Module 1

Exploration

1. Offshore/Onshore

Offshore

Shallow
= 0-50 meters
Intermediate = 50-300 meters
Deep water = 300-3000 meters

Onshore
Inshore or
Near
shore

2. Upstream/Downstream

Upstream:

Downstream:

Offshore
Pipelines
Production
Exploration

Onshore
Refinery
Oil products
Fuel distribution

3. Oil Companies

State Oil companies

Petrovietnam

Majors
(integrated)

Independents
(<50.000 Barrels per day, only Upstream)

4. JOC
JOC = Joint Operating Company
A company under Vietnamese Law specially set up to explore one particular
block or development offshore Vietnam.

Block 15-01

23.25%

50%

Block 15-2/01

14.25%

5. Blocks
Vietnam

Block 6/94
Tuong Vi,
Pearl Energy

1. Exploration Permit
2. Production License

6. Seismic Survey
A Seismic survey is done for the
purpose of exploring the
subsurface for oil and/or natural
gas.

7. Basin
A naturally occurring depression or dome,
containing reservoirs that hold natural gas or
oil. An group of underground lakes.

Cuu Long Basin

8. Reservoir
A naturally occurring storage area,
characteristically a folded rock formation,
that traps and holds natural gas or oil. An
underground lake of oil and gas.

A Plankton and algae, proteins and the life

that's floating in the sea, as it dies, falls to
the bottom, and these organisms are going
to be the source of our oil and gas. When
they're buried with the accumulating
sediment and reach an adequate
temperature, something above 50 to 70C
they start to cook. This transformation, this
change, changes them into the liquid
hydrocarbons that move and migrate, will
become our oil and gas reservoir.

9. Jack-up Drill rig

60 meters and 90 meters
spuds, length of the legs
Shallow water

Costs:

Spuds

150.000 USD
Per/day
Spuds cans

10

10. Semi Submersible

Semi = half
Submerged = under water
Drill rigs and Construction
Vessels
Deep water (500 1500 m)

Costs:
400.000 USD Per/day

11

11. Drill Ship

Deep water (1500 m +)
Small drill ships for
soil testing

12

Application
8. Jack-up
9. Semi Submersible
10. Drill ship

13

12/13. Derrick/Drill floor

Drill floor and Doghouse with Drill

master

Derrick

Top drive drill

14

14. Drill string

Drill pipe connector

Roughnecks making
up connection on the
drill floor.
Drill bit

15

15. Conductors
(or Casings) Pipes that prevent the drill hole from
caving in and guide oil flow. It is the connection
for the well head

Casing can be driven in with an Hydraulic

hammer or drilled.

16

16. Directional Drilling

Multiple drill holes

Drill bit

17

17. BOP
BOP = Blow Out Preventer
Prevents uncontrolled release of high
pressure oil or gas after the reservoir has
been reached

Oil & Gas introduction Course for NonEngineers SEC

18

18. Blowout
Uncontrolled release of gas and oil after the
reservoir has been reached.

Oil & Gas introduction Course for NonEngineers SEC

19

19. Duster
A well drilled in which no Oil or Gas is found, only rock
dust

20. Wildcat
A well drilled on a location where nobody expects to find
oil. It is a high risk investment.
On a location far away, where the wild cats live.

20

21. Well
Drill hole that produces
Oil or Gas

Sub sea Well head or

Christmas tree

Well head platform

21

22. Steam injection

Well stimulation

50% more recovery

22

23. Barrel
42 US gallons (158.9873 liters, or 34.9723 Imperial
(UK) gallons

Oil price is expressed in USD per Barrel

23

24. Production rate

Number of Barrel per day from one well or
field. [BPD]

Crude Oil world production per day: Approximately 81

million BPD
Production Vietnam 2011: Approx. 330,000 BPD (0.4%)
Reserves 4.4 Billion barrels (3rd Asia)
