From a basement to international sales

Wagner Companies products made locally, sold globally

A company known for rails has its start in
a basement, and also produces a product
that plays off a day made famous on a legendary television comedy.
Wagner Companies is located at 10600
Brown Deer Road and employs approximately 150 people.
"Were a Milwaukee-based manufacturer,
(and) its a family business," Wagner
Companies Executive Vice President Tony
Leto said in a recent interview.
The official legal entity is R &_B Wagner,
Inc., and it is named after Robert and Barbara
Wagner, who are the children of company
founder Adolph Wagner. Robert and
Barbara Wagner are still with the company.
"We like manufacturing in Milwaukee,
and we enjoy doing that. We like producing
as much as we can rather than importing it,"
Leto said.
The companys Web site states that
Wagner "manufactures and stocks standard
products for metal fabricators and produces
custom products primarily for handrails."
The company is comprised of three divisions:_architectural catalog, architectural custom and Wagner Industrial.
"What people know us for is metal components for railings custom and stock," Leto
said.

The history of the Wagner family in the

metals industry dates back to 1850, when
Julius Wagner started a blacksmith shop in
Buffalo, NY. Wagner moved to Milwaukee in
1870 and started an iron shop.
What is now Wagner Companies began
to take shape in 1955 when Adolph Wagner
began working on products in his basement,
designing approximately 40 products, including two sizes of elbows, flanges and connectors.
"Today those forty-some products have
grown into 11,000 catalog items," the companys Web site states.
Leto explained that while Adolph
Wagner created the products, he didnt have
the manufacturing capacity, so he outsourced
the manufacturing to his designs. He eventually bought the company that made the parts,
Advance Stamping Co.
"The original designs are still with us. We
still make parts he designed in 1955,"_Leto
said.
Leto said the company has a very good
reputation for quality and has been in the
metal railing industry for a long time.
"We tend to maintain our quality and our
flexibility,"_he said.
Over the years the company purchased
other firms, which were joined into one firm in
2001, and Wagner Companies moved all its
operations into the Brown Deer Road facility
in 2002.

Leto explained that the process of creating railings involves bending and welding, but
how it is done has changed through
advances in technology in both the engineering and the equipment that is more programmable in terms of bending and laying out the
railings.
"Its basically bending and welding, its
just how you get more efficient doing it," Leto
said.
The company has an international reach,
selling products in the Canada, United
Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa. He
said that while the company will go to international trade shows, it will be there to support local distributors selling their products.
"Certain products we have are patented
and proprietary so we sell them all over the
world," Leto said.
In 2008, the company sought and
attained ISO_certification. Leto explained
that ISO is a system that certifies a company
has processes in place for maintaining quality
that are followed. He explained that Wagner
does business for contract metal manufacturers.
"We have a lot of bending equipment, lot
of welding (and) polishing. Rather than have
that equipment go idle, we provide services
for local companies who we do bending for
their commercial products. Usually when
youre dealing with large commercial companies who want specific products done, part of

their quality program is you need to have a

quality program," Leto said. "We became certified for our industrial customer base. If
youre ISO_certified, you follow procedures
in terms of maintaining your quality and you
measure what you do.While we did it for our
industrial customers, it has certainly improved
our processes and procedures for taking care
of all of our customers."
In addition to railing products, Wagner
also created a product based on an episode
of the television show "Seinfeld."
"Were the worlds largest supplier and
manufacturer of Festivus Poles," (registered
trademark),_Leto said.
Leto explained the company started to
develop that product in 2004 in response to
a New York Times article about how people
were celebrating Festivus seven years after
"Seinfeld" had ended. It was at that time the
company looked into selling Festivus Poles.
"Were not going to make a money, but
were going to have a lot of fun," Leto said,
recalling his conversation with Robert
Wagner. "He agreed, and we got into the
Festivus Pole business, and weve sold thousands of them since 2005."
Leto noted that Gov. Jim Doyle had a
Festivus pole from the company, which is now
in the state Historical Society Museum in
Madison.
"We still sell them, we have a lot of fun in
December," Leto said.

companies, compare them. Price should
be a consideration, but how you feel
about their customer service and their system should be the ultimate factor in your
decision. Once you have made your decision, its a good idea to run the company
through the Better Business Bureau. Make
sure they have an "A" or high rating and
a good record of resolving complaints.
You will need to sign a contract, and
as with all contracts, you should read the
fine print. Consider the length of the contract and make sure prices dont go up
after a certain length of time. Make sure
you also understand the specifics of
renewing or cancelling the contract.

