The Internet-Based TOEFL Test (TOEFL-iBT)

The TOEFL-iBT is a test of the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This Internet-based test gives institutions more
information about a students preparation for communicating in an academic setting. The four-hour exam consists of four sections, one for each
skill. The content of each section is based on a 2.7 million-word database of spoken and written language. This corpus was collected from
educational institutions throughout the United States and includes both formal and informal spoken English. The written corpus was collected
from textbooks and course materials.
The reading section consists of three academic readings followed by comprehension questions. The new version includes a glossary. The
listening section is made up of two conversations and four lectures. The students can take notes while they are listening. The speaking section
includes two tasks based on the reading and listening material and two independent tasks. Raters are trained by TESOL to evaluate the
students ability to develop topics, deliver information clearly, and use the language coherently. The student also produces two written tasks.
One is based on a previous activity and the other is independent.

XI Read this text about high blood pressure. Match the words from the text with their definitions.
Blood Pressure
If you have high blood pressure and your doctor prescribes more exercise, you dont have to shell out extra money to go to an exclusive gym. A
recent study has shown that working around the house can give you as much exercise as an extensive workout. What kind of housework is
included? It can be cleaning, yard work, or even washing the car.
These activities have been demonstrated to lower blood pressure appreciably in people suffering from hypertension. In a study that was reported
in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, 28 people from 42 to 63 years of age were asked to burn 150 calories in 12 hours
working around the house. Their blood pressure and the amount and intensity of their activities were monitored. The researchers found that
four hours of lifestyle physical activity were sufficient to reduce blood pressure for six to eight hours. This indicates that conventional
physical activity should be considered essential in handling high blood pressure.

We are very happy to have James Yates here with us today. James is one of the leading genealogists in the city. Welcome, James.
Thank you. Its nice to be here.
James, what is a genealogist?
Its a person who studies the history of families.
Why do people want to learn about their ancestors?
There are many reasons. Sometimes their grandparents tell them stories about their ancestors and they decide to find out if the stories were true. Other times,
something happens that ignites the interest. Last week I met a woman whose grandmother had just died. While she was cleaning out her things, she found hundreds
of old photographs. The woman now wants to find out who these people were. Another man I know found his grandfathers journal and was amazed to realize his
grandfather had been born on a ship that was coming from Ireland. In fact, there are many reasons people get interested.
A
Where is the best place to start looking for information?
B
Nowadays the Internet is a great starting place. If your ancestors came from the United States, you can find images of all the U.S. censuses online. Also, many
genealogists have posted all their research and you can find out if someone has already investigated your family. There are also electronic mailing lists where you can ask
about an ancestor and maybe even find a lost cousin.
