCalderTrophies,becomingthefirstrookienamedtotheNHLFirstAll
StarTeam,andearningthenickname"Mr.Zero."TheteamskatinginfrontofBrimsekincludedBill
Cowley,Shore,Clapperand"SuddenDeath"MelHill(whoscoredthreeovertimegoalsinoneplayoff
series),togetherwiththe"KrautLine"ofcenterMiltSchmidt,rightwingerBobbyBauerandleftwinger
WoodyDumart.
In1940ShorewastradedtothestrugglingNewYorkAmericansforhisfinalNHLseason.In1941the
BruinswontheirthirdStanleyCupafterlosingonlyeightgamesandfinishingfirstintheregularseason.It
wastheirlastStanleyCupfor29years.

WorldWarIIandthe"OriginalSix"era
WorldWarIIaffectedtheBruinsmorethanmostteamsBrimsekandthe"Krauts"allenlistedafterthe
194041Cupwin,andlostthemostproductiveyearsoftheircareersatwar.Cowley,assistedbyveteran
playerClapperandBusherJackson,wastheteam'sremainingstar.EventhoughtheNHLhadby1943been
reducedtothesixteamsthatwouldinthemodernerabecalledthe"OriginalSix",talentwasdepleted
enoughthatfreakseasonscouldtakeplace,asin1944,whenBruinHerbCainwouldsetthethenNHL
recordforpointsinaseasonwith82.ButtheBruinsdidnotmaketheplayoffsthatseason,andCainwas
outoftheNHLtwoseasonslater.
Thestarsreturnedforthe194546season,andClapperledtheteambacktotheStanleyCupFinalas
playercoach.Heretiredasaplayerafterthenextseason,becomingthefirstplayertoplaytwentyNHL
seasons,butstayedonascoachfortwomoreyears.Brimsekprovedtobenotasgoodashewasbeforethe
war,andafter1946theBruinslostinthefirstplayoffroundthreestraightyears,resultinginClapper's
resignation.BrimsekwastradedtothelastplaceChicagoBlackHawksin1949,followedbythe

remainingqualityyoungplayerwhostayedwiththeteamforanylengthwasforwardJohnnyPeirson,
recognizabletofansofalatereraastheBruins'televisioncolorcommentatorinthe1970s.
Duringthe194849season,theoriginalformofthe"spokedB"logo,withasmallnumber"24"totheleft
ofthecapitalBsignifyingthecalendaryearinthe20thcenturyinwhichtheBruinsteamfirstplayed,anda
similarlysmall"49"totherightofthe"B,"forthethencurrentseason'scalendaryearinthe20thcentury,[4]
appearedontheirhomeuniformsanodtotheBostonarea'snicknameof"The
Hub".Thefollowingseason,thelogowasmodifiedintothebasic"spokedB"form
thatwastobeused,virtuallyunchanged(exceptforcertainproportionswithinthe
logo),throughthe199394season.

The1950sbeganwithCharlesAdams'sonWeston(whohadbeenteampresident
since1936)facingfinancialtrouble.Hewasforcedtoacceptabuyoutofferfrom
WalterA.Brown,theowneroftheNationalBasketballAssociation'sBoston
CelticsandtheGarden,in1951.Althoughthereweresomeinstancesofsuccess
(suchasmakingtheStanleyCupFinalin1953,1957and1958,onlytolosetothe
MontrealCanadienseachtime),theBruinsmusteredonlyfourwinningseasons
between1947and1967.Theymissedtheplayoffseightstraightyearsbetween
1960and1967.

In1954,onNewYear'sDay,RobertSkrak,anassistanttoFrankZamboni,the
inventorofthebestknowniceresurfacingmachineofthetime,demonstrateda
veryearlymodelofthemachineatBostonGardentotheteammanagement,andas
aresult,theBruinsorderedoneofthethenproduced"ModelE"resurfacerstobeusedattheGarden,the
firstknownNHLteamtoacquireoneofthesoontobeubiquitous"Zambonis"fortheirownuse.The
Bruins'ZamboniModelE,factoryserialnumber21usedaslateasthe1980sonanemergencybasis
eventuallyendedupintheHockeyHallofFameinTorontoin1988forpreservation.[5]
OnJanuary18,1958,amilestoneinNHLhistoryoccurredasthefirstblackpersonevertoplayintheNHL
steppedontotheicefortheBruins,NewBrunswickbornleftwingWillieO'Ree.Heplayedin45gamesfor
theBruinsoverthe195758and196061seasons,scoringsixgoalsandtenassistsinhisNHLcareer.
Duringthisperiod,thefarmsystemoftheBruinswasnotasexpansiveorwelldevelopedasmostofthe
otherfiveteams.TheBruinssoughtplayersnotprotectedbytheotherteams,andinlikefashiontothe
aforementionedsigningofWillieO'Ree,theteamsignedTommyWilliamsfromthe1960Olympicgold
medalwinningAmericannationalmen'shockeyteamatthetimetheonlyAmericanplayerintheNHL
in1962.The"UkeLine"namedfortheUkrainianheritageofJohnnyBucyk,VicStasiukandBronco
HorvathcametoBostonin1957andenjoyedfourproductiveoffensiveseasons,heralding,alongwith
scoringstalwartsDonMcKenneyandFlemingMacKell,thesuccessfuleraofthelate1950s.There
followedalonganddifficultreconstructionperiodintheearly,mid1960s.

