TheCalgaryFlamesareaprofessionalicehockeyteam
basedinCalgary,Alberta,Canada.Theyaremembersof
thePacificDivisionoftheWesternConferenceofthe
NationalHockeyLeague(NHL).Theclubisthethird
majorprofessionalicehockeyteamtorepresentthecity
ofCalgary,followingtheCalgaryTigers(192127)and
CalgaryCowboys(197577).TheFlamesareoneoftwo
NHLfranchisesinAlberta,theotherbeingtheEdmonton
Oilers.Thecities'proximityhasledtoarivalryknownas
theBattleofAlberta.
Theteamwasfoundedin1972inAtlanta,Georgiaasthe
AtlantaFlamesuntilrelocatingtoCalgaryin1980.The
FlamesplayedtheirfirstthreeseasonsinCalgaryatthe
StampedeCorralbeforemovingintotheircurrenthome
arena,theScotiabankSaddledome(originallyknownas
theOlympicSaddledome),in1983.In198586,the
FlamesbecamethefirstCalgaryteamsincethe192324
TigerstocompetefortheStanleyCup.In198889,the
Flameswontheirfirstandonlychampionship.The
Flames'unexpectedruntothe2004StanleyCupFinals
gaverisetotheRedMile,andin2011theteamhosted
andwonthesecondHeritageClassicoutdoorgame.
TheFlameshavewontwoPresidents'Trophiesasthe
league'stopregularseasonteam,andhaveclaimedfive
divisionchampionships.Individually,JaromeIginlais
thefranchiseleaderingamesplayed,goals,andpoints,
andisatwotimewinneroftheMauriceRichardTrophy
astheleague'sleadinggoalscorer.MiikkaKiprusoffhas
themostwinsbyagoaltenderinaCalgaryFlames
uniform.NinepeopleassociatedwiththeFlameshave
beeninductedintotheHockeyHallofFame.

franchise(theCalgaryHitmen),aNationalLacrosse
Leaguefranchise(theCalgaryRoughnecks)andaCFL

Association(WHA).[1]InDecember1971,theNHLhastilygrantedateamtoLongIslandtheNewYork
IslanderstokeeptheWHA'sNewYorkRaidersoutofthebrandnewNassauVeteransMemorial
Coliseum.Needinganotherteamtobalancetheschedule,theNHLawardedateamtoanAtlantabased
groupthatownedtheNationalBasketballAssociation'sAtlantaHawks,headedbyprominentlocalreal
estatedeveloperTomCousins.[2]Cousinsnamedtheteamthe"Flames"afterthefireresultingfromthe
MarchtotheSeaintheAmericanCivilWarbyGeneralWilliamTecumsehSherman,inwhichAtlantawas
nearlydestroyed.TheyplayedhomegamesintheOmniColiseumindowntownAtlanta.[3]

