workshopsandseminars.WithintheDivisionofEngineeringtheexistingLEIADistance
LearningprovisioninLiftTechnologyhasgivenmanyyearsofexperienceoperatingwith
studentsinthisindustry,placingtheSchoolinastrongpositiontoextendthatprovisionto
postgraduatelevel.
TheCourse
Thetaught,modular,distancelearningcourseleadstotheawardofMScinLift
Engineering,validatedandawardedbytheUniversityofNorthampton.Thecourseaimsto
provideadetailed,academicstudyofliftengineeringandrelatedmanagementissues,
togetherwithahigherlevelqualificationforpersonsemployedintheliftmakingand
alliedindustries.Entryisnormallyfromanengineeringorsimilarfirstdegree.However,to
alignwiththeessentialneedsoftheindustry,considerationisalsogiventothosewhocan
demonstraterelevantlearningandexperienceatanappropriatelevel.Exemptionfromthe
degreequalificationmaybegiventhroughAccreditationofPriorLearning(APL)and/or
AccreditationofPriorExperientialLearning(APEL).DetailsaregivenbelowinEntry
Requirements
Thecourseiscomposedofcompulsoryandelectivetaughtmodules,plusanindependent,
industrybasedresearchstudypresentedintheformofadissertation.Compulsorymodules
willbeconcernedwithApplicationsEngineering,CodesandStandardsandContract
Management,allofwhichareconsideredtobeessential.Electivemoduleswillprovide
studentswiththeopportunitytopursuetheirownparticularspecialisationwithinthe
industry.
CourseStructure
ItisexpectedthatstudentswillnormallyrequireatleastthreeyearstocompletetheMSc,
althoughstudentswillbeabletonegotiatetheirownpaceofstudy,eithershorterorlonger.
Anumberofstudentshavechosenadifferentpatternofstudy,completingonlytwotaught

Thedissertation,baseduponaprofessionalpracticeproject,willcountasa'triple'module.
Thedissertationmodulewillbecarriedoutwithinthestudent'scompany.Itwillconsistof
designorinvestigativeresearchinanappropriatetopicrelatedtothecoursematerialand
objectives,proposedbythestudentandnegotiatedwiththecourseteam.Examplesof
topicswhichmightbeconsideredsuitableare:
Technicalandcommercialordesignsupervisionofasignificantvertical
transportationproject
Implementationofasuitableinformationtechnologyprojectwithinaserviceor
commercialorganisation
Inordertosucceedinthemodule,itwouldnotbesufficientsimplytorecordsucha
project.Thedemandsoftheawardwillrequirethatthebackgroundtotheprojectis
properlyandcomprehensivelyresearchedinanacademiccontext.

Individualelectivemoduleswilleachbesubjecttoafinalassessmentbyexamination.
Dissertation

Thedissertationmoduleisassessedthroughthedissertation,andisnormallysubjectalso
toa'VivaVoce'(oral)examination.Foroverseasstudents,thislattermaybecarriedout
throughvideoconferencing.

Owingtotheextensiverangeofacademicqualificationsavailableworldwide,entry
requirementsaredescribedhereintermsofUKacademicawards.Applicantsfromoutside
UKshouldsubmitevidenceoftheirownqualifications.TheAcademicRegistryatthe
UniversitywillthenestablishtheequivalenceofthosequalificationsintheUKcontext.
Applicantswithafirstdegreewillnormallybeexpectedtohaveattainedhonoursatleast
class2.2(oritsequivalent)inarelevantengineeringorassociatedtechnicaldiscipline.
WithintheframeworkoftheUniversityandFacultyprocessesforAccreditationofPrior
Learning/PriorExperientialLearning(APL/APEL),candidateswhocandemonstratean
appropriatelevelofrelevantlearningandachievementwillbeconsidered.Such
