The bearing is mounted and dismounted using pres surised oil. A hydraulic nut facilitates the drive-up. In the hydraulic nut, the oil pressure acts against the piston providing the axial drive-up force.

The flanged coupling in figure 2 is typical. The pressure between the tapered co ntacting surfaces is in the region of 250MPa (36250 psi). Because of the high ed ge stresses it is necessary to supply oil through a special duct close to the si de face of the flange to prevent intermetallic contact during the drive-up. The axial drive-up force is hydraulically generated.

The performance of OK couplings (figure 3) in rolling mill couplings and loom cr ankshafts, for instance, where very heavy fluctuating loads occur, has clearly d emonstrated the high power transmitting capacity and reliability of components, from small to very large, mounted by using the oil injection method. The superio rity of the pressure joint over those using keys and keyways is particularly obv ious where reversible operations are encountered. Stoppages and costly repairs h ave in many instances been eliminated through replacing components which are nor mally keyed together by components mounted with interference using the oil injec tion method, for instance in rolling mill equipment (figure 4), overhead cranes, and slewing gears (figure 5).

When using the oil injection method, components are assembled in the conventiona l way, e.g. by driving a shaft into a hub by means of axial pressure. However, t he considerable effort normally required is greatly reduced by forcing oil under pressure between the mating surfaces of the components so that they are separat ed by a thin film of oil. The introduction of lubricant also minimises the risk of damage to the surfaces.To ensure a supply of oil during the whole period of a ssembly, the mating surfaces are slightly tapered. lnterference is obtained by a xial displacement of the tapered components in relation to each other, using a m ounting tool. When the applied oil pressure is reduced after mounting is complet e, oil is forced back through the supply duct by surface pressure so that direct contact is made between the mating surfaces and full power-transmitting capacit y obtained.

When components have to be dismounted oil is again injected and, as the oil film builds up, the tapered surfaces separate automatically. Provided that care and cleanliness are observed, components may be mounted and dismounted many times us ing the oil injection method, a repeated occurrence for instance with rolling mi ll couplings when changing rolls.Components with cylindrical surfaces may be dis mounted by the oil injection method. The method is also used to adjust the align
ment or position of machine components which have been shrunk on to a cylindrica
l shaft.

Videos showing some ways of using oil power:
Oil power
OK coupling
Mounting and dismounting bea rings
Supergrip bolt

Some example figures:
<oimimg link="Sleeve on tapered shaft" img="b00001.gif" text="" /oimimg>
<oimimg link="Distribution of pressurised oil" img="b00002.gif" text="" /oimimg>
<oimimg link="Hydraulic nut" img="b00003.gif" text="" /oimimg>
<oimimg link="Mounting with hydraulic nut" img="b00004.gif" text="" /oimimg>
<oimimg link="Dismounting with hydraulic nut" img="b00005.gif" text="" /oimimg>< br />

See also section Practical experience and applications

CHECK TYPE OF LINK WITH DAG
