1. Introduction
1.1 Background
This document covers calculation of cable sizing for electrical loads in Arun NGL Area 19. The
facility is located in Lhokseumawe, Aceh and operated by PERTAMINA GAS., hereinafter is
referred to as COMPANY.
The purpose of calculation is to provide cable sizing requirement for AC and DC electrical loads.
At this point of time, some parameters used in this calculation are only rough estimation. It is
VENDORS responsibility to verify this calculation to meet COMPANY requirement to run the
facilities operable and safely. The VENDOR shall be required to update this document, once
specific information has been defined. Should there be discrepancies or anomalies between
documents, VENDOR shall clarify and responsible for the revision of the documents and
consequences thereof.

1.2 Objectives

3. Basis and Assumptions

3.1 Design Basis
3.1.1

Correction Factors for Cable Ampacity

Ampacity (current carrying capacity) of cable is subject to be affected by ambient temperature
and its installation arrangement. Therefore the standard ampacity shall be multiplied by
correction factors to accommodate those effects.
Temperature correction factor will be applied to cables passing outdoor area, where the
ambient temperature is assumed at 40C (Project Design Basis article 7.2.2). The temperature
inside Electrical Room and Control Room will be maintained using Air Conditioner, hence the
correction factor is not applied to indoor cables. Based on Table A.52-14 of IEC 60364-5-52
(Attachment 3), the correction factor for ambient temperature of 40C is 0.91.
Ampacity of cable is also derated when more than one circuit or more than 1 multi-core cable
are arranged in groups. For this calculation, it is assumed that 4 multi-core cables are installed
in perforated tray. According to Table A.52-17 of IEC 60364-5-52 (Attachment 4), the
correction factor for this arrangement is 0.77. Therefore the overall correction factor is:
F = Ft . F g
Where

: overall correction factor

Ft

: correction factor for ambient temperature

Fg

: correction factor for cable grouping consideration

Permissible Voltage Drop

The permissible voltage drop at end load shall be limited to the following value.

LV motor feeder at steady state : 5%

LV motor feeder at starting motor : 15%

Non motor feeders

: 3%

For this FEED 75 KM pipeline project from point B Arun to SLS A Development, there is no
motor load, hence the allowable voltage drop is limited to 3% for all loads.

4. Sizing Calculation
4.1 Sample Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop Calculation
The sample cable sizing and voltage drop calculation presented here is based on catalogue from
cable vendor (GT Cable). The actual manufacturers data shall apply after the equipment vendor
is selected and the type of cables is decided.

Electrical Cable Sizing

Calculation

SLS - 40 - ELE - CAL - 002

10 of 10

Based on vendor catalogue (GT Cable), ampacity (A) for 4/C 6mm Copper conductors is 69 A.
Therefore the derated ampacity (Aderated) for 1 cable run is:
Aderated

= A . Ft . Fg
= 69 . 1 . 0.77
= 53 A

Number of cable
To fulfill the design current, the number of cable shall be:

I FL
18.9

0.357 1 cable
A derated
53
2

Hence the proposed cable for connecting MDP to HVAC Distribution Panel is 1 x 4/C 16mm .
Voltage drop
The voltage drop is calculated as follows:

VD k. I FL (R.cos X.Sin ).

L 100% 1
.
.
1000 V n

3 x 18.9 (3.972 x 0.8 0.083 x 0.6) x

.
.
1000 400 1

= 0.69%
2

Based on the calculated voltage drop, the selected cable (1 x 4/C 16mm ) is acceptable.
4.2 Overall Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop Calculation
Complete calculations of cable sizing and voltage drop can be found in Attachment 1.

5. Conclusion and Result

Based on calculations presented in Attachment 1, the result of Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop
Calculation are considered satisfactory and hence acceptable as per cable sizing criteria

The data used for Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop Calculation is preliminary information that
showing minimum requirements. Contractor shall review, verify, design and finalize during
detail engineering
