IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON EDUCATION FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION

DR. PRODIP DAS, AT, KYSN(H.S) HOOGHLY, W.B.

The entire spectrum of globalization with a focus on studying its influence

on and implications for the educational system. Even at the cost of repetition, it
may be globalization is a recent phenomenon in the worlds socio-economic
system. It has so far not yielded any spectacular outcomes. It has accelerated the
pace of development in some areas but has led to certain incongruities in others.
Globalization and social change, as an effective instrument of international
exchange of goods and services, has to have a human face, based on ethical
considerations rather that on cut-throat competition. It should play a positive
role in reducing economic and social disparities within, and among, the nations.
It should also be an effective tool for promoting sustainable development.
Globalization has a multi-dimensional impact on the system of education. It has underlined the
need for reforms in the educational system with particular reference to the wider utilization of
information technology.
It has also given rise to controversies relating to introducing changes in the inter-scrotal priorities
in the allocation of resources leading to the misconceived policy of downsizing of secondary and
higher education. It has also advocated privatization of higher education without realizing the
dangerous possibility of making the system a commercial enterprise. Further, internationalization
of education particularly higher education has been advocated without due regard to the needs
and susceptibilities of the developing countries.
It is, therefore, necessary that each country should decide about the nature and extent of
globalization that can be constructively introduced in their socio-economic and educational
system. While it is difficult to resist the temptation of falling in line with the international
community. This is more so in the field of education which is intimately concerned with the
development of human capital.
We live in a world that is multi-dimensional, polycentric and contingent. Globalization
has paved the way for a society that is no longer tied to the apron strings of a nation state. Here
the national and multi-national, state and market, and private coexist.
Globalization is a very real phenomenon that is transforming the world economic system
including nearly all aspects of production, distribution and other business processes. With the

emergence of a new development model, particularly in highly Industrialished economics,

knowledge and information take on increasing importance. Thus, the era of Globalization has
tremendous concomitant implications for knowledge, education and learning.
The quoting the prophetic statement of Mahatma Gandhi made long before globalization
was ever through of I do not want my house to be walled on all sides and my windows to be
stuffed. I want the culture of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I
refuse to be blown off my feet by any.
Significance of the study:
Globalization and social change is no more a recent phenomenon in worlds socioeconomic system. Very little of the sphere of human activity, be it political, economic, social or
personal, has been left untouched by its effects. In its best aspects, its effect has been
emancipator: people are batter informed and batter connected, therefore less isolated and batter
able to know and understand make informed decision, better able to seek opportunities and act
upon them, less bound by boundaries of geography and convention. So the significance of
Globalization has been uneven and responses to it are varied in terms of its positive and negative
dimensions the world over, Initial enthusiasm for Globalizationas a beneficial set of processes
has yielded to an understanding that the phenomenon is largly associated with increasing social
inquality within and between coutries as well as instability and conflict. Thus, it is time to assess
the impact of Globalization of Indias economy, it has expedited the pace of development in
some areas, it has led to certain absurdities in others.
Globalization has a multi-dimensionalo inmpact on the system of social change. It has underlined
the need for reforms in the wider utization of information technology, giving productivity
dimension to education and enphasis on its research and development activities.
Education is an important investment in building human capital that is a driver for technological
innovation and economics growth. It is only driver through improving the educational status of a
society that the multifaceted development of its people can be ensure. In the post-industrialized
world, the advanced countries used to derive the major proportion ofv their national income not
form agriculture and industry but form the service sector. Since the service sector is based on
imparting skills or traning to the students and youth, the education sector is the most sought after.
It must provide gainful employment so that the sector is developed is a big way. It has also
advocated
Privation of higher education without realizing the danger of marking the system a commercial
enterprise. In this respect the study is totally relevant and significant.
