QUIZ 1 - Review guidelines

General Guidelines:
The quiz is designed to help you make sense of all the information we've been going over so far, so that you'll feel well
grounded in the Roman world before we move from Caesar to the coming of the Empire.
You have encountered many names, places and terms in your reading and in lecture. This information is essential to understanding
ancient Rome. Expect the quizzes to test your understanding of basic facts (geography, people, events, vocabulary) and that have
been presented to you in readings, lectures and discussions. In order to help you sift through the immense amount of materials, we
have given you review lists on the Ning site - they are all located under the Resources area. These lists are not exhaustive, meaning
not everything on the quiz necessarily appears on the list and vice versa. What this list will ensure - if you know the items on these
lists, you will pass the quiz.

Types of Questions:
The quiz is made up of five sections: Fill in the blank, True and False, Definitions, Identifications and Quotation.

• Fill in the Blank:

You will be given several statements and asked to fill in the missing item. These may be comprised vocabulary, names,
terms, places, etc. These questions are worth 2 points each. There will NOT be a word bank.
• True and False:
You will be given statements and you will indicate if these statements are true or false. You do not need to correct false
statements. These questions will draw from all of the material given (readings, lectures, etc.) and are worth 2 points each.
• Definitions:
You will be given a list of terms and asked to define them in 1-2 sentences. You will be able to choose from a list (ex: you
are given 9 and asked to answer 5 or something along those lines - make sure to read the directions!). Your answers must
clearly define the term; if you give examples, these must be in addition to the actual definition. Partial credit will be given.
These questions are worth 5 points each.
• Identifications:
You will be given a list of names, places or events and asked to explain their significance them in 2-3 sentences. You will be
able to choose from a list (ex: you are given 10 and asked to answer 6 or something along those lines - make sure to read
the directions!). Your answers must clearly explain who/what the person/place/event is, citing major details. Partial credit
will be given. These questions are worth 5 points each.
• Quotation:
You will be asked to identify a quotation by author name AND title. You will also explain the significance of the quote. The
quotation will be taken from something you read for discussion section. This question will be worth 5 pts.

Basic Information:
Again, all of the material on this quiz can be found in the readings, the lectures and discussion notes. Readings refer to ALL assigned
reading, whether for lecture or discussion. You have access to everything you know. If you have been keeping up with the reading
and attending lectures, you should have no problem with this material.

The quiz will be held on Tuesday, February 23 in ARJ 105 at 3:30 pm. You will have the entire class period to take the quiz. Please
come to the quiz prepared with reliable writing instruments, as we will NOT provide additional pens and pencils. Write your name
on all pages and staple everything together (a stapler will be provided).

Upon completion of the quiz, you MUST turn it in to YOUR section leader.

***Make up policy: All quiz make-ups will be held at the end of the semester. See the syllabus for this policy. You must contact
either Prof. Noussia or your TA to notify them about a need for a makeup quiz.
