RESEARCH ABSTRACT
This descriptive survey aimed to compare the attitudes and
performance of the students from broken and intact homes. The Aiken
Revised Math Attitude Scale was used to measure the attitude and the
final grades as the performance of the respondents. The study involved
three heterogeneous sections of the Fourth Year Students of Mabolo
National High School for School Year 2014-2015. Twenty (20)
respondents from broken homes were identified and 20 corresponding
respondents from intact homes were randomly selected from the three
sections. Each group consists of 8 males and 12 females.
Findings revealed that 1) the performance in Mathematics of the
students from broken homes and intact homes was Above Average.
2.1) there was no significant difference in the Mathematics
performance between males and females from broken homes. 2.2)
there was no significant difference in the Mathematics performance
between males and females from intact homes. 2.3) there was a
significant difference in the Mathematics performance between the
students from broken homes and intact homes in favor of the students
from intact homes. 3) the attitude towards Mathematics of the
students from broken homes and intact homes was Neutral. 4) there
was no significant difference in the attitudes towards Mathematics
between males and females from broken homes; males and females
from intact homes; and between students from broken homes and
intact homes. 5.1) there was a positive substantial significant
correlation between the attitudes towards Mathematics and the
Mathematics performance of the students from broken homes. 5.2)
there was a positive high significant correlation between the attitudes
towards Mathematics and the Mathematics performance of the
students from intact homes.
These were the conclusions arrived at: Certain internal and
external factors affect learning. The type of family or home a student
comes from maybe one of the key factors that affect his academic
performance. Based on the findings of this present study, students
from intact homes performed better than those coming from broken
homes. In addition, attitude of students towards Mathematics is a key
determinant factor in their performance on the subject. The family
systems theory which states that a family is a system of
interconnected and interdependent individuals and which gives
explanation on how and why most students from intact homes behave
well in school resulting to good academic performance is concurred
with in this study.

3
These were the two recommendations of the study:
Consistent with the conclusions, appropriate recommendations
for needed action were offered.
