Diction, Imagery, Detail, and Syntax (DIDS) in Poetry

Worksheet
Instructions: Analyze the text you selected and fill out the following worksheet in detail.
Provide specific examples from the text that support your analysis.

1. Write the title of the text you have analyzed here:

When I Was Fair and Young

2. List at least three examples of diction in the text that add to the overall tone. Explain
how each word contributes to the emotional power of the piece.
An example of diction in the poem is "favor graced me" this once again illustrates her class
and power. A second one is "Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more."
this shows that she is very serious about wishing to be left alone.

3. List at least three examples of imagery in the text that add to the overall tone. Explain
how each description contributes to the emotional power of the piece.
Scorn is a strong word that means to hate someone and turn away from them or yell which
really adds emotion to the poem. Mistress adds the image of another women which gives a
feeling of great power , and importune extenuates the felling of begging that she was sick of .

4. List the examples of important details the author chose to include. Explain how these
details contribute to the emotional power of the piece.
She included that this all happened when she was young which leads to believe that it has
stopped now that she is older, i noticed she also named Venus as an example this is meant
to be a proof to us of a way of saying she is not lying to us but is stating the truth.

5. List the examples of important details the author chose to omit. Explain how these
missing details contribute to the emotional power of the piece.
The author omitted telling us any figures of the number of men or her age. She also omitted
the specific names of the men that came to court her and let our imagination run wild. With
her being a queen its probable that hundreds of men convey through the piece that she was
some sort of a valuable commodity in her time. She was of great importance and great
desire to men

6. Analyze the authors use of syntax in this text. Are the sentences long or short? Does
the author use punctuation to slow down the pace, or short phrases to quicken it?
Explain how the sentence structure contributes to the emotional power of the piece.

I would say the sentences are short but there is however a few long ones. The author uses
punctuation and short se ntences to slow down the pace of the poem which contributes to
the emotional power of the piece by building up the emotional power. It helps create a vision
of her overwhelming regret at not making the right choices when she was young, so the
reader cannot look away and can sympathize with her.
7. Select a tone (or multiple tones) from the list of Tone Words. Explain why this tone is
the best way to describe this text.
The tones in the poem are, regret, mournful, authoritative, unhappy, and miserable. These
tones are the best way to describe this poem because this poem is about her reminiscing
when she was young and they show regret, and what she had a chance to get but lost and
they also show her power and authority.
