SUMMER 2015

I would like to acknowledge and thank Debbie and Steve Abshear for
keeping the NWS San Pedro gallery as up-to-date as any museum venue
I have ever seen. This spring Debbie and Steve organized a volunteer clean-up/rebuilding
party that was so much fun, it really should have been called an all day Pizza Party rather
than the super-productive cleanup day it actually was. However, volunteerism can only do
so much. The general repair and maintenance of the gallery with its valuable permanent
collection is an ongoing concern and does not come without a cost. During the cleanup,
we discovered our roof is in dire need of repairs. Your NWS Donation of any size (directed
exclusively to the Building Fund) would be a welcome gift.
The now sparkling NWS Gallery currently hosts our Members Exhibition juried by
Carol Carter and is up until July 31. Carol did a superb job of selecting a wide variety of
beautiful watercolors which were skillfully arranged by Son Do and professionally hung
by Steve Abshear. In addition to selecting this wonderful exhibition, Carol Carter then
completely filled two back-to-back workshops.
On June 4, during an event called 1st Thursday, San Pedros Chamber of Commerce
escorted a group of 40 people to our gallery, and some commented that they couldnt
believe they were looking at watercolors! The NWS gallery is now very much a part of
San Pedros vibrant art scene. This is vital as the gallery is maintained by volunteers.
Signature member Katharine Cartwright, NWS has created a brand new $3000 Award
exclusively for NWS and non-objective artists. The brilliance of Katharines conception,
which she has called The Vanguard Award, is that it is only available to a first-time accepted
entrant working in the area of non-objective water media. The Vanguard Award gives NWS
an opportunity to find and highlight a rising star unknown in the water media world.
NWS is extremely grateful to all the National and Regional watermedia Societies that have
generously posted the upcoming NWS International Entry Form and New Vanguard Award
on their websites. Deadline to enter the NWS International Exhibition is July 31. We very
much look forward to your inclusion!

hou Tianya, CAA, NWS, has invited the

National Watercolor Society (NWS) to
collaborate in hosting a small image exchange
exhibition. The small image exhibit will be
held in conjunction with the 2015 Shenzhen
International Biennial Exhibition, exhibited in
the Shenzhen Art Museum from December
7, 2015, to January 10, 2016, and curated by
Zhou Tianya.

In 2016, following the exhibition in Shenzhen,

the small paintings from both countries will
travel to San Pedro, CA, where they will be
shown in the NWS Gallery from July 30, 2016,
to August 28, 2016.
Separate opening receptions are proposed
for both the Shenzhen International Biennial
and the Small Image Exhibitions. The small
images submitted by NWS artists were juried
by Zhou Tianya, and Linda Doll will serve
as juror for the Chinese artists paintings.
Zhou Tianya is a well-known artist, teacher,
author, and editor, who also has served
for the past seven (7) years as Chair of
the Art Department at Jingshu Academy
of Technology in Hubei, China. Linda Doll,
immediate Past President, and Director of
NWS, is an internationally-known artist,
teacher, juror, and workshop instructor.

Small works for this joint collaboration consist

of paintings no larger than 15 in the longest
dimension. They will be sent unframed to
NWS and will then be shipped to China by
NWS. Catalogs of the small image exhibition
will be printed through the generosity of
China, and each accepted artist will receive
this wonderful catalog.
More than 400 entries were submitted, and
Zhou Tianya has chosen 100 paintings from
those entries.

2015 NWS Annual Members Exhibition

This spring brought a first to the NWS Annual

Members Exhibition. We were able to engage our
juror Carol Carter for two workshops, the first of
which filled within a few days
of its posting and the second
within a week. Carol was so
gracious to make the time for
the hard work of back-to-back
workshops. Carol already
has signups for the next time
she comes out to the west
coast to teach again. We look
forward to giving our artists as many wonderful
workshop opportunities as possible.
On that note, we are observing that the workshops
are being populated with artists from around the
world; the information highway is a broad one
and the artists workshop schedules as well as our
website serve to fill the workshops quickly. We
have waiting lists, but we like to keep them short
as it is very complicated to manage. Our classroom
holds the sweet attendance of only 15 artists and
fills very quickly. Please be assured we work with
all, and the students are registered in the order
they sign up. Enroll online: its instantaneous and
all is easily taken care of.
One of the precepts of our Members Exhibition is
that the juror may not be a member of NWS. We
are thankful to our growing membership for their
suggestions and we love all the discoveries that
are made and the new members joining. Carol was

