GENERAL
To prepare a breather valve (so-called pressure vacuum relief valve)
data sheet, project specification should be applied preferentially, if it is
required. After that this guide is utilized to fill-up a adequate data at each
item. If the design pressure of storage tank is smaller than 1.0 kg/cm2G
(15 psig), this guide can be applied. If not, data sheet should be
prepared based on the preparation guide for safety valve data sheet.
For the details of technical matter, refer to the following code &
standard.
- API std. 2000

INFORMATION
2.1

Tag Number
Tag number is a identification number of breather valve and
specified as PSVSV-000 regardless of its type.

2.2

Quantity
Quantity is specified using the Arabic numerals and sometimes
an English letter and bracket may be used for quantity, if
required.

2.3

Service
The number of equipment or location, at which breather valve is
installed, is specified.
Examples are shown as followings.
ex) V-1111, T-2222 OVHD etc

This is composed of "In breathing" and "Out breathing" to specify

each process data independently.
2.5

Line Class
This indicates the line class or line spec. of breather valve inlet
and outlet after confirming P&ID. This item should be described
because it is helpful to confirm the material of PVSV. If the line
class is not represented on P&ID, base material may be
described as followings.
ex)

2.6

Carbon steel : C.S

Stainless steel: S.S or 304 S.S, 316 S.S, monel etc.

Fluid Name
This is composed of "In" and "Out" to specify each fluid name
independently.
If the fluid is toxic, it is specified as "toxic service" at Remark

2.7

Max. Operating Pressure

The design pressure of equipment, at which breather valve is
installed, is specified for max. operating pressure. This is
composed of "In" for negative pressure and "Out" for positive
pressure.
ex)
In : -50 mmH2O
Out: +150 mmH2O

2.8

Operating Temperature
This is composed of "In" and "Out". The normal operating
temperature of equipment or line, at which breather valve
installed, is specified at "Out" and the operating temperature of
inbreathing fluid is specified at "In".

2.9

Relieving Rate (Normal)

This indicates the required flow rate based on the calculation of
API std. 2000.
Required flow rate means the in/out breathing rate by the
empting/filling of process fluid. Sm3/hr (API std. 2000) or m3/hr
are used as the unit of relieving rate. When the relieving rate is
represented using Sm3/hr, the unit basis (15oC, 1atm, Air)
should be specified at Remark.

2.10

Relieving Rate (Emergency)

This is not specified usually. But when the emergency vent
facility (emergency hatch) is installed, another item no. is used
and relieving rate (emergency) is specified. Emergency hatch is
installed because the venting rate for the fire exposure of
storage tank is larger than the normal relieving rate generally. At
this time, the venting rate is calculated using API std. 2000.
Sm3/hr (API std. 2000) or m3/hr are used as the unit of relieving
rate. When the relieving rate is represented using Sm3/hr, the
unit basis (15oC, 1atm, Air) should be specified at Remark.

2.11

Set Pressure
At set pressure, breather valve will start to operate. Usually the
operating pressure range of equipment, at which breather valve
is installed, is utilized as set pressure. When the breather valve
and emergency hatch are installed simultaneously, equipment
design pressure may be used for the set pressure of emergency
hatch. The following example shows the sample of set pressures
of breather valve and emergency hatch in this case.
ex) When the Set points of Breather valve are In : -25 mmH2O
Out: 100 mmH2O,

The set points of Emergency hatch are in: -50 mmH2O

Out : 150300 mmH2O
2.12

Back Pressure (Constant)

This is not specified usually.

2.13

Back Pressure (from - to)

This is not specified usually.

2.14

Overpressure %
This indicates the gap between the set pressure and relieving
pressure as a percent of set pressure. If the set pressure equals
the maximum allowable working pressure, overpressure is equal
to accumulation.

2.15

Breathing Temperature
This is composed of "In" and "Out". The estimated temperature
at breathing condition is specified at "Out", but normally the
estimated temperature is equal to process operating
temperature. And the operating temperature of inbreathing fluid
is specified at "In".

2.16

Specific Gravity
This is not specified usually.

2.17

Viscosity, cP
This is not specified usually.

Molecular Weight
This is composed of "In" and "Out". For "Out", molecular weight
of process fluid at relieving condition or average molecular
weight of inert gas and process fluid is specified. And for "In",
molecular weight of inbreathing fluid is specified.

2.19

Cp/Cv
This is the ratio of heat capacity. (Cp : heat capacity at constant
pressure, Cv : heat capacity at constant volume) Cv can be
calculated easily using Cv = Cp - R (R : gas constant) under the
assumption that the gas is ideal gas. This is composed of "In"
and "Out". For "Out", the value for relieving condition is specified
at "Out" and the value for inbreathing fluid is specified at "in".

2.20

Z, Compressibility Factor
The value at relieving condition is specified and if there is no
calculated value, 1.0 is specified.

2.21

Equipment Design Pressure mmH2O

This indicates the design pressure of equipment at which

breather valve is installed.
As this is used only for reference, there is no necessity to
specify.
2.22

MAWP mmH2O
This means the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure of
equipment at which breather valve is installed. Set pressure
should be lower than MAWP.
As this is used only for reference, there is no necessity to

specify.
2.23

Flame arrester
As per the local regulation of Korea, flame arrester should be
installed for the fluid of which flash point is lower than 65.
However, as per the NFPA CODE (NFPA 30), it should be
installed for the fluid of which flash point is lower than 100F.
When the supply of flame arrester is specified at "Note 1",
specify an English letter among A to C.

2.24

P&ID NO.
This indicates the P&ID number at which breather valve is
shown.

2.25

Remark
This indicates if there are items to be noted specially.
ex)
1) Toxicity of fluid
: toxic service
2) when Sm3/hr is used : Converted into air at 15,1atm