CreightonandAlMacNeil,theFlamesmadetheplayoffsinsixof
eightseasonsinAtlanta.[4]Inmarkedcontrast,theirexpansion
cousins,theIslanders,wononly31gamesduringtheirfirsttwo
yearsintheleaguecombined.[5]Thisrelativesuccessdidnotcarry
overtotheplayoffs,however,astheFlameswononlytwopost
seasongamesduringtheirtimeinAtlanta.[6]
TomLysiakcelebrateswith
teammatesafteragoalagainstthe
ColoradoRockiesin1978
Despitetheonicesuccess,theAtlantaownershipwasneveron
soundfinancialfooting.LongtimegeneralmanagerCliffFletcher
saidyearslaterthatCousins'initialfinancialprojectionsforanNHL
teamdidnotaccountfortheWHAenteringthepicture.[7]The
Flameswerealsoapoordraw,andneversignedamajortelevision
contract.[3]
In1980,Cousinswasinconsiderablefinancialdifficultyandwas
forcedtoselltheFlamestostaveoffbankruptcy.Withfewserious
offersfromlocalgroups,hewasveryreceptivetoanofferfromCanadianentrepreneur(andformerOilers
owner)NelsonSkalbania.HewasfrontingagroupofCalgarybusinessmenthatincludedoilmagnates
HarleyHotchkiss,RalphT.Scurfield,NormanGreen,DocandByronSeaman,andformerCalgary
StampedersgreatNormanKwong.[3]AlastditchefforttokeeptheteaminAtlantafellshort,andCousins
soldtheteamtoSkalbaniaforUS$16million,arecordsalepriceforanNHLteamatthetime.[7]OnMay
21,1980,SkalbaniaannouncedthattheteamwouldmovetoCalgary.[8]HechosetoretaintheFlames
name,feelingitwouldbeagoodfitforanoiltownlikeCalgary,whiletheflaming"A"logowasreplaced
byaflaming"C".[9]Skalbaniasoldhisinterestin1981,andtheFlameshavebeenlocallyownedsince.[10]
19801985
UnliketheWHA'sCalgaryCowboys,whofoldedthreeyearsearlier,
theFlameswereimmediatelyembracedbythecityofCalgary.While
theCowboyscouldmanagetosellonly2,000seasonticketsintheir
finalcampaignof197677,theFlamessold10,000fullandhalf
seasonticketpackagesinthe7,000seatStampedeCorral.[11]
LedbyKentNilsson's49goal,131pointseason,theFlamesqualified
fortheplayoffsintheirfirstseasoninCalgarywitha392714record,
goodforthirdinthePatrickDivision.[12]Theteamfoundmuchgreater
TheFlamesmovedintothe
playoffsuccessinCalgarythanitdidinAtlanta,winningtheirfirsttwo
OlympicSaddledome(now
playoffseriesovertheChicagoBlackHawksandPhiladelphiaFlyers
ScotiabankSaddledome)in1983
beforebowingouttotheMinnesotaNorthStarsinthesemifinals.[13]
Thisearlysuccesswasnotsoonrepeated.Afteralosingrecordin
198182,FletcherjettisonedseveralholdoversfromtheAtlantadayswhocouldnotadjusttothehigher
pressurehockeyenvironmentandrebuilttheroster.[7][14]Overthenextthreeseasons,heputtogetheracore
ofplayersthatwouldremaintogetherthroughtheearly1990s.