a very thoughtful juror, choosing what she saw as

work that was innovative and expressed the level
of accomplishment of our membership. We only
have seven awards for the Members Exhibition all
in the honor of our past presidents so it was very
stressful decision making.
Some observations as to this 2015 exhibition in
particular: we experienced several declinations of
entries this year, due in large part to not reading
the eligibility requirements, framing including
some of the professionally framed pieces as
well as errors in shipping. Make sure that once
your work has been juried in it also meets all the
criteria so that it can be included in the exhibition.
And, please, please ensure that your work is
properly hinged when mounted; there has been
much slippage during transport. Be aware there is
a fee for repairs, and there is also the opportunity
to reframe with a loaner.
And lastly but surely not the least important
is all the wonderful volunteers who work behind
the scenes to make all this happen. I wish this
year to thank Son Do and Stephanie Goldman for
placing the show and Steve Abshear for the final
adjustments and hanging of the show. We are
looking for some artists who will join us for the
upcoming Members Exhibitions and a new Director
of the Members Exhibition. It is a great opportunity
to learn these skills and also to work with some of
the finest artists from around the world; and, oh
yes, its FUN!

Seeding the Future of Watermedia

SPRUCE HEAD (ME) Watercolor may be the

first medium rain mixed with earth, mindfully
applied. In the 21st century, where can such a
longstanding tradition be headed? A Midcoast
artist wants to help pave the way for watermedia
to move into the future, and the prestigious
National Watercolor Society is welcoming
the effort.
Katharine A. Cartwright of Spruce Head, Maine,
is a Signature Member of the NWS, which is
currently accepting submissions for its 95th
International Exhibition. One of the top
awards is the new $3,000 Vanguard Award,
conceived and funded by Cartwright.
The idea is to elevate watermedia in this
country. When you look at the trajectory for
watercolor in the art world, Ive found that China
is so far advanced, getting very cutting-edge,
she said a few days before the annual call to
artists opened.
Cartwrights own work has been shown in China,
selected by a seven-member international
jury (that was) exhibited in the Shenzhen
International Watercolor Biennial in 2013. While
some representational work comes out of her
studio, her recent Laws of Nature series consists
of conceptual abstract paintings based on
scientific principles.
The Vanguard is for innovative work,
non-objective work, from artists who have never
been juried in before, Cartwright said. We
want to attract artists, but also give them some
money artists everywhere need money so they
can paint.
The International Exhibition does indeed draw
entries from everywhere; submissions come
from thousands of artists all around the world,
Cartwright said. So establishing an award to
encourage innovation can have a ripple effect
and not just among painters.
This is my nudge to push the jurors to be a little
more open, too, she said.

This award gives the juror an opportunity to
select strictly from a pool of nonobjective artists
on the basis of one piece against another by
first-time artists this eliminates the need for
those artists to compete against certain artists
who win awards over and over again, because it
has to be a first-time acceptance.
Goldman added that he is pleased that
Cartwright validated the NWS cutting-edge
watermedia reputation by selecting it to be
the venue for this award. He said he thinks
Cartwright is not only a very great artist,
but one of the most thoughtful, big-hearted,
generous people I have ever known. He views
the Vanguard as an opportunity for artists to gain
first-time recognition that can sometimes be
difficult in such a competitive field, where their
work is up against well done representational
pieces. Cartwrights body of works contains
examples of both.
Cartwright teaches as well as paints, and the
concept for the Vanguard Award developed
because she wanted her students to do
innovative work.
I decided I should put my money where my
mouth is, she said.
Cartwright is looking forward to the awarding
of the inaugural Vanguard Award at the
International Exhibition. Her wish is that it will
encourage other awards to be created for the
NWS other exhibitions and that it will catch
on for other Societies, as well.

Chairman, Judi Betts, NWS, AWS internationally
acclaimed for her transparent watercolor
paintings, has won more than 100 awards in
major competitions, her work appears on TV, CD
labels and in over 35 books. Judi is the author of
the award winning books WATERCOLOR Lets
Think About It! (5th printing) and PAINTING A
QUEST toward XTRAORD!NARY (5 awards). She
has participated in many Invitational exhibitions
including 1st, 2nd and 3rd Invitational Exhibitions
of Contemporary International Water-Media
Masters, sponsored by the 50th Anniversary
Exhibition in 2011. Judis paintings are also in the
Permanent Collections of the states of Arkansas
and Louisiana, the New Orleans Museum of
Art at the Springfield (MO) Art Museum, and
she has received the Louisiana Governors
Award for Professional Artist. The Transparent
Watercolor Society of America awarded her their

