Roger began work on the concept and songs of The Pros and Cons of HitchHiking in
the late 1970's and it was only after Pink Floyd disbanded that he refined the lyrics and
music. Pros and Cons became his first "Solo" album without the other Pink Floyd
members as backup studio musicians as some say was the case with the albums,
"The Wall" and "The Final Cut."
His new band, which he called "The Bleeding Hearts Band," was composed of various
great studio musicians he had befriended over the years. However for the album, and
this first iteration of the band, Roger called upon non other than Eric Clapton for it's
lead guitarist and main instrumentalist.
The Pros and Cons of HitchHiking was released in 1984 with concerts beginning two
tours in Sweden shortly there-after. There were trivial differences in the lyrics reported
between the US Pros and Cons album release and the British release, as well as extra
lyrics sung during the Pros and Cons tour.
The lyrics
4.30 AM (Apparently They Were Travelling Abroad)
Hey...girl
Take out the dagger
And let's have a stab at the sexual revolution
Hey girl
Let freedom for all be our rallying call
Tomorrow lets make...our new resolution
Yeah, but tonight lie still
While I plunder your sweet grave
And remember
Only the poor can be saved
Hey girl
As I've always said I prefer your lips red
Not what the good Lord made
But what he intended
Hey girl
Don't point the finger at me
I am only a rat in a maze like you
And only the dead go free
So...please hold my hand
As we blunder through the maze
And remember
Nothing can grow without rain
(Thunder)
Don't point
Don't point your finger at me
I awoke in a fever
The bedclothes were all soaked in sweat
She said "You've been having a nightmare
And it's not over yet"
Then she picked up the doggy in the window
(The one with the waggly tail)
And she put him to bed between two bits of bread
An angel on a Harley
Pulls across to greet a fellow rolling stone
Puts his bike up on it's stand
Leans back and then extends
A scarred and greasy hand...he said
How ya doin bro?...where ya been?...where ya goin'?
