Everystoryhassomethingtosayandeverystory
conveysamessagetothereader,whetherits
somethingabouttheworldingeneral,oraboutthe
humancondition,andthekindofissuesthatrelateto
allofus.Theseareallrelayedthroughthecharacters
thatinhabitthestory.
Anyintendedmessagecanbeovert,subtleorimplied.
Themoralofastoryisnottobeconfusedwiththe
authorspersonalthoughtsandfeelings,becauseasa
rule,anauthorshouldneverpersonallyintrudea
story.Instead,moralsaretheproductsofour
observationsandtheissuesthatimpactallofus,and
howwecanlearnandgrowfromthem.
Thinkofthesnippetsofwisdomgiventoyoubyyour
parentsorgrandparentsthesearethebasisof
variousmoralsadaptedbysocietyandusedfor

Ifyouhaveeverwonderedhowyoucanmakeyour
writingthatmuchstronger,thenthepowerofverbsand
nounsmighthelp.Unlikeadjectivesandadverbs,which
actuallyweakenyourwriting,theuseofstrongverbs
andnounsmakethenarrativemoredynamic,vibrant
and,aboveall,activeinordertohelpstrengthenthe
narrativeconsiderably.
Theyareoftenreferredtoasactionwordsbecause
theyareespeciallyusefulforthefluidityandmotion
withinsentences,wherethesubjectisdoing
something.Sowhenitcomestoinjectingclarity,
movementandaction,wordslikewalk,grab,runand
chopetc.,conveytothereaderexactlywhattheyneed
toknow.
Theycanexpressthephysical(torun,towalk,tofight),
theycanshowastateofbeing(toappear,tobe)or
theycanshowusmentalactions(tothink,toponder).
Theinterestingthingaboutverbsisthat,unlikeadverbs
andadjectives,theycanchangeinform,andthereare

telephonetocallhomeoncehehadarrived.
Nounsprovideamultitudeoffunctionswithin
sentencesassubjects,asdirectobjects,asindirect
objects,assubjectcomplementsorobject
complements.Theyareeverywhere,andwithout
them,writingwouldbeprettybland.
Howdoverbsandnounswork?
Infictionwriting,verbsandnounsdotheworkforyou.
Usingmoreactiveverbsenablesyoutobespecific
withinyourwriting,andnounstellusthepeople,the
places,theobjects,animalsandthings.Forexample:
Tomgrabbedtheflashlightandlistenedatthedoor.
Heheardthesoundinthehallway,dullthuddown
eachstair.Hispulsedrummedhardbeneathhis

majesticallycaughteverygirlsattention
Thiswholeparagraphisstrewnwithadverbsand
adjectives.Withstrongverbsandnouns,thesentence
ismuchbetter,likethis:
Johnsblueeyessparkledasheshowedofftothegirls
gatheredaroundthedancefloor.Leanandhandsome
inhisruffledshirt,hecaughteverygirlsattentionwith
hisdancemoves.
Whileitstruethatyoucanteradicateeveryadverbor
adjectivefromyournarrativesometimessomeof
thesewordsarerequiredyoucanminimisethe
amountyouuse.Writersoftenrelytoomuchon
adjectives,andthereissuchthingasadjective
overload.Alltheydoisclogthenarrative.
Anotherthingwritersdontalwaysseeistheadverb
usage.Readthroughyourmanuscript/storyandyou