Dear Dr. Winter, I need implants in my upper and lower
arches. I have had several consultations and opinions all over
the board! Some of the consults said I only needed 4 implants
for the upper and 4 for the lower and others have said I need
just two for the lower. I did tell them I wanted to be able to
have teeth that didnt come out and I dont have a lot of bone
in either arch. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jack J.
Dear Jack, there are several good questions here. I will try
and break them down and I encourage you and the readers to
read my articles on Upgradeable Dentistry and Advanced
Treatment
Planning
under
publications

articles about these very questions. I also outline in various
publications the differences between removable overdentures
and fixed implant bridges and show examples of each type of
implant treatment.
First of all, without a consultation and x-rays I cannot
comment on your specific situation. The number of implants
you require is dependent upon the quality and quantity of
your remaining bone, your budget and the type of prosthesis
you require. Whether the implant restoration should be
fixed or non-removable by the patient or whether it is
acceptable to remove the implant supported denture and take
it out at night is a personal decision and both have advantages
and disadvantages. Most people that lose their teeth want
fixed teeth. In addition, the patients health, medication(s)
and anatomy all play a role in deciding upon the ideal implant
restoration. It is important to note that sometimes we can start
with a removable implant denture due to budgetary
constraints and add implants over a year or two and Upgrade
to a fixed restoration or bridge when finances allow!
Next, we can discuss the number of required implants. In
the upper arch most people have already been wearing a
denture or partial and they have already undergone bone loss.
As bone is lost in the upper jaw the sinuses expand and in
order to place implants in this area there is a need to grow
the bone by doing a sinus grafting procedure and possibly a
block grafting procedure. This sinus augmentation is a
procedure that will allow implants of normal length to be
placed in the posterior upper jaw. A way to bypass this is a
zygomatic or long implant that is used in an all-on-four
procedure. This procedure will place 4 implants at angles that
are used to support a full arch of denture teeth or a hybrid
prosthesis. This may be a predictable procedure but replacing
14 teeth (24 roots) with 4 implants doesnt provide as large a
margin of safety as using 7-9 implants per arch. This is a
matter of philosophy and the treating implant dentist and
surgeon will be able to explain their philosophy based upon

their education, skill and judgment.

As far as the two-implant option given to you for your
lower arch, this is strictly to support a lower overdenture,
which is removable. In order to have a fixed restoration
(non-removable) you would require a minimum of 6
maxillary and 5 mandibular implants in my practice. That
being said if you are able to place more implants and overengineer the situation you are always better off, as these
extra implants will redistribute chewing forces over 6-9
implants, instead of just four.

Red Cross Survey Finds 61% of Children Cant Perform Basic Swim Safety Skills
As part of a national campaign to reduce
the drowning rate by 50 percent over the
next three to five years, the Red Cross
released national survey data that shows that
most children and teens cannot perform
basic swimming safety skills.
The survey, conducted for the Red Cross,
found that nearly all parents (94 percent)
expect that their children will engage in
some sort of water activity this summer.
However, nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of
parents report their child cannot demonstrate
all five basic skills that could save their lives
in the water. Of these, 65 percent are parents of children (ages 4-12) and 51 percent

are parents of teens (ages 13-17).

These critical water safety skills, also
known as "water competency," are the ability to, in this order: step or jump into the water
over your head; return to the surface and
float or tread water for one minute; turn
around in a full circle and find an exit; swim
25 yards to the exit; and exit from the water.
If in a pool, be able to exit without using the
ladder.
"We're asking every family to make sure
that both adults and children, throughout
Wisconsin, make water safety a priority this
summer," stated Patty Flowers, Regional
CEO.

Every day, an average of 10 people die

in the U.S. from unintentional drowning
and 1 in 5 of them are children 14 or
younger, according to statistics from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In Wisconsin, weve heard of six people
drowning within the past two weekends.
Drowning is the second leading cause of
unintentional death for children and fifth for
people of all ages. In addition, for every
child who dies from drowning, another five
receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
Other key survey findings are:
Nearly a fifth (18 percent) of adults

who are not able to perform all five water

safety skills expect to supervise a child near
water this summer.
Fear is listed as the top reason for not
learning how to swim both as a child and as
an adult.
Nearly half of Americans (46 percent)
report that they have had an experience
where they were afraid they might drown.
Near-drowning experiences are more
common among young adults (ages 18-24).
And younger Americans are also more likely
than those in any other age group to report
that they know someone who nearly
drowned (36 percent).

full-time position. We are offering 40 hours per week with Friday
