4-H is more than a club – it is young
people getting ready for the future. In
4-H, you will work with other people
in a 4-H club, in your school or with
another organization. 4-H’ers can also
go to camps, show their work at fairs,
travel, host youth from other countries,
attend meetings and events with other
young people, and much, much more.
What will I do in 4-H?
4-H members choose projects that
interest them. Texas has more than 40
4-H projects to choose from. You attend
meetings, participate in new learning
experiences, and may be involved in
making presentations and community
service projects. You may also want to
participate in 4-H camps the county
fair or trips to other states and coun-
tries.
Call your local office of Texas AgriL-
ife Extension Service. It is listed in the
phone book along with other county of-
fices. Adrian Arredondo, the 4-H Agent
for Wise County, will be able to guide
you to 4-H opportunities in your area.
How much does it cost to join 4-H?
Joining 4-H costs little or nothing.

ment to get started.

Successful comeback
Program aims to help inmates transition into society

When inmates are released from the
Bridgeport Pre-Parole Transfer Facil-
ity, Warden Mary Brandin hopes that
the women will find a job, have suc-
cessful relationships with their friends
and family and become contributing
members of their community.
But without a program in the facil-
ity to support these hopes, released in-
mates are left to struggle in a society
they have not been a part of for some
time.
“When you are removed from soci-
ety for any period of time at all, there
are so many habits that you forget or
that you lose out on from being locked
up,” Brandin said. “You want offenders
to come into the community and be a
contributing factor for the community.
You don’t want the community to be
fiscally responsible for someone in the
community.”
The Bridgeport facility plans to be-
gin the Bridgeport Re-entry Initiative,
a faith-based program that will also
serve as an educational program for
inmates at the end of July.
The Re-entry Initiative relies on the
help of volunteers to serve as educators
and mentors to inmates six months
prior to and after their release.
“The intent of the program is to rein-
tegrate the offender back into the com-
munity,” Brandin said.
While serving their final six months
at the facility, inmates will have the
opportunity to attend classes on topics
such as anger management, finance,
family management and community
participation. Inmates will also be re-
introduced to simple social skills.
“When you’ve only been able to eat
with plastic spoons and forks and then
you’re handed a knife, you don’t know
what to do,” said Cheryl Evans, volun-
teer coordinator.

Evans, who has led Bible study at
the Bridgeport facility for a year and
a half, looks at the program as a way
to become more involved with the in-
mates.
“I think getting to have a relation-
ship with the girls and getting to know
them more and be able to keep in touch
with them is what attracts me to this
program,” Evans said. “It’s almost like
I’m a mother hen keeping track of the
chicks.”
By preparing inmates for release
with social, lifestyle and occupation
skills, Evans and Brandin hope to re-
duce the recidivism rate, which is 27.2

them – when they get out, they go
right back into the environment that
got them there in the first place. This
helps them have peace of mind – they
know they have someone to guide them.
It helps them establish a rapport with

the community.”
Of about 200 inmates, 65 have sub-
mitted applications to participate in
the program.
“The offenders here at the facility
have a strong desire to give back to the
local community. They even agree that
getting into this program will help
them do that. They’ll be more confident
and independent,” Brandin said. “They
want to be respected by their family
and community. They want to be aware
of what is going on.”

ans encourages anyone interested,

need the jacket to help them

cial life jacket that is made
for a pet because a lifejacket
made for a human will not
fit correctly and could get