Master of Watercolor designation. Judi was

selected for a special award for Contributions
to the medium of Watercolor by Watercolor
USA Honor Society and in 2012 received their
Lifetime Achievement Award, their highest honor.
She also is a contributor to many prominent art
magazines. The ARTISTS MAGAZINE selected
Judi to be a juror for their 2002 International Art
Competition which drew over 15,000 entries. She
judged the Experimental Art Category. Over her
career, she has been juror/judge for more than 150
national/international and regional competitions.
In 2009, she served on the Awards Jury for the
American Watercolor Societys 142nd International
Competition. More than 425 workshops have
been presented by Judi; and she has given
invitational sessions for watercolor societies in
Norway, Puerto Rico, Sweden and Canada. Read

hands-on painting is her passion and the life
she enjoys.
Workshop participants will learn to paint a
cut crystal bowl in watercolor using a stepby-step process. Materials and information
provided before the session will enable you
time to prepare your drawings before the
workshop and use class time to work on
painting techniques. Learn how to create
a luminous underpainting. Soon shares
how to approach painting crystal using
glazing, washing, the concept of color theory
relationships, as well as light and dark values

to achieve vibrant and sparkly crystal. In

addition, you will be encouraged to bring
your own current pieces to paint along with
your reference material. End each day with
discussion and critique with Soon, a kind
and giving instructor. Take advantage of this
special workshop created for NWS.

NWS Demonstration: Supplies For Art Arent Always Art Supplies

A DEMONSTRATION with GEOFFREY McCORMACK NWS, AWS

Last week we had the opportunity to watch Geoffrey

McCormack www.mcsurf.com demonstrate his
techniques for achieving richly saturated backgrounds.
Although he uses traditional artists paints and papers,
many of the supplies Geoff uses are items more
commonly found in grocery or hardware stores.
Geoffs recent work include everyday objects like
smooth stones and cardboard boxes. He paints
these objects with startling realistic textures, colors,
perspective, lighting and shadows. His compositions
combine objects to form an intriguing interplay of
shapes and contrasting values, often with objects
appearing to float on multiple planes.
After planning his composition, Geoff masks off the
areas he wants to preserve white paper where hell
paint details later. Then he floods the paper with liquid
color to achieve even, saturated backgrounds.
To get his colors to the right consistency, Geoff stirs
and shakes watercolors or liquid acrylics with water (he
selects staining rather than granulating pigments) in
resealable plastic food storage containers.

To build saturated layers of color, he uses kitchen

sponges. Hes learned to keep his sponges moving
with just the right touch to cover the paper evenly.
Geoff has found that using sponges with pigments
suspended in water allows him to apply darker, more
even color in a fraction of applications and time that
would be required with a brush.
To mask areas where hell later paint boxes or rocks,
Geoff uses a variety of films and tapes that were
developed for auto-body painting. These tapes and
films cling well to textured surfaces, peel off without
damaging paper or leaving a residue, and come in a
variety of widths to mask anything from thin lines to
large fields.
Geoff has experimented with many materials and
techniques to find the right combination of unusual
tools and traditional art supplies that will help him
achieve the visual effects he wants to see in his
work. His inspiring paintings show us what artists
can achieve when they take the time to explore and
develop techniques and use their creativity and
resourcefulness in pursuit of a unique visual style.

Francesca Brayton received the Glenwood Spring Award for San Carlos
Pelicano in the Western Colorado Watercolor Society National Show, Grand
Junction, CO during March 2015.
Julia Chu had 10 watercolor paintings in World Wide Art Book, International
Contemporary Masters, Volume 9.
Ming Franz, NMWS, NWA, won the Grand Prize in the International Artist
Magazine Challenge NO. #86, Abstract / Experimental Art. painting for Rushing
Water April/May 2015. Her four-page article was in the April 2015
issue of American Art Collector magazine.
Rolland Golden, NWS, a member since it was the California Watercolor Society was
honored in Baton Rouge on May 7th, as a Louisiana Legend as a visual artist by
Louisiana Public Broadcasting.
John Hewitt, TWSA, has been awarded the Kenneth M Shuck $3000 Memorial
Award of the 2105 Watercolor USA Exhibition in Springfield, MI at the Springfield
Museum of Art. He was also the artist in residence for the month of February, 2015,
at the Yaquina River Art Museum in OR.
Mike Kowalski, NWS, was awarded the Silver Medal of Honor at the 148th
International Watercolor Exhibition.of the American Watercolor Society for his
painting Read all about it.
Mike Mazer was elected as a Fellow Magna Cum Laude in the American Artists
Professional League, NYC.
Oren Cooper received the Lily Fund Award at the 45th annual Watercolor West
International Exhibition for A day at the beach.
Kris Parins, NWS, FWS, received the Weber/Mission Gold Award in the 46th
Watercolor West International Juried Exhibition, for Nine Bicycles. This and another
are featured in Splash 16 Exploring Textures, published in June of 2015.
Kris Preslan, NWS,TWSA, WW, WAS-H, has her paintings in Splash 17: Inspiring
Subjects. She will be in North Light books showcasing the best in contemporary
watercolor paintings.
Robin Purcell, NWS, AWS, MCWA, LPAPA, is featured in an article A Head for the
Hills, June 2015 issue of Watercolor Artist. She had a two-person exhibit featuring
After the Fire Series plein air watercolors, February 28 April 6, 2015.

