7 FAS/V3200 Technical FAQ

NetApp Confidential Limited Use

3.7

ARE THERE ANY SINGLE POINTS OF FAILURE IN THE FAS/V3200?

While the chassis backplane is not fault tolerant, there are no active components on the backplane that controllers
rely on to remain in a running state. This passive backplane is a highly reliable component that is very unlikely to
cause an outage on a FAS/V3200 series. Reliable passive backplanes are used in almost all modular storage
systems with two controllers in a single chassis as well as network switches. Also, NetApp has been shipping
systems and subsystems with shared backplanes for quite some time (DS14-class disk shelves, the FAS200 series,
FAS2000, and FAS3100 series) that have demonstrated very high reliabilities of the chassis backplane.

3.8

IS METROCLUSTER AVAILABLE ON THE FAS/V3200 SERIES?

Yes, MetroCluster is available on the FAS/V3200 series in several configuration options. MetroCluster can be used
with all of the configurations covered in Table 1. Note that fabric MetroCluster requires use of DS14mk4 back-end
storage.

3.9

IS THE FAS/V3200 SERIES ALSO AVAILABLE AS V-SERIES?

Yes, V-Series configurations are available with all three models. There are two V-Series requirements for the
FAS/V3200.

An X2054A adapter is required for V3270/V3240 array attach; onboard FC ports are not supported.

The V3210 is limited to one LUN group from a single array and can use the onboard FC ports.

3.10 IS A FLEXCACHE VERSION OF THE FAS/V3200 AVAILABLE?

Yes, there is an SA320 model available based on the FAS/V3270 controller.

3.11 WHICH CHASSIS BAY IS USED FOR CONTROLLERS AND IOXM?

Depending on the configuration, controllers may be installed in the top bay, labeled as A on the chassis, or bottom
bay, labeled as B on the chassis.
IOXMs are always installed in the bottom bay of the chassis, labeled as B on the chassis.
In a standalone FAS/V3210 configuration, the top controller bay is populated and the bottom controller bay is covered
with a blank plate.

WHICH DATA ONTAP RELEASES ARE REQUIRED FOR THE FAS/V3200?

The FAS/V3200 ships with Data ONTAP 8.0.1 and will later support Data ONTAP 7.3.5 when available. If there are
plans to run Data ONTAP 7.3.5 later when available, it is important to not configure features specific to Data ONTAP
8.0.1 (that is, 64-bit aggregates).
To run Data ONTAP 7.3.5 on a FAS/3200, either a fresh install or revert is required. A fresh install is used sometimes
as part of netboot but takes longer to initialize the disks and doesnt preserve any configuration details or data. Revert
is faster and does preserve configurations and data, but is a hidden command and requires support.
See question 4.5 about SP firmware for FAS/V3200 systems running Data ONTAP 7.3.5.

4.4

WHICH DATA ONTAP BUILD DOES THE FAS/V3200 USE?

The FAS/V3200 uses the x86_64 build. This same build supports both AMD and the latest platforms based on Intel.

4.5

ARE THE ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS WITH RUNNING DATA ONTAP 7.3.5 ON
FAS/V3200?

Yes, to run Data ONTAP 7.3.5, the SP firmware must also be upgraded to v1.2.

4.6

HOW ARE NVLOG CONTENTS PROTECTED ON THE FAS/V3200 UPON DIRTY SHUTDOWN?

As with the FAS2000 series, FAS/V3200 uses battery backed-up system memory called NVMEM, and it provides
similar functionality to NVRAM on other FAS platforms. Unlike NVRAM, which uses separate battery backed-up
memory, NVMEM uses space carved out of battery backed-up main system memory to provide NVMEM functionality.

4.7

HOW LONG WILL NVMEM BATTERY BACKUP LAST, AND HOW LONG TO RECHARGE A
COMPLETELY DISCHARGED NVMEM BATTERY?

