What Should 5G Be About?

5G ubiquitous access to high data services / applications from any device, anywhere, anytime.
To create such an environment, one needs to integrate various services applications, emerging from
various services and access via a mix of access to different fixed and wireless networks.
It should also be based on the customer experience, the quality of service and environmental
settings.
It should also lower the net cost of service access ( / month / Mbit) for consumers.

5G should be a multi-layered, multi-RAT heterogeneous network including 2G, 3G, 4G and RLAN.
5G terrestrial wireless should also interwork / integrate with other radio access technologies like
Fixed Satellite Service (FSS), Broadcast Satellite Service (BSS) & Mobile Satellite Service (MSS)
Systems .

5G Should Enable Converged Service Delivery Via

Multiple Networks / Systems
Following the rapid development of integrated circuit technology, smart terminals and low cost
memory, a trend of integrating applications and functions into a smart electronic equipment is growing.
Traditional mobile phones are replaced by powerful smart phone that functions as PC and phone.
Flat panel TV, digital camera and other consumer electronics are evolving embedded with different
communication modules, enhanced CPUs.
Multiple networks, such as fixed and wireless broadband and satellite communications, will be
converged to support a variety of applications to multi-mode terminals.

To converge the system to provide best user experiences, maximise the spectrum efficiency, and
generate long-term profits is a big challenge facing 5G.
Which is why 5G capable networks will be a
multi-services, multi-bands, multi-RATs and
multi-layers integrated technology.

This includes the convergence of IMT

terrestrial (including RLANs), terrestrial
Broadcast, Satellite and Fixed (fibre etc).

The key point of this convergence lies in that

each system should not only play its own
important role but also cooperates with
other systems.

By this way, converged system can achieve

the highest system efficiency and the best
user experience.

Satellite Play A Role in 5G Service Delivery

Satellites can today deliver very high data rate services (> 100 Mbits/s 1 Gbit/s) in broadcast / multi-cast
mode to small / compact outdoor radio access points for:
o direct delivery of linear / non-linear TV / IPTV services to in-building fixed customers.
o interconnect via 3G/ 4G / RLAN wireless access networks (for in-home / in-building distribution) for
service delivery to in-building mobile users.
Satellite can today also deliver high capacity two-way broadband services for complementary coverage to fixed
or terrestrial wireless networks outside major urban / suburban areas.
o Satellite can help novel content delivery architectures by pushing common content close to the network
edge to reduce content access latency
Novel satellite transmission technologies, spectrum utilisation technologies, and receiver / modem, network
structures will rapidly mature and develop in coming years.

Satellite Broadband An Ongoing Revolution:

The Satellite
Drastic performance evolution in the last years
thanks to multi-beams payload and frequency
re-use technique: High Throughput Satellites
(HTS)

Operators decide whether to embark broadband

specific payloads or to fully dedicate the satellite to
broadband services (business plan).

To Support EU Digital Agenda 2020 Objectives:

Next generation HTS systems providing a significant

improvement.
Target: Terabit/s satellite capacity at viable
economical conditions in the 2020 2025 timeframe.

Satellite Broadband / An Ongoing Revolution:

Example Today: SAT-IP
Once
converted
to
IP,
satellite
communications can be distributed, over
any IP network using wireless (4G, WLAN),
powerline, wired ethernet, or optical fibre.
In a satellite IP environment, any IP device
automatically gets enabled for satellite
reception provided the right software is
available.
o Tablets,
o Laptops,
o Smartphones,
o Connected TVs,
o MediaPlayers,
o IP STBs, etc.

BATS - Background

Broadband Access via Integrated
Terrestrial & Satellite Systems (BATS)
Market forecast in 2020: in many
European regions >50% households
will lack superfast broadband.
However, all will have the ability to
access satellite and most to some
lower speed terrestrial access
technologies.
BATS vision: Bridge the broadband
divide currently widening between
urban and rural areas through an
integrated approach that combines
satellite
with
other
access
technologies.

Technology Developments: BATS & 5G

BATS is a program to address the integrated (satellite plus terrestrial) delivery of Broadband
future Internet services for European coverage
o Addresses EU Digital Agenda objective 2020 delivering >30Mbps to 100% of users by 2020.

In order to accommodate the various areas of Europe (including underserved BB areas) an

ultra high speed satellite system is researched that provides solutions to existing market
barriers of limited bandwidth and high latency and order of magnitude cost/bit reductions.
o This builds on terabit/s satellite system studies conducted by ESA and extends them into an
overall network and service delivery concept.

Traffic is dynamically routed via satellite gateways according to each service required QoE
and the most appropriate delivery mechanism.
o A novel architecture developed to combine satellite & terrestrial delivery via an Intelligent
User Gateway, providing resilience and reliability of service to users via diverse routing.

The wider range of stakeholders involved leads to the proposal of a new business in which
the benefits to all are evaluated.
o BATS new service paradigm focuses on user QoE and is not constrained by a specific
delivery mechanism.