Fletcher'seffortstomatchtheOilersledhimtodrawtalentfromareaspreviouslyneglectedbytheNHL.
TheFlameswereamongtheearliestteamstosignlargenumbersofU.S.collegeplayers,includingJoel
Otto,GarySuter,andColinPatterson.[15]FletcheralsosteppedupthesearchforEuropeanhockeytalent,
acquiringHakanLoobandotherkeyplayers.HewasamongthefirsttodraftplayersfromtheSoviet
Union,includingHCCSKAMoscowstarSergeiMakarovin1983,butSovietplayerswerenotreleasedto
Westernteamsuntil1989.[16]Still,theteamwassufficientlyimprovedtochallengetheOilers,who
requiredthemaximumsevengamestodefeattheFlamesenroutetotheir1984StanleyCup
Championship.[17]
In1983,theFlamesmovedintotheirnewhome,theOlympicSaddledome(nowknownastheScotiabank
Saddledome).LocatedonthegroundsoftheCalgaryExhibitionandStampede,theSaddledomewasbuilt
asavenueforthe1988WinterOlympics.InthreeseasonsintheCorral,theFlameslostonly32home
games.[8]TheSaddledomehostedthe37thNHLAllStarGamein1985,a64victorybytheWales
Conference.[18]
19851990
TheplayersacquiredbyFletchermaturedintooneofthestrongestteamsintheleagueduringthemid
1980sandearly1990s.From198485to199091,theFlamestallied90pointsineveryseasonbutone.[19]
However,theywereusuallyunabletotransformthatsuccessintoadeepplayoffrun,largelybecausethey
couldnotgetthebetteroftheirprovincialrivals,thepowerhouseOilers.AlthoughtheOilersandFlames
usuallyfinishedatornearthetopoftheCampbellConference,theNHL'splayoffstructureofthetime
madeitverylikelythattheFlameswouldmeettheOilersineitherthefirstorsecondround,ratherthanin
CampbellConferencefinals.[7]Thatsamestructuremadeitverylikelythattheothertwoplayoffqualifiers
intheSmytheDivisionwouldhavetogetpasttheFlamesorOilers(orboth)inordertomakeittothe
conferencefinals.[20]From1983until1990,eithertheOilersortheFlamesrepresentedtheCampbell
ConferenceintheStanleyCupFinals.[21]
By1986theFlameslandedforwardsDougRisebrough,LannyMcDonald,andDanQuinn,defencemanAl
MacInnis,andgoaltenderMikeVernon.FinishingsecondintheSmythewitha40319record(theonly
seasonfrom1984to1991inwhichtheydidnotfinishwith90ormorepoints),[12]theFlamessweptthe
WinnipegJetsinthefirstroundoftheplayoffs,[17]settingupashowdownwiththeOilers.Edmonton
finished30pointsaheadofCalgaryduringtheseason,andwasheavilyfavouredtowinathirdCupina
row.However,theFlamesupsettheOilersinsevengamestheonlytimethattheFlamesdefeatedthe
Oilersinaplayoffseriesduringthedecade.Theserieswinninggoalcamewhenanerrantclearingattempt
bySteveSmithricochetedoffgoaltenderGrantFuhr'slegandintohisownnet.[22]Thegoalremainsoneof
themostlegendaryblundersinhockeyhistory.[23][24][25]
Fromthere,theFlameswentontotheCampbellConferenceFinals,wheretheydefeatedtheSt.Louis
Bluesinanothersevengameseries.Thistime,Calgaryhadtosurviveascareofitsown,shakingoffthe
MondayNightMiracleattheSt.LouisArena.Trailingbyascoreof52with10minutestoplayinthe
thirdperiodofGame6,theBluesmountedafuriouscomebacktosendthecontestintoovertime,where
DougWickenheiserscoredtoforceadecidingseventhgame.[26]CalgarywouldwinGame7athome,21,
advancingintotheStanleyCupFinalsforthefirsttime.[17]TheFlamesprovedtobenomatchforthe

MontrealCanadiens,losingthechampionshipseriesinfivegames.MontrealrookiegoaltenderPatrickRoy
wasnearlyunbeatableinthelasttwogames,allowingonlyfourgoalsenroutetowinningtheConnSmythe
Trophy.
TheFlamesfolloweduptheirruntotheFinalswiththeirbestregularseasontothatpoint.Calgary's4631
3recordin198687wasgoodforthirdoverallintheNHL,behindtheOilersandPhiladelphiaFlyers.[27]
However,theFlameswereunabletoduplicatetheirplayoffsuccessofayearprior,losingtheirfirstround
matchupwiththeJetsinsixgames.Theseasonwasalsodifficultofftheice,as1986firstrounddraftpick
GeorgePelawawaskilledinacaraccidentpriortotheseason'sstart.[28]
TheFlamesrecordedtheirfirst100pointseasonin198788,earningthePresidents'Trophyforhavingthe
league'sbestrecordandendingtheOilers'sixyearreignatoptheSmytheDivisionintheprocess.[29]Joe
Nieuwendykbecamethesecondrookieinleaguehistorytoscore50+goals,earningtheCalderMemorial
Trophyasrookieoftheyear.[30]Lookingtobolsterthelineupforaplayoffrun,theFlamesdealtyoung
sniperBrettHull,alongwithSteveBozek,totheBluesforRobRamageandRickWamsleyonMarch7,

