Task 1: Essay on information literacy

Write a short essay (750-1000 words) on one of the topics from the list in the assignment
guide.
MARKING CRITERIA:

Provide a clear definition of information literacy

Explain the characteristics of an information literate person
Discuss why information literacy is important for 21st century society.

13 / 20
MARKING COMMENTS:

Not ll tertiary libraries use LC. Check Auckland University for starters. It's not terribly
relevant either what classification system they use, so long as they teach students
how to use it, You have used two direct quotations defining information literacy,
where it would have been better to summarise both of these in your own words, and
reference them both in text. In general you have not put enough in your own words,
and have linked together a series of quotes, You obviously have a good
understanding of the definition of information literacy, and have applied this to a
tertiary setting well too.
MARKING CRITERIA:

Show evidence that you recognise the role of the library and library staff in increasing
information literacy.
Discuss suitable strategies for achieving information literacy in a library setting.

10 / 15
MARKING COMMENTS:

You have applied your learning well into a tertiary library environment with your focus on
user education through the references you have used.
APA Referencing
MARKING CRITERIA:

Intext referencing using correct APA style is supplied.

A reference list using correct APA style is supplied

5/5
MARKING COMMENTS:

Good referencing in text and in your reference list. Nice work.

Section Total:28 / 40
Task 2: Use of learning theories to enhance information literacy
Choose one type of library (or information service) and write a short essay (750-1000
words) about the use of learning theory in that type of library.
MARKING CRITERIA:

Show evidence that you understand learning theory as a concept. and why it is
important.

16 / 20
MARKING COMMENTS:

You started out giving s library example of your first theory, and then didn't do it for
the rest. Continuing this would have been consistent. You do look to have a good
grasp of learning theory and the relevance of this in a library context.
MARKING CRITERIA:

Show evidence that you recognise the role of leaning theory in your chosen information
service.

11 / 15
MARKING COMMENTS:

You have applied your learning quite well in a general library context, and to a lesser
degree, in a high school library context. You can be quite specific in providing detailed

examples of how learning theory can be applied with real life scenarios. You haven't lost
focus throughout this that you are looking at libraries, and this is important.
APA Referencing
MARKING CRITERIA:

Intext referencing using correct APA style is supplied.

A reference list using correct APA style is supplied

4/5
MARKING COMMENTS:

Your in text referencing here is a bit off - Just last name and then date in brackets, or
include page number if you are directly quoting. Your reference list is good though,
Remember the DOI for database articles, not the long link.

Section Total:31 / 40
Task 3: Reflection
Write a brief reflection (about 300 words) on your experience of searching for information
and writing the essays.
MARKING CRITERIA:

Show a willingness to reflect on your learning process.

Discuss why some resources were more useful than others.
Show an awareness of your own information literacy skills and how these may have
impacted on your learning experience.

15 / 20
MARKING COMMENTS:

Good reflection and you have documented your progress as you see it very clearly.
You are aware of where things are tricky and you need to focus, and this is good.
This really does make you aware of where your own information literacy is,.

Section Total:15 / 20
Well researched and your writing is quite clear. At times you have linked a series of
references and quotes together to the point that it is hard to find "you" in the writing,
and it becomes more of a summary of what other people think, rather than what you
think with references used to validate this. It also leads to repetition.Don't be afraid
to have an opinion that you can back up with your research. Very good work on the
whole.
