Austin Health has appointed a Director of Medical Education to
head up the Medical Education Unit. The Director works with
the HMO Manager to ensure that the best possible rotations are
available for doctors in training at Austin Health. The Education
Unit is well supported by both clinical and non-clinical staff
including a Director of Clinical Training, Supervisor of Intern
Training, Director of Physician Training, GP Liaison Officer,
Medical Clinical Educator, Medical Education Officer and Projects
Coordinator.

The Surgery Centre, located at the Repatriation Campus

of Austin Health opened another four theatres in February
2013, bringing the total number of theatres in the complex to
eight. The Surgery Centre offers a radical departure from the
traditional model of surgery through the separation of elective
and emergency surgical and endoscopic procedures.
This
separation allows for increased throughput of elective cases
and a decrease in the cancellation of these cases due to the
competing pressure of emergency surgery. The Surgery Centre
currently treats up to 5000 patients each year. This number is
expected to increase with the additional capacity provided by the
four newly refurbished theatre suites.

GP Rural Generalist Pathway

The concept is to develop a pathway visible to those who are
still within the clinical training years at Medical School, especially
those associated with Deakin University, taking them through
the prevocational years (Intern and Postgraduate Year 2) into
a choice of targeted skills training in their third or subsequent
postgraduate years on their path to specific training within the
general practice environment in the Barwon South West Region
or other areas covered by Southern GP Training.
Targeted skills training in the third or subsequent postgraduate
year would be in the fields of Obstetrics (Advanced Diploma),
JCCC Anaesthetics, Critical Care (ICU and or Emergency
Medicine), Surgery or Community Paediatrics. The pathway
involves 5 years of training 3 years with Barwon Health and two
years with Southern GP Training.
Successful applicants for this pathway must exhibit a genuine
interest in undertaking a career in rural general practice,
preferably within the Barwon South West Region of Victoria.
Applicants who have undertaken their medical training at Deakin
Medical School or one of the other Victorian Medical Rural Clinical
Schools are preferred.

16

All successful applicants will be expected to already be part of

the Australian GP Training or apply for GP training via AGPT
with Southern GP Training, during their intern or subsequent
postgraduate years.