Thistime,theFlameswoninsixgames,thelastbeinga42victoryinMontrealonMay25,1989.[17]The
clinchingwinwasespeciallysignificantinthatitmarkedtheonlytimethatanopposingteamdefeatedthe

Trophyasplayoffsmostvaluableplayer,[35]whilelongtimecaptainLannyMcDonaldannouncedhis
retirement.[34]The1989StanleyCupwingaveFlamescoownerSoniaScurfield(Ralph'swidow)the
distinctionofbeingthefirst(andasof2013,only)Canadianwomantohavehernameengravedonthe
Cup.[36]ItalsomadeKwongoneofthefewtohavehisnameonboththeStanleyCupandtheGreyCup.
In1989,thanksinparttoCliffFletcher'sdiplomaticefforts,theSovietsgavepermissionforaselectgroup
ofSoviethockeyplayerstosignwithNHLteams.ThefirstoftheseplayerswasSergeiPryakhin.Although
PryakhinneverbecameanNHLregular,hisarrivalblazedatrailforthelargenumberofRussianplayers
whoenteredtheNHLbeginningin198990.[16]SergeiMakarovjoinedtheFlamesthatseasonand,though
alreadyinhisthirties,becamethefifthFlametowintheCalderMemorialTrophyastheleague'sRookieof
theYear.Theselectionwouldprovecontroversial,promptingtheleaguetoamendtherulestoexcludeany
playerovertheageof26fromfutureconsideration.Thatseason,theteamfelltwopointsshyoftheirthird
straightPresidents'Trophywith99points.Alsothatseason,theywontheirthirdstraightSmytheDivision
title.Intheplayoffs,theyweredethronedinsixgamesbytheLosAngelesKings.Theywouldnotwin
anotherplayoffseriesuntil2004oneofthelongestsuchdroughtsinNHLhistory.[37]
19912003
In1991,FletcherlefttheFlamestobecomethegeneralmanagerofthe
TorontoMapleLeafs.Hehadbeentheteam'sgeneralmanagersinceits
inceptionin1972.[38]HewassucceededinCalgarybyDougRisebrough,
andthetwoquicklycompletedatenplayermegatradethatsawdisgruntled
forwardDougGilmourdealttoTorontowithfourotherplayersforformer
50goalscorerGaryLeemanandfourothers.[31]Thetradetransformedboth
clubs.TheformerlyineptLeafsturnedintoacontenderalmostimmediately,
whileLeemanscoredonlyelevengoalsinaFlamesuniform.[39]Despitethe
blossomingofTheorenFleuryintoanNHLstar,theFlamesmissedthe
playoffsentirelyin1992,onlyayearafterfinishingwiththeirthird100
pointseasoninfranchisehistory.ItwasthefirsttimetheFlameshadmissed
theplayoffssince1975,whentheywerestillinAtlanta.Itwasalsoonlythe
thirdtimeoutoftheplayoffsinthefranchise's20yearhistory.[17]
Calgary'salternatelogo,
19982007
Calgaryreboundedtomaketheplayoffsforthenextfourseasons,includingtwoconsecutivedivisiontitles.
However,theywereknockedoutinthefirstroundoftheplayoffseachtime.The1994and1995Division
titlesledtoGame7overtimehomedefeatsintheopeningroundtotheCanucksandSanJoseSharks
respectively.Inthe199596season,NieuwendykwastradedtotheDallasStarsinadealthatacquired
JaromeIginla.IginlawouldmakehisFlamesdebutinthe1996postseasonduringwhichtheFlamesagain
lostinthefirstround,afourgamesweepbytheBlackhawks.In1997,onlytwoyearsafterwinningtheir
secondconsecutivedivisiontitle,theFlamesmissedtheplayoffsandwouldnotreturnforsevenyears.[17]
Thelowpointcameinthe199798season,inwhichtheFlamesfinishedwithonly67points,thesecond
lowestpointtotalinfranchisehistory(behindonlythe197273AtlantaFlames).[40]

