Big Walleye of the Tourney

Chad Formanek and Nick Reid landed this 32-3/4 inch walleye on Saturday to send
them home with plenty of cash. Although the big old girl probably doesnt weigh
anywhere near the 14.37 pounds on the length-to-weight conversion chart, its all
about inches, and thats what makes this catch-and-release tournament highly
successful in a low mortality rate for the fish. Chad and Nick received $1710 for
Saturdays big walleye, and it also got them 4th place in Saturdays day money
winners, upping their weight to 18.84 pounds for $600. It leap-frogged them to 25th
place in the final standings of the tournament (21.59 pounds) for an additional $550.
Just goes to show that you can never give up until the final minutes of the Montana
Governors Cup. One big walleye and you could be in the money. (photos swiped

Craigslist Asian carp post turns out to be a hoax

Montana
Fish,
Wildlife
& Parks Enforcement and the
US Fish & Wildlife Service
wrapped up an investigation on
Tuesday into a recent Craigslist
post in which a man claimed to
have dumped buckets of Asian
carp fry into Montana lakes as
well as offering two buckets
of his remaining fry to anyone
wanting them. The post has been
determined to have been a hoax.
An early tip came to FWP
about the post from the 800-TIPMONT hotline Tuesday evening
(and
numerous
concerned

citizens also contacted FWP via

phone, email, and social media).
FWP began its investigation
within an hour of the posts
appearance online.
FWP wardens and USFWS
agents tracked down the man
responsible for the post and when
faced with the gravity of the
situation, he confessed to writing
the post and admitted it was just
a hoax.
FWP Region 3 Supervisor
Sam Sheppard said, Im proud
of our Enforcement teams
response and quick resolution

to this case. Its a testament to

their dedication to protecting
Montanas resources.
Sheppard also offered that
while the Department is relieved,
this is not a joking matter. Asian
carp (notorious for being easily
frightened by boats and personal
watercraft, which causes them to
leap high into the air) and other
prohibited species could pose
irrevocable damage to the states
fisheries.

FWP thanks the public for its
help in this case and its concern
for our resources.

Proposed Shoulder Seasons

FWP Seeks Public Input

on Elk Hunting Seasons

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public
comment on proposed guidelines to establish elk
hunting seasons before or after the existing archery
and general rifle seasons.
The additional seasons, called elk shoulder
seasons, would be used where needed to reduce elk
populations. Were looking at what tools we can
implement to get elk numbers down in districts
where we are over population objectives said Ken
McDonald FWPs Wildlife Division Administrator.
A shoulder season could run from Aug. 15 to Feb.
15 outside the five- week general season.
Comments will be taken until 5 p.m., Aug.
10. To see the proposal and comment, visit the
FWP website at fwp.mt.gov Click Submit Public
Comments, then click Hunting & Trapping
