In 2011, the National Conference of Black Mayors, Inc. (NCBM) made great
strides toward bridging the gap between local communities and government. NCBM
had the honor of meeting with President Barack Obama, Cabinet members, and
Administration officials at the White House to discuss current issues pertinent to our
member mayor cities with the focus being tangible actions that will yield the stability
and sustainability of local communities.
This year NCBM will celebrate 38 years of existence. NCBM have a legacy
that has withstood the trials and tribulations that institutions such as ours have faced
over the past three decades. Yet here we stand, laser focused with the will to continue
in our mission to empower our mayors as they work to empower their communities.
Today, NCBM represent over 658 African American mayors, who collectively, serve
more than 50 million people in their perspective cities.
There is power in numbers. Therefore, we implore you to not only pay your
membership dues, but to become actively involved in your organization by participating
in your state chapters and NCBM organized events such as the 38th Annual Convention,
Leadership Institute for Mayors, policy summits, and various educational forums.
It is the aim of NCBM in 2012 to strengthen and empower our state chapters.
The National office is only as strong as the state chapters that we collectively represent.
The strength of our state chapters contributes to the collective strength of NCBM.
Mayors are the key to the cities. Together we can work to provide creative and
innovative avenues to fortify municipal development through the various resources and
technical assistance provided by NCBM.
NCBM was created for African American mayors to serve one another and
serve their perspective communities. In order to carry on that mission you must
activate your 2012 membership. It is said that Change begins at home. Lets make a
change in 2012 and have 100% membership participation. By filling out the enclosed
mayor profile data form and returning it along with your annual membership dues will
assist in achieving the goal.
It is our privilege and honor to serve as the President and Executive Director
of the National Conference of Black Mayors. We look forward to sharing our
enthusiasm in embracing the mandate in fulfilling the ideals of this extraordinary
organization.

FACT SHEET

Headquartered in the great state of Georgia, the

majority of NCBM's membership is located in the
Southeast. As a nonprofit, nonpolitical, nonpartisan
organization, educational forums form the
foundation of our services to our members, which
allow us a more effective means to articulate our
membership's concerns on national policy issues.
As we enthusiastically continue to serve as a center
of influence, we humbly acknowledge the fact that
we are in a unique position to not only strengthen
the individual cities of our mayoral membership,
but all cities throughout the United States by leading
by example and blazing new trails in municipal
growth and development.

Major Activities:
Each year, NCBM conducts a leadership institute for
our mayors, which is designed to sharpen their skills
and impart innovative techniques for managing
both financial and human resources. We have
administered numerous federal grants and
generated millions of dollars in public works
projects for our member cities and towns. In 1982,
we established an international thrust, which has
resulted in exchanges with mayors in China, South
and Central America, Africa and the Caribbean.
Annual Convention: Our annual convention attracts
the majority of our membership, municipal staffs,
other elected officials, educators, business people
and foreign dignitaries. Over the course of the fourday meeting, approximately 2,000 people attend the
convention, giving us a total impact that surpasses
50 million people.

State Chapters:
Due to the enormous growth of the organization
over the past 38 years, NCBM has established state
chapters through which the delivery of technical
assistance is facilitated. Fifteen state chapters of
NCBM provide the membership with a local vehicle
for addressing issues of importance to the mayors.
The state chapters meet quarterly and bi-annually.

Committees/Task Forces:
In addition to ten (10) Standing Committees, NCBM
maintains three (3) active task forces/committees
that serve in advisory capacities the Ad Hoc
Committee on Seat Belt Safety, the NCBM/DOE
Task Force, and the Mayors' Task Force on Black
and Minority Health. The standing committees are:

The National Conference of Black Mayors, Inc.

(NCBM) was founded in 1974. Representing over
658 African American mayors nationwide, we are a
private, nonpolitical, nonpartisan, nonprofit, 501(c) 3
tax-exempt organization, with a membership that
allows us to advocate for and impact in excess of 50
million people. Our mission is to enhance the
executive management capacity of our members for
the purpose of governing viable municipalities. As
such, we provide technical and management
assistance to our members, as well as serve as a
clearinghouse on information pertinent to municipal
development.