Duringthistime,theFlamesfounditincreasinglydifficulttoretaintheirbestplayersassalariesescalated
whiletheCanadiandollarlostvalueagainsttheAmericandollar.[41]Calgaryhasalwaysbeenoneofthe
smallestmarketsintheleague(itiscurrentlythirdsmallest,behindonly
EdmontonandWinnipeg)andtheNHL'ssmallmarketCanadianteams
founditincreasinglydifficulttocompeteinthenewenvironment.[42]In
1999,forexample,theFlamestradedFleurytotheColoradoAvalanche
midwaythroughtheseason.[31]ThetradecameshortlyafterFleurybecame
thefranchise'salltimeleadingscorer.[43]Fleurywasduetobecomean
unrestrictedfreeagentattheendoftheseason,andtheFlamesdidnotwant
torisklosinghimwithoutgettinganythinginreturn.[44]
AstheFlamessankinthestandings,theirattendancealsosagged.Formost
oftheirfirst16yearsinCalgary,Flamesticketswereamongthetoughestto
TheperformanceofJarome
getintheNHL.However,by1999,attendancehadfallenoffsoseverely

thattheownersissuedanultimatum:buymoreseasonticketsortheteam
fewbrightspotsduringits
wouldjoinitsdepartedcounterpartsinWinnipegandQuebecCityin
sevenyearplayoffdrought
leavingfortheUnitedStates.Thefansrespondedbybuyingenoughseason
ticketstokeeptheFlamesinCalgaryforthe19992000season.[7]The
Flamesissuedanotherappealformoreseasonticketsinthesummerof2000.[45]Thecampaign,aimedat
increasingseasonticketsalesfromafranchiselowof8,700to14,000,provedsuccessful.[46]Theincreased
salesdidnothalttheFlames'financiallosses,however,astheteamestimateditlost$14.5millionbetween
2001and2003.[41]
OneofthefewbrightspotsinthisstretchwasIginla,whocapturedtheRocketRichardandArtRoss
Trophiesin200102asNHLgoalandpointscoringchampionafterscoring52goalsand96points.Iginla
againwontheRocketRichardTrophy,tiedwithRickNashandIlyaKovalchuk,with41goalsin2003
04.[47]AnotherbrightspotfortheteamduringthistimewasdefencemanRobynRegehrwhobecamethe
youngestnomineeeverfortheBillMastertonMemorialTrophy,whichrecognizesperseverance,
sportsmanshipanddedicationtohockey.Regehrhadsufferedtwobrokenlegsinacaraccidentthesummer
of1999,butrecoveredintimetoplay57gamesattheageof19.[48]
Duringthe200203season,theFlameshiredDarrylSutterastheteam'sheadcoach,replacingGreg
Gilbert,whowasfiredastheFlameslanguishedinlastplaceintheWesternConference.[49]Sutteralso
becametheteam'sgeneralmanagerfollowingtheseason,andiscreditedwithrevitalizingthefranchise.[50]
AmongSutter'sfirstmoveswastoacquiregoaltenderMiikkaKiprusoff,whomhehadpreviouslycoached
inSanJose,earlyinthe200304season.[51]KiprusoffrespondedbysettingamodernNHLrecordfor
lowestgoalsagainstaverageat1.69.[52]
20042010
Aftersevenconsecutiveseasonsofnotmakingtheplayoffs,theFlamesfinallyreturnedtothepostseason
in2004.Theybecamethefirstteaminleaguehistorytodefeatthreedivisionchampionsenrouteto
becomingthefirstCanadianteamtomakeittotheStanleyCupFinalssincetheCanucksin1994.[53]The
Flames'firstvictimwastheNorthwestDivisionchampionVancouverCanucks,whomtheydefeatedin
sevengames.ItwastheFlames'firstplayoffserieswinsincetheywonthe1989final.[54]

