MoorArts has TALENT, a showcase of exceptional entertainment, featuring a variety of
vocal, dance and instrumental
performances. The performances
will be held on Friday, July 10 at 8
p.m. and Saturday, July 11 at 2
p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Moorestown
High School auditorium, with an
ASL interpretation and special
needs accommodation performance at the Saturday matinee.
Tickets are $10 before and $12 at
the door with reserved seating.
Proceeds will go to local scholarships and teacher grants.
Our goal is to expose the community as much as possible to the
wealth of the art in our community and outside to get them a
broader art experience. MoorArts
has TALENT is a little way for us
to showcase the talent of these
people who have performed in
our productions, said Candace
Coleman, a MoorArts communication trustee.
MoorArts, often mistaken for a
theater company, is a non-profit
organization started more than
two decades ago that provides
unique artistic entertainment

and educational opportunities for

Moorestown citizens in all areas
of the arts. Living up to its tagline
inspiring creativity and its mission, MoorArts is an advocate for
arts education systemwide. It believes education in the arts
should be regarded as a necessity,
not a luxury.
Year round, it provides a wide
variety of events and opportunities to experience the arts. It offers entertainment, concerts,
workshops and classes for
Moorestown residents, young and
old. It also partners up with local
organizations such as the Department of Parks and Recreation
and Moorestown Township Public Schools in these ventures.
I think it is amazing. I was
considering this yesterday: if
they werent here, who would
offer these cultural experiences?
They dont provide just entertainment, they offer social services
and opportunities for people of
all ages and all abilities, said
Joseph Thomas, MoorArts has
TALENT production manager.
Instead of its usual summer
theater production, MoorArts decided to change things up a bit
and show off the talent the youth

A president from New Jersey?

Chris Christie is officially a candidate, and he could be a good one

hat was possibly the worstkept secret in New Jersey

politics was finally revealed
last week: Gov. Christie will officially
be running for president of the United
States in 2016.
Christie threw his hat into the ring
last week, and now hell have to contend with the apparent 1 million other
people running for the Republican
nomination notable among them
Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry,
Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and
Scott Walker.
Christies prospects of winning the
Republican nomination are considerably lower than they were back in 2012,
when he decided to not run for the ticket that was heads-up with Barack
Obamas re-election campaign. However, despite this and whether you
think hed make a good president
Christie will probably make a strong
candidate.
In 2009, Christie won the gubernatorial election over incumbent Jon

Corzine. He collected 48.5 percent of

the vote that year, the largest margin
for a first-term Republican in New Jersey since 1969.
Four years later, he overwhelmingly
won re-election over Barbara Buono
and other challengers with 60 percent
of the vote.
Today, after a few scandals, his approval rating has dipped significantly,
and other strong Republican rivals
have entered the race as well.
But that doesnt mean he cant turn
things around, and make Republican
voters forget or overlook his deficiencies.
Christie has always thrived during
campaigns, and he has always done
well with all voters, regardless of polit-

ical party affiliation. That has long

been his attraction as a potential Republican candidate for presidency. In
his nomination speech, he already
blasted both parties, saying Republicans and Democrats alike have failed
our country.
Could that be enough by itself to
make Republican voters throw their
support behind him, instead of Bush
and the others?
Could he overcome recent negative
press received with the pension fight
and the bridge scandal by focusing on
his accomplishments and plans for our
country?
Maybe. It wouldnt be the first time it
happened.
The next few months of electioneering should prove interesting before the
first primaries are held in February.
Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Woodrow Wilson winning reelection as president. He was the last
candidate from New Jersey to win.
Could Christie be the next?

Special Recovery Worship Service planned for July 12

The
First
Baptist
Church
of
Moorestown will be holding a Recovery
Worship Service on July 12 at 10 a.m. The
service is open to everyone, and especially
to those struggling with or impacted by addictions.
"This service gives those in the recovery
community a chance to worship in a welcoming, safe space," said Rev. Linda Pepe,
pastor of FBCM. "Our church building is
home to various 12 Step Recovery and support groups throughout the week; and
those groups refer in their literature and
practice to a 'Higher Power.' Our aim is to

offer the people in those same communities a space to worship God that is judgment-free.
There are many people who haven't
been to a church in years, for a variety of
reasons; from the church not being accepting of their illness, to shame, to fear," Pepe
said. "But when it comes right down to it,
we all struggle with something. All of us
are addicted to one thing or another,
whether its substance abuse; or being addicted to food, TV, working, shopping or
gaming we can even be addicted to our
own ego. The recovery service gives all of

us a chance to come as we are, to encourage one another, and to enjoy the love and
forgiveness of the one who accepts us unconditionally no strings attached."
Future Recovery Worship Services in
2015 will be held on Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11,
Nov. 8 and Dec. 13.
First Baptist Church of Moorestown is
located at 19 West Main St.

