NETROOTS NATION 2015

Dine (Navajo) elders of Black Mesa, AZ are in the fourth decade of

struggling for their sovereignty.
Peabody Western Coal Company (the largest privately-owned coal company in the world)
has desecrated Dinetah, their sacred land. The air, water, and soil have become toxic. The
people and animals suffer from cancer and Black Lung.
From 1966 to today, over 30 billion gallons of water has been pumped, and over half a
billion tons of coal has been mined in Black Mesa. The cost to Navajo people is forced
relocation by the U.S. federal government of more than 15,000 extended families, paid for
by over half a billion U.S. taxpayer dollars.
In defense of their sacred land, Navajo resisters have endured violations of their civil,
political, and human rights, environmental racism, and injustice. Their livestock have been
confiscated, their wells fenced off, capped off, and bull dozed by the U.S. Bureau of Indian
Affairs (BIA). Their burial and sacred sites have been razed. And yet they are still defending their land and way of life.
