Introduction
Global system for mobile communication (GSM) is a globally accepted standard for digital cellular
communication. GSM is the name of a standardization group established in 1982 to create a common
European mobile telephone standard that would formulate specifications for a pan-European mobile
cellular radio system operating at 900 MHz. It is estimated that many countries outside of Europe will
join the GSM partnership. [1]
As the GSM is the communication device, so the communication takes place by sending messages from
transmitter side and receive that message on the receiver side. The GSM modem consists of a slot for
inserting subscriber identity module (SIM). [2]This module has a unique number for each subscriber
through which they can communicate.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that was developed by the
U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in the early 1970s. Initially, GPS was developed as a military system
to fulfill the U.S military needs. However, it was later made available to civilians, and is now a dual-use
system that can be accessed by both military and civilians. [3]
GPS provides continuous positioning and timing information, anywhere in the world under any weather
conditions. Because it serves an unlimited number of users as well as being used for security reasons,
GPS is a one-way-ranging system. That is, users can only receive the satellite signals. [4]
Now by using the above two devices we are going to design a wireless patient monitoring system. In this
project we monitor the heartbeat and body temperature of the patient for which two sensors will be used.
These sensor senses the heartbeat and body temperature of the patient and sends their output signal to the
Arduino. Arduino calculates the heartbeat and temperature value as per loaded program and display on
LCD. By the help of GSM modem that the value of heartbeat and body temperature will sent to the doctor
for either regular treatment or in an emergency. Through GPS the location of the patient traces and
through GSM the coordinates of that location are also sent to the doctor in order to trace the exact
location of the patient for best and on time treatment in an emergency case.

Problem statement
One of the main problems is that patients are not getting on-time medical care. As a result, the death ratio
has been increased a lot. Also, the number of patients has been increased so much that they are not getting
better treatment from the doctors due to shortage in time.
In addition, some time the patient got heart problem at the place where there is no body with them and
also far away from the hospital which will cause the death

Motivation
As we face a lot of medical related problems. In order to reduce errors in the clinical data of a heart
patient and to decrease workload of a heart doctor, and also reduce the number of deaths, an automation
based monitoring system is in focus to be designed that will measure the heartbeat authentically. The
2

doctor will be informed immediately through an SMS, in case of any fluctuation in the heartbeat ratio of
the patient and also the doctor trace the location of the patient. No manual interference in the system will
lead the patient to get accurate treatment as the information about his/her disease will be error-free. Also,
no need of continuous manual monitoring will help the doctor to cope up with his/her physical and mental
stress

Objectives
Study about heartbeat sensors.
Interfacing GSM with Arduino.
Interfacing GPS with Arduino.
Designing of hardware, to calculate the patients heartbeat and temperature value.
Designing of hardware, to send the heartbeat value and patients location co-ordinates to doctor
mobile number.

Literature review
Early models consisted of a monitoring box with a set of electrode leads which attached to the chest. The
first wireless Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) heart rate monitor was invented in 1977 as a training
aid for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski team and as 'intensity training' became a popular concept
in athletic circles in the mid-80s, retail sales of wireless personal heart monitors started from 1983. [5]
Force sensitive resistance based heartbeat monitoring for health care system has been designed. In which
the monitoring unit has been designed as a wearable device. The monitoring unit monitors the heartbeat
and if it crosses the threshold level it creates an alarm to indicate that the patients heart rate is abnormal.
The monitoring unit will have a digital display to show the heart rate of the patient. [6]

Procedure
As the project monitors the patient's heartbeat and body temperature. First the heartbeat sensor will sense
the patient heart beat rate and after that the temperature sensor will sense the body temperature. As the
heartbeat sensor and temperature has three pins, the output signal pin of each sensor will connect to the
Arduino input pins. The Arduino will get the output signal of heartbeat and temperature sensor, after
applying a calculation that we have programmed it, Arduino calculates the exact value of heartbeat and
body temperature.
The calculated heartbeat and temperature value will then display on the LCD and through GSM modem
these values will be sent to the doctor mobile number. By using GPS the co-ordinates (longitude and
latitude) of the patient location also send for the doctor, through which the doctor traces the location of
the patient by using the special application. In this way the patient heart beat, body temperature value and
location is sent to the doctor. By getting these two informations about the patient, the doctors are able to
3

provide good and on time treatment to the patient in order to save the life and reduce the number of
deaths. This system will be best for the emergency case and also can be used for regular treatment.
