SUMMER 2015
I would like to acknowledge and thank Debbie and Steve Abshear for
keeping the NWS San Pedro gallery as up-to-date as any museum venue
I have ever seen. This spring Debbie and Steve organized a volunteer clean-up/rebuilding
party that was so much fun, it really should have been called an all day Pizza Party rather
than the super-productive cleanup day it actually was. However, volunteerism can only do
so much. The general repair and maintenance of the gallery with its valuable permanent
collection is an ongoing concern and does not come without a cost. During the cleanup,
we discovered our roof is in dire need of repairs. Your NWS Donation of any size (directed
exclusively to the Building Fund) would be a welcome gift.
The now sparkling NWS Gallery currently hosts our Members Exhibition juried by
Carol Carter and is up until July 31. Carol did a superb job of selecting a wide variety of
beautiful watercolors which were skillfully arranged by Son Do and professionally hung
by Steve Abshear. In addition to selecting this wonderful exhibition, Carol Carter then
completely filled two back-to-back workshops.
On June 4, during an event called 1st Thursday, San Pedros Chamber of Commerce
escorted a group of 40 people to our gallery, and some commented that they couldnt
believe they were looking at watercolors! The NWS gallery is now very much a part of
San Pedros vibrant art scene. This is vital as the gallery is maintained by volunteers.
Signature member Katharine Cartwright, NWS has created a brand new $3000 Award
exclusively for NWS and non-objective artists. The brilliance of Katharines conception,
which she has called The Vanguard Award, is that it is only available to a first-time accepted
entrant working in the area of non-objective water media. The Vanguard Award gives NWS
an opportunity to find and highlight a rising star unknown in the water media world.
NWS is extremely grateful to all the National and Regional watermedia Societies that have
generously posted the upcoming NWS International Entry Form and New Vanguard Award
on their websites. Deadline to enter the NWS International Exhibition is July 31. We very
much look forward to your inclusion!

You finish a great piece, you frame it and hang it over the couch. You enter a juried
competition, it gets accepted and you are elated, packing and shipping, right?
WAIT, will your piece of art, framed so elegantly look good with other awesome
pieces in a juried exhibition?
ONLY IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO KISS! (keep it simple stupid.)
K. Kream, white, or off-white; two-, four-, or eight-ply museum quality, acid
free matt
I. Information on Back
S. Safe - Plexiglass
S. Simple - Clear, Natural, Blonde, Off White or Dark Wood/Metal frame,
maximum 1 - 1-1/2width.
Here are some examples of what happens in a juried exhibition and why your
painting may not have won or even been considered for an award.
Damaged Frame, Too Many Mats, Colored Mats, Fancy Filets, Filagree Frames, No
Mat, Fancy Gold or Silver Frames, Cheap Frame, Does Not Play Well With Others
Frame, I Am All That Frame, Hey Look At Me Frame, Grandmas Cabin Frame,
Grandpas Barn Frame, Diploma Frame, Gawdy Galerie Frame, etc, etc.
You get the picture. In a mixed juried competition, its very important to hang
well with the art next to you. Thinking about hanging well with your neighbor
goes a long way in not only getting a great place in an exhibition but also being
considered for and receiving an award.
Good luck to all when entering your next
juried competion.