ExpansionandtheBigBadBruins
WestonAdamsrepurchasedtheBruinsin1964afterBrown'sdeathandsetaboutrebuildingtheteam.
AdamssignedadefensemanfromParrySound,Ontario,namedBobbyOrr,whoenteredtheleaguein1966
andbecame,intheeyesofmany,thegreatestplayerofalltime.Hewasannouncedthatseason'swinnerof

theCalderMemorialTrophyforRookieoftheYearandnamedtotheSecondNHLAllStarTeam.When
askedaboutOrr'sNHLdebutgame,October19,1966,againsttheDetroitRedWings,thenBruinscoach
HarrySindenrecalled:
"Ourfanshadheardaboutthiskidforafewyearsnow.Therewasalotofpressureonhim,buthe
metalltheexpectations.Hewasastarfromthemomenttheyplayedthenationalantheminthe
openinggameoftheseason."
TheBruinsthenobtainedyoungforwardsPhilEsposito,KenHodgeandFredStanfieldfromChicagoina
dealthatwascelebratedasoneofthemostonesidedinhockeyhistory.HodgeandStanfieldbecamekey
elementsoftheBruins'success,andEsposito,whocenteredalinewithHodgeandWayneCashman,
becametheleague'stopgoalscorerandthefirstNHLplayertobreakthe100pointmark,settingmany
goalandpointscoringrecords.EspositoremainsoneoffourplayerstowintheArtRossTrophyfour
consecutiveseasons(theotherthreeareJaromirJagr,WayneGretzkyandGordieHowe).Withotherstars
likeforwardsBucyk,JohnMcKenzie,DerekSanderson,andHodge,steadydefenderslikeDallasSmithand
goaltenderGerryCheevers,the"BigBadBruins"becameoneoftheleague'stopteamsfromthelate1960s
intothe1980s.
In1970,a29yearStanleyCupdroughtcametoanendinBoston,
astheBruinsdefeatedtheSt.LouisBluesinfourgamesinthe
Final.Orrscoredthegamewinninggoalinovertimetoclinchthe
StanleyCup.ThesameseasonwasOrr'smostawardedthethird
ofeightconsecutiveyearshewontheJamesNorrisMemorial
TrophyasthetopdefensemanintheNHLandhewontheArt
RossTrophy,theConnSmytheTrophyandtheHartMemorial
Trophy,theonlyplayertoeverwinfourmajorawardsinthesame
season.

towinthe1970StanleyCupFinals.

The197071seasonwas,inretrospect,thehighwatermarkofthe1970sforBoston.WhileSinden
temporarilyretiredfromhockeytoenterbusiness(hewasreplacedbyexBruinandCanadiendefenseman
TomJohnson),theBruinssetdozensofoffensivescoringrecords:theyhadsevenoftheleague'stopten
scorersafeatnotachievedbeforeorsincesettherecordforwinsinaseason,andinaleaguethathad
neverseena100pointscorerbefore1969,theBruinshadfourthatyear.Allfour(Orr,Esposito,Bucykand
Hodge)werenamedFirstTeamAllStars,afeatmatchedintheexpansioneraonlybythe197677
Canadiens.BostonwerefavoredtorepeatasCupchampions,butranintoaroadblockintheplayoffs.Up
51atonepointingametwoofthequarterfinalsagainsttheCanadiens(androokiegoaltenderKen
Dryden),theBruinssquanderedtheleadtolose75.TheBruinsneverrecoveredandlosttheseriesin
sevengames.

