More than half of Wisconsin public school districts will receive less
general aid for the upcoming school year than they
did for the past school
year, according to DPI
estimates. Although the
201517 state budget has
not been finalized, the
most recent version of the
biennial budget maintains
the same level of general
school aid ($4.476 billion)
as was appropriated in the
201415 fiscal year.
Of the states 424 school
districts, 55 percent (234)
are estimated to receive
less general aid in 201516, while 44 percent of
districts (188) are expected to receive more aid.
The DPIs July 1 aid
estimate does not include
per pupil categorical aid,
which will be determined
this fall, based on student
membership from the last
three school years . The
current budget appropriates
$127 million for that aid,
which is $150 per pupil,
the same amount as it was
in the 201415 fiscal year.

FEATURING:
A Stoughton woman on
Monday pled not guilty to
13 charges of embezzlement.
Deanna Braaten, 49, is
charged with
seven counts
of theft in a
business setting, and six
counts of
theft of movable property. The latter Braaten
charges stem
from allegations that Braaten took
nearly $200,000 from the
accounts of an 83-year-old
Stoughton woman residing
in an assisted living facility. Braaten is also charged
with taking over $86,000
from the Stoughton Vikings
Wrestling Club.
The club began emergency fundraising efforts following its discovery of the
missing money. A GoFundMe account established
in late May in the groups
name has raised just over
$5,000, only one-third of
the groups goal.
Braaten remains free on a
cash bond.

A goose that had been like a pet to folks living along the Yahara River across from Division Street
Park died last week after what Melissa Bleiler and Gregory Lee, believe was an intentional poisoning.
Previous issues
Lee and Bleiler said its
not the first time that geese
or ducks living in their
neighborhood have been
poisoned. Lee recalled a
similar incident happening
about five years ago.
He said several years
ago, people complained
about the late David Kneebone, a former city alder,
feeding geese and ducks
and other birds in his yard.
The city then passed an
ordinance prohibiting people from feeding them.
But the city couldnt
enforce the ordinance on
private property, Lee said.
They could only make
it illegal in the parks, he
said. But this has happened before. Weve had
people out there who think
its fun to let their dogs
loose to harass the geese,
and dont understand thats
a violation of the Federal
Migratory Waterfowl Act.