dents with athletic outlets.
Additional relationships with
local non-profits has also allowed
for greater collaboration and
more opportunities for residents.
The department collaborates
with MoorArts for a wide variety
of arts programs and activities
that touch every member of the
community. From MoorMotion
and sponsoring the District Art
Show to the Holiday Arts Festival, Moor Arts creates arts opportunities for the community. The
Friends Enrichment Program, a
local non-profit with Quaker
roots and traditions, supplies
scholarships for local youth to attend summer camp programs and
other
recreation
programs
throughout the year. Founded by
local Quaker, Monique Begg, this
program offers tremendous opportunities not just to youth but
to their families as well.
A partnership established with
local non-profit, Live Civilly in
2012 offers nutritional and educational assistance to local, underserved youth in Moorestown.
Daily after-school, healthy snacks
at the Recreation Open Gym program and Live Civilly Homework
Help twice each week operate in
the Church Street Recreation
Center. This partnership also
provides daily lunches to scholarship camp-goers each summer.
Local partner Sean Fischel
Connect donates funds raised
from its annual run to provide a
variety of services to the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Most recently, their generous donation to the summer Special
Needs Camp has made the expansion of the camp possible. This
expansion is especially important
as many of the special needs students were aging out of the
original program. Additionally,

SFC provides Youth Soccer Team

Shirts and WIFI to the Recreation
Center so that visitors may access
the Internet and teens can enjoy
the Third Floor Community
Room.
MooreKids, assists the Recreation Department through the
provision of scholarships for
local youth to participate in activities from Summer Parks Programs to Special Needs Support
Outings. The partnership with
MooreKids has allowed the local
special needs population the opportunity to build relationships
through fun, family friendly
sports outings.
Newer, youth-driven organizations such as The Perfect Game
and Moorestown Youth Outreach
Association provide local services as well. The Perfect Game provides gently used sports equipment to families needing items
like soccer cleats, baseball bats
and hockey sticks. The MYOA
volunteers on the Third Floor of
the Recreation Center to provide
the Chillin at the Rec program
during summer months to give
area youth a safe and supervised
place to recreate with peers.
Over the last several years, the
Moorestown Education Foundation have supported the department with a grant to assist the
special needs summer program.
This allows for children and teens
ages 5 through 18 years enjoy
many wonderful field trips and
special events.
So as you mull over all of the
opportunities and partnerships
provided to the Moorestown Community, help us celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month.
Attend a concert, sign up for a
program or volunteer with one of
the organizations that helps to
make these opportunities possible. For more information please

of Moorestown has to offer with

MoorArts has TALENT.
I think it is exciting there is
this opportunity for performing
artists to perform apart from a
play or musical. It gives more
freedom for someones artistic vision to come out, Thomas said.
For the show, there are 16 performers with a plethora of talent.
There are singers, dancers and instrumentalists in a variety of
genres. They are, in order of appearance: Christopher Robinson,
Carrie Wagner, Zach Taylor, Bridget Hartshorne, Sophie Agnew,
Caroline Kienzle, Olivia Saouaf,
Gwen Wilkie, Danny McGilloway,
Alexandra Celluzi, Alyssa Caffrey, Olivia Manlove, Madeline
Yankel, Nahdira Lawrence, Faith
McCleery and Sarah Zimmer.
We wanted to offer a variety.
This is an opportunity to spotlight and perform what they
want. We gave them a lot of
choice and worked with them to
shape
their
performances
through rehearsals, Thomas
said.
Emcees for MoorArts has TALENT are Mayor Victoria Napoli-

tano and Moorestown Community House Executive Director Brad

Kenney, both of whom have participated in previous performances with MoorArts.
MoorArts has TALENT production leaders Thomas, vocal director Katie Carpenter and assistant production manager Tommy
Kienzle all took part in MoorArts
productions and events, and came
back to volunteer and give back to
the organization that gave them
so much.
It is really great they came
back. Theyre all talented and
give different strengths to the production. The younger kids really
look up to them. It is just a great
cycle, Coleman said.
As it is MoorArts goal to bring
the arts to everyone, it is sure to
include ALS and special needs individuals as well. At every production, it tries to include at least
one ALS and special needs accommodating show, including
this Saturdays matinee.
It is something we consciously try to do. We try to accommodate ALS and special needs individuals at least at one of all our
performances. It is important we
bring arts to everyone and provide experience for every population, Coleman said.
Coleman and Thomas hope