2004StanleyCupFinalstofacetheTampaBayLightning.MartinGelinas
scoredthewinninggoalinallthreeseries.TheCanadianEmbassyin
WashingtonDC,flewtheFlamesflagbesidetheMapleLeaf,[55]while
PrimeMinisterPaulMartindubbedtheFlames"Canada'steam".[56]
Thefinalserieswenttosevengames,withtheFlamessufferinga
controversialnongoalingamesixathome.ReplaysshowedthatMartin
Gelinasmayhavescoredwhatwouldhavebeenthegoaheadgoallatein
thethirdperiodhowever,therefereesneversignaledagoal,andlater
MiikkaKiprusoffwonthe
replayswereruledinconclusive.ThisgoalcouldhavemadeGelinasthe
VezinaTrophyastheNHL's
onlyplayerinNHLhistorytoscorethewinninggoalineveryplayoffseries
topgoaltenderin200506.

TheFlameswouldnotraisetheirWesternConferencechampionshipbannerfornearly15months,asthe
200405seasonwaswipedoutbyalabourdispute.Duringthelockout,teamownerandChairmanofthe
Board,HarleyHotchkiss,attemptedtosavetheseasonbyengagingindiscussionswithNationalHockey
LeaguePlayersAssociationpresidentTrevorLinden.[59]Whiletheirdiscussionsfailedtosavetheseason,

TheFlamesplayedtheir25thseasoninCalgaryin200506,finishingwith103points.Itwastheirbesttotal
sincethe1989Cupwinningseason,andgoodenoughtocapturetheirfirstdivisiontitlein12years.
However,theFlameslosttotheMightyDucksofAnaheiminsevengamesduringthefirstroundofthe
playoffs.MiikkaKiprusoffcapturedboththeWilliamM.JenningsandVezinaTrophiesastheNHL'stop
goaltender,[61]whileDionPhaneuf's20goalswasthethirdhighesttotalforarookiedefencemaninleague
history.[62]
The2006offseasonbeganwithatradeforAlexTanguay,formerlyoftheColoradoAvalanche,[63]and
withSutterrelinquishinghisheadcoachingpositiontoassistantJimPlayfairsohecouldfocusonhisduties
asgeneralmanager.[64]Despiteamarkedimprovementinteamoffenceandasolid96pointseason,itwas
onlygoodenoughforeighthplaceinaWesternConferencewhereseventeamscrackedthe100point

Communityimpact
In1994,theFlamesapproachedtheSaddledomeFoundationwithaproposaltorenovatetheOlympic
Saddledome,renameittheCanadianAirlinesSaddledomeandtakeovermanagementofthefacility.The
boardagreedtothisproposal,andwasboughtoutbytheFlamesfor$20millionastheteamsigneda20

TheFlameshavemaintainedanactivepresenceinthecommunitysincetheirarrivalinCalgary.Through
theteam'snonprofitcharity,theFlamesFoundation,theteamhasdonatedover$32milliontocauses
throughoutsouthernAlberta.[84]AlongwiththeRotaryClub,theFlamesarehelpingtofundthefirst
children'shospiceinAlberta,andoneofonlysixinNorthAmerica.[85]
TheFlamesarealsoclosepartnerswiththeAlbertaChildren'sHospitalandtheGordonTownsendSchool
housedwithin.AmongthemanyactivitiestheFlamesparticipatein,theWheelchairHockeyChallengewith
theTownsendTigershasremainedahighlypopulartraditionforboththeplayersandthechildreninvolved.
In2010,theTigersdefeatedtheFlamestomovetoaperfect270recordsincethechallengewasfirst

DuringtheFlames'runtotheStanleyCupFinalsof2004,thecityofCalgaryessentiallybecamethehostof
a"nonstopparty".The17thAvenueSWentertainmentdistrict,whichrunswestfromtheScotiaBank
Saddledome,sawasmanyas35,000fanspackthestreetsduringthefirstthreeroundsoftheplayoffs,[41]