WhiletheBruinswerenotquiteasdominantthenextseason(althoughonlythreepointsbehindthe1971
pace),EspositoandOrrwereonceagainonetwointhescoringstandings(followedbyBucykinninth
place)andtheyregainedtheStanleyCupbydefeatingtheNewYorkRangersinsixgamesintheFinals.
RangersbluelinerBradPark,whocamerunneruptoOrr's(then)fiveyearmonopolyontheNorrisTrophy,
said,"BobbyOrrwasdidn'tmakethedifference."
The197273seasonsawupheavalattheBruins.FormerheadcoachSindenbecamethegeneralmanager.
BruinsplayersGerryCheevers,DerekSandersonandJohnnyMcKenzielefttojointheupstartWorld
HockeyAssociation.[8]CoachTomJohnsonwasfired52gamesintotheseason,replacedbyBepGuidolin,
whohadoncecoachedOrr.TheAdamsfamily,whichhadownedtheteamsinceitsfoundinginthe1920s,
soldittoStorerBroadcasting.TheBruins'seasoncametoaprematureendinafirstroundlosstothe
Rangersinthe1973playoffs,losingEspositotoinjuryinthatfirstround.[9]
In1974,theBruinsregainedtheirfirstplacestandingintheregularseason,withthree100pointscorerson
theteam(Esposito,Orr,andHodge).Howevertheylostthe1974FinalinanupsettothePhiladelphia
Flyers.
DonCherrysteppedbehindthebenchasthenewcoachin197475.TheBruinsstockedthemselveswith
enforcersandgrinders,andremainedcompetitiveunderCherry'sreign,thesocalled"LunchPailA.C".,
behindplayerssuchasGreggSheppard,TerryO'Reilly,StanJonathan,andPeterMcNab.Thiswouldalso
turnouttobeOrr'sfinalfullseasonintheleague,beforehiskneeinjuriesworsened,aswellasthelasttime
thatOrrandEspositowouldfinish12inregularseasonscoring.TheBruinsplacedsecondintheAdams
Division,andlosttotheChicagoBlackHawksinthefirstroundofthe1975playoffs,losingabestofthree
series,twogamestoone.
ContinuingwithCherry'srebuildingoftheteam,theBruinstradedEspositoandCarolVadnaisforBrad
Park,JeanRatelleandJoeZanussitotheRangers.ThattradewasparticularlycontroversialforbothBruins
andRangersfans,asEspositowasoneofthemostpopularBruinsplayers(thoughitwasknownthathe
disagreedwithCherry'scoaching),whileParkandRatellewereRangersstalwarts.[10]However,Boston
endedupgettingthebetterofthetrade,asEspositoneverreachedhispreviousscoringhighswiththe
Rangers,whileRatellemaintainedhisskilllevelwiththeBruinsandwasahighscorerforseveralyears
more.Particularly,itwasParkwhoreemergedasoneoftheleague'sbestdefencemenandfilledthevoid
leftbyOrr,whohadbeensidelinedbysurgeryatthestartof197576andonlymanagedtoplaytengames
beforebeinginjuredandlostfortherestoftheseason.[11]TheBruinsmadethesemifinalsagain,losingto
theFlyers.
Asanimpendingfreeagent,contracttalkswithOrrandhisagentAlanEaglesonhadbeentumultuous
throughout197576.AlthoughinsurerswouldnotunderwriteOrranddoctorsadvisedthathecouldnot
playmuchlonger,theBruinsstillattemptedtoresignOrrandofferedhimafiveyeardealatUS$925,000,
or18.6percentownershipoftheclubin1980.However,Eaglesonturneddowntheofferwithoutinforming
Orr,insteadsigninghimtotheChicagoBlackHawksin1976Orrwasnevereffectivehavingonly
played26gamesinChicagoandretiredaftermanykneeoperationsin1979.
CheeversreturnedfromtheWHAin1977,andtheBruinsgotpasttheFlyersinthesemifinals,butthey
weresweptbytheCanadiensintheStanleyCupFinals.Thestoryrepeateditselfin1978withabalanced
attackthatsawBostonhaveelevenplayerswith20+goalseasons,stilltheNHLrecordastheBruins

The1979semifinalseriesagainsttheHabsprovedtobeCherry'sundoing.Inthedecidingseventhgame,
theBruins,upbyagoal,werecalledforhavingtoomanymenontheiceinthelatestagesofthethird
period.Montrealtiedthegameontheensuingpowerplayandwoninovertime.NeverpopularwithHarry
Sinden,bythentheBruins'generalmanager,Cherrywasdismissedasheadcoachbutwaslaterhiredinthe
samecapacitywiththeColoradoRockies.
AtMadisonSquareGardenonDecember23,1979,aNewYorkRangersfanstoleStanJonathan'sstick,
hittinghimwithitduringapostgamescrum.Whenotherfansgotinvolved,TerryO'Reillychargedintothe
standsfollowedbyhisteammates.Thegame'sTVcommentatorremarkedthat"they'regoingtopullthat
