Self-Assessment Assignment
Dear Mary,
This is one of your quizzes from the beginning of the year, I chose this one because although it
has many things to improve, it also has some good points that you have let go of during the craziness of
the year.
Ill start with the cornerstones you achieved well. The most obvious benefit of this evaluation
was the practicality. Since it was all multiple choice, it only took you about 30 minutes to grade all of
them! Isnt that awesome!! You were able to grade it that night and return it the next day! The students
benefitted from this because it was still fresh in their minds! The security of the test was also very good.
When you gave the test back to the students you reviewed the answers, answered their questions, and
let them take short notes about the ones they got wrong. Then you collected the evaluation again. It will
be easy to adjust and move questions next year and use a lot of the basic ideas safely.
The cornerstones that you could have done better on are transparency and validity. The test is
not very transparent because it doesnt say how much it is worth in total (although I think you said it
verbally in class). It might have a low validity because multiple choice questions might not really reach
the objectives that you should have been aiming at and tested their knowledge in an appropriate way.
On the test Ive highlighted 4 colors here is an explanation of each one:
Yellow- Here I highlighted words or aspects that are confusing or missing. I highlight the word
Assessment because the students are not accustomed to hear that word and they became concerned
that it was some new type of thing. I wrote and highlighted the word POINTS because you didnt
include how much the evaluation was worth. I highlighted Gastritis because it was something you only
really discussed with one of the 2 classes during their lesson so the second class might have been
confused
Green- Here I highlighted questions in which you used a negative in the question. From the
reading we learned that this can be confusing for the students and can reduce the quality of the
evaluation. You should avoid using this.
Purple- Here I highlighted the answers that were not congruent or didnt follow the pattern of
the other answers. According to the readings this can influence the students responses and take away
from the validity of the evaluation.
Blue- Here I highlighted things that you did that I thought were effective. I highlighted the titles
of each section because they helped to organize and direct the students mind in the area they should
be focusing. I also highlighted questions 9 and 10 because they show that even though the evaluation is
multiple choice, you can test a variety of levels of thinking skills from identification to analysis.
Overall the evaluation is successful. However the biggest parts you can fix are to remove the
negatives from the question to avoid confusion and reduced validity, tell how many points it is worth to
increase transparency, and change the title from Assessment to quiz so the students feel more
comfortable. A few other minor adjustments could help- for example, the wording of Gastritis and
incongruent answer choices. One thing that you should take from this test and apply in your others is
the practicality and easiness to grade which results in faster feedback for the students.
With love, Mary