The NVMEM battery will last up to 72 hours, and it takes 15 hours to charge a completely discharged NVMEM
battery.

4.8

DOES THE FAS/V3200 HAVE AN LCD DISPLAY?

No, the FAS/V3200 does not have an LCD display. However, LEDs are provided on the chassis front to help
determine the state of the controller. Remote management has proven to be the primary source for monitoring
system information versus LCDs. Also, with the SP the state of LEDs can be determined remotely.

4.9

DOES THE FAS/V3200 SERIES SUPPORT REMOTE MANAGEMENT?

The FAS/V3200 uses the new SP, the next-generation RLM and BMC remote management module, for remote
management functionality. The SP has all the features of RLM and BMC along with new ones that improve RASM
capabilities. The new features are covered in question 4.10.
The FAS/V6200 also leverages the new SP.

9 FAS/V3200 Technical FAQ

NetApp Confidential Limited Use

4.10 WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEW SERVICE PROCESSOR MANAGEMENT FEATURES?
The SP performs FRU reporting and tracking, monitors and reports on internal sensors, reports on and can set LED
states, and actively manages FAN speed.
Besides the Ethernet management port interface (external management port is shared by SP and e0M), the SP can
also be accessed from the serial console by toggling with CTRL-G. Use CTRL-D to get back to the serial console.

4.11 IS THE SP CONNECTED TO BOTH ETHERNET AND SERIAL CONSOLE?

The SP is always connected to the Ethernet and serial console and can be accessed from either. If the SP is
accessed over Ethernet, you can toggle to the serial console with CTRL-D. If logged into the serial console, you can
toggle into the SP using CTRL-G. To get back to the serial console, toggle with CTRL-D.

4.12 IS THE SP AN FRU LIKE THE RLM?

No, the SP is integrated on the motherboard but runs its own kernel outside of Data ONTAP and is always available.

4.13 IS THERE A NEW COMMAND TO ADMINISTER THE SP?

Yes, Data ONTAP has added a new command to administer the SP. The new command is sp. The setup command
also prompts for TCP/IP information needed to use the SP using Ethernet.

4.14 WHAT ARE THE SP FIRMWARE LEVELS?

The SP uses v1.1 with Data ONTAP 8.0.1 and requires v1.2 if the controller is reverted to Data ONTAP 7.3.5.

4.15 WHAT ARE THE BIOS LEVELS ON THE FAS/V3200?

FAS/V3200 uses BIOS level 5.0.

4.16 THERE IS NO NMI BUTTON ON FAS/V3200. HOW DO I GENERATE A CORE?

The SP is required to generate a core file. Once logged into the SP, run the command system core.

4.17 WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS IN FAS/V3200?

The FAS/V3200 uses system-level diagnostics, or SLDIAG, in place of the older SYSDIAG on most platforms.
SLDIAG is accessed using maintenance mode during bootup. If sysdiag is entered at the loader prompt ,the system
will boot into maintenance mode.
The FAS/V6200 also uses the new SLDIAG for system diagnostics.

4.18 WHAT IS THE BOOT MEDIUM IN FAS/V3200?

The FAS/V3200 uses a USB flash in place of the CompactFlash and is an FRU item. The USB Flash offers the same
reliability as CompactFlash.
The FAS/V6200 also uses a USB Flash for boot media.

information on the ACP port, review the Storage Subsystem Technical FAQ.

5.7

HOW ARE THE HA INTERCONNECT PORTS USED ON FAS/V3200?

The FAS/V3200 HA interconnect ports, c0a and c0b, are only used with FAS/V3240AE and FAS/V3270AE
configurations and are based in part on having cf licensed. If Data ONTAP detects support, a single controller in a
chassis, and the presence of the cf license during bootup, the HA interconnect ports will be enabled. If Data ONTAP
detects a partner connection over the backplane or no cf license, the HA interconnect ports will be disabled and not
establish a link status if connected.

5.8
