2001 Gujarat earthquake:

On January 26, 2001 an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the


Richter scale hit the state of Gujarat killing over 20,000
people. The earthquake occurred at 8:40 in the morning and
lasted for two minutes. Several towns and villages were
destroyed in the catastrophe. Being close to the epicenter,
Bhuj was among the worst affected areas including Anjaar,
Vondh and Bhachau. Several buildings were damaged or
destroyed in the quake. The famous Swaminarayan temple in
the city of Bhuj was also partially damaged.
DESTUCTION CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE

The final death toll in Kutch was 12,300. Bhuj, situated only 20
kilometres (12 mi) from the epicenter, was devastated. Considerable
damage also occurred in Bhachau and Anjar with hundreds of villages

flattened in Taluka of Anjar, Bhuj & Bhachau. Over a million structures


were damaged or destroyed, including many historic buildings and
tourist attractions.[7]The quake destroyed around 40% of homes, eight
schools, two hospitals and 4 km of road in Bhuj and partly destroyed
the city's historic Swaminarayan temple and historic fort as well Prag
Mahal and Aina Mahal. In Ahmedabad, Gujarat's commercial capital
with a population of 5.6 million, as many as 50 multi-storied buildings
collapsed and several hundred people were killed. Total property
damage was estimated at $5.5 billion and rising

1950 Assam earthquake:

The 1934 Bihar earthquake is considered to be one of the


worst quakes in Indian history. The quake occurred on
January 15, 1934 and was recorded 8.1 on the Richter scale.
Over 30,000 people were said to have been killed in the
disaster. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in
eastern Nepal. Extensive damage was caused to life and
property. The intensity of the earthquake was so strong that
its effect was felt in Kolkata-650 km from epicenter. Purnea,
Munger, Muzaffarpur and Champaran were among the worst
affected areas.
DESTUCTION CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE

At least 780 people killed and many buildings, Two thousand homes,
temples and mosques destroyed. Hardest hit is the Brahmaputra Basin
in NE India and In the Arbor Hills 70 villages were destroyed with 156
casualties due to landslides.

1991 Uttarkashi earthquake

On October 20, 1991 an earthquake measuring 6.1on


the Richter scale shook the districts of
Uttarkashi,Chamoli and Tehrilocated in the state of
Uttarakhand. Over a thousand people were killed in the
quake and extensive damage was caused to property.
The tremors of the quake were felt up to Delhi.

DESTUCTION CAUSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE

The earthquake measured 6.8 on


the moment magnitude scale and occurred
within the main thrust system of
the Himalayas.[2] 1294 villages and more
than 300,000 people were affected with
the quake and 42,400 houses were
damaged.[3
