Tea irrigation in a mountainous terrain

Challenge :
Mix of buried or fixed mains and portable sub-mains and laterals
Movable system required for 160Ha plantation
200mm dia. main pipeline subject to constant water hammer due to
changes in elevation
Considerable axial forces on the pipes due to sloping terrain

Solution :
Water drawn from river at 400gal/min at 95metre head and carried
through a network of mains, sub-main and lateral lines to the
sprinkler heads which irrigate the crop
Dual feeder mains installed one on top of another using special
clamps
Jointing of main lines by butt welding
Portable irrigation sub-mains and laterals (160mm & 110mm) fitted
with quick release couplings.
Overall length of the system 5.4km
All pipes and fittings in the project manufactured from PE

consisting of AC pipes, PVC pipes
and Steel pipes over 30 years old
Connection of new PE pipeline to
other types of existing pipes

Solution :
Upgraded 3.2km of pipeline to PE
ranging from 160mm to 315mm
diameter
Jointing of main lines by butt
welding and wide range flanges to
connect to other existing pipes

Uneven terrain and high water table
causing frequent soil movements and
considerable axial forces on the

630mm main PE pipeline
Replace man-made canals with 500mm
PE pipeline
Jointing of main line by butt welding

Overall length of the system 4.5km