Cheng-Khee Chee, AWS DF, NWS, TWSA, WHS, has a retrospective exhibition A
Natural Flow: The Way of Cheng-Khee Chee, Paintings 1974-2015 through The
University of Minnesota, Duluth Tweed Museum of Art held May 12 September 30,
2015. His article A Glimpse of the Asian Aesthetic, will be published in the Ask
the Experts Column in the March Artists Magazine.
Devorah Friedman was awarded the National Watercolor Society Reciprocal
Award in Watercolor Wests 46th International Juried Exhibition. She also received
Signature Member at the 2014 Pennsylvania Watercolor Societys 35th Exhibition.
Jeanne Dobie was selected as the Awards Juror for the Philadelphia Water Color
Society International Exhibition, Reading, PA., September 5 October 25, 2015.
John Wilkison, NWS, AWS, received his Signature Membership in AWS with his
acceptance into their 148th Annual International Exhibition.
Roland Lee, NWS, won Best of Show at the Dixie Watercolor Societys fall
exhibition. He also received Peoples Choice Award and four Purchase Awards
at the Zion National Park Plein Air Invitational, UT, November 2014. In addition he
was recently awarded the 2014 Governors Mansion Medal by the Governor, Gary
Herbert, for contributions to the visual arts in UT.
Robert Lee Mejer (Bob) had his article in Artists Magazine May issue: Happy
Accidents, Achieve intriguing Textural Effects by Letting Watercolor have Its
Own Way on a Gel-Covered Surface.
Judy Nunno has an article Not Your Grandmas Florals featured in Watercolor
Artist, April 2015.
Kim Minichiello achieved Signature Membership in the Georgia Watercolor Society
this year with Mayan Gate.
Frank Spino, NWS,TWSA, WHS-USA, PWS, PWCS, FWS, will exhibit Orange
Crush at the International Watercolour Society Invitational Exhibition in Fabriano,
Italy. His Zhujiajiao, China Water City was awarded Second Place in the Brevard
Watercolor Society SPLASH exhibition. Radishes won the Peoples Choice.
Susan Webb Tregay, NWS, TWSA, WHS, will have a painting on the cover of
Hendersonville Magazine.
Jeanne Dobie was the Juror of Selection for the Watercolor Society of Alabama
National Exhibition, Fairhope, AL, March 8 - 27th, 2015.

Philomena Sculco received M.Graham & Company, and Fred Blackburn

Memorial Patron Fine Art Award #2 at Watercolor Society of Alabama, 74th
National Exhibition, for Thirsty Anemones in Fairhope, AL.

Oren Coopers painting A Day At The Beach received the Lily Fund Award at
the 45th annual Watercolor West International Exhibition, City of Brea Art Gallery,
October 12 - December 15.

Steve Rogers AWS, NWS, TWSA, was the sole Juror of Selection and sole Awards
Judge for the 66th National Exhibition of the Texas Watercolor Society, April-May,
2015 in San Antonio, TX.

Judy Nunno won the Jack Richeson Award at the Southern Watercolor Society
38th Annual Exhibition for Labor of Love and served as juror for the Miami
Watercolor Society 42nd Annual Spring Exhibition.

Angela Barbalace, won the Elizabeth Ruggles Memorial Award for the 45th
Garden State Watercolor Society annual exhibition.

Jeanne Hylands Bell Pepper & Blue Jar won the Mabel Culpepper Award at
the 2015 New Mexico Watercolor Society Spring Exhibition. Albuquerque, NM. Her
Poinsettia Blast painting was a Finalist in the Richeson75ONLINE; Still Life &
Floral 2015.

Chris Beck won the First Place award in Other Media in the Richeson75 Small
Works exhibition at the Richeson School of Art and Gallery in Kaukauna, WI for
Arabesque. February 23 April 4, 2015.
