KARNATAKA GOVERNMENT POLYTECHNIC, MANGALORE

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

THERMAL ENGINEERING I

Time: 1 Hour
Test III
IV SEM (MECH)
Instructions: 1. Answer any FOUR full questions.
2. All questions carry equal marks.
3. Use of steam tables is permitted.

Max. Marks: 20

1. With a neat sketch explain determination of calorific value of solid and liquid fuels.
2. Derive an equation for air standard efficiency of an Otto cycle.
3. In a diesel engine, the compression ratio is 13:1 and the fuel is cut-off at 8% of the stroke. Find the air
standard efficiency of the engine.
4. With neat diagram explain the formation of steam at constant pressure from water.
5. Calculate the enthalpy of 1 kg of steam at a pressure of 8 bar and dryness fraction is of 0.8. How much
heat would be required to raise 2 kg of this steam from water at 20 oC ?
6. Calculate the internal energy of 1 kg of steam at a pressure of 10 bar when the steam is i). 0.9 dry and
ii) dry saturated