everyone comes out to the show to

see the talent the community has
to offer. The performance provides excellent and unique entertainment that attendees wouldnt
normally see.
All proceeds for the event, and
all MoorArts events, go to scholarships and teacher grants that
allow for teachers in the arts to
bring concepts and outside experts to kids it normally wouldnt
be able to do without the funding.
Scholarships are for students who
pursue the arts in a variety of
ways, not just music or theater.
The shows are reserved seating, and you save $2 by ordering
in advance. Order tickets by going
online at www.MoorArts.org or
by calling ShowTix4U toll free at
(800) 967-8167.
When they buy a ticket,
theyll be supporting the arts in
Moorestown and bringing more
arts to the younger population.
They will be entertained, but
their money will go toward something really special, committing
to broadening the arts in the community. Once they buy it, they are
a part of it, Coleman said.

Student: Nepal needs our help

STUDENT
Continued from page 3
With so much news to cover,
events like the earthquakes in
Nepal are slowly covered less and
less. Too soon after, we forget
there are people still in great
need. They (the third-graders)
wanted to share this story, so kids
like them would help and Nepal

would not be forgotten, Morken

said.
The third graders took the initiative and started a fundraising
project for Nepal with the goal of
raising $360. Within four weeks,
the class surpassed its goal by
leaps and bounds, earning
$3,000.01.
The moment Morken heard
about the Nepal earthquake, she
thought of her students. She decided to put it into the curricu-

lum to help teach them about current events and empathy, and gain
career and life skills. She felt certain her students would be motivated to do something by hearing
this news.
Children are capable of doing
great things if they are given the
right information and tools. I
hoped that by teaching them
about Nepal, they would feel compelled to do something to help,
and in doing so learn invaluable
life lessons, Morken said.
After reading a moving article
about the earthquakes in TIME
for Kids, the class was inspired
to do a fundraising project for
Nepal. The children were energized from the start, setting a goal
of $360 to be raised in only four
weeks.
Nepal desperately needs our
help because a lot of peoples
homes crashed, and they need
food and water, third grader Sydney Parks said.
As a class, the students brainstormed fundraising ideas, which
included doing extra chores
around the house, walking neighbors dogs, washing cars and having lemonade and snack stands.
Then, the students set to work,
planning with one another on the
bus and playground and around
dinner tables with their families.
I loved the idea of the class
wanting to raise money for the
Nepal victims. My daughter
Megan came home from school so
excited to tell me what they were
doing to raise money. Many of
the children worked together as a
team and had a fun time in the
process, said parent Colleen Leo,
whose daughter had a lemonade/snack stand that raised $360.
I baked and sold baked goods
for my family, friends and neighbors. Some of my products were
cookies, blondies and brownies. I
made about $600! It made me feel
really good that I could help the
people suffering in Nepal, third
grader Zoe Yurkewicz said.
After the fundraisers were
completed, the students sent photographs and videos to Morken,
which were shared with the class.
They gleaned ideas from one anplease see CLASS, page 19

CLASS

other about how best to market
their events and price their items,
learning important career skills
along the way.
Many career readiness skills
are taught and reinforced
through fundraising if children
are given the chance to lead and
be hands-on throughout the entire process. They learned how to
find the best locations for
fundraising, effective marketing
and the importance of looking
their customers in the eyes,
thanking them and teaching
them about their cause, Morken
said.
This activity was different
than activities we do with text-

books and worksheets, because

we didnt just learn what happened or how someone else
helped. We did something to
help, student Jacob Tom said.
When the children raised
more than expected, I was ecstatic, but not at all surprised. This
class demonstrated creativity and
hard work from the very first day
of school. They supported one another the entire way and tackled
this project with abounding energy, Morken said.
I enjoyed that we had to work
for the money for Nepal. It was
worth it, said Mark DiMarino.
Morken said she couldnt have
done the project without the support of the parents; they knew
when to help their children and
when to step back. Colleen said
Morken is a great teacher and
should be recognized for the suc-

cess of the fundraiser. Both commended the students and everyone who donated.
It was great to see how much
people care and were eager to
help with this positive cause,
Colleen said.
According to Morken, the students wanted to share their story
and get the word out about the
earthquake. As much as they
helped, they want others to learn
more and help, too.
If someone said, Nepal must
be doing fine. I dont see anything
about it on the news, I would say,
Even though it is not on the
news, they still need a lot of
help, Megan Leo said.
I think other kids should help,
because it is going to take a lot,
not just one person to heal
Nepal, student Rebeca Gillespie
said.
